Todd, I put that same unit in at my house. The main thing is Uncle Sam and DS Kate Brown the State of Oregon paid for it and the install. It's considered a EV Charging station. So it didn't cost me a dime. Also going to put a 30amp/220 plug set in the garage. And let them pay for it as a second EV Charging station. Is it ok to use a 50 amp 240, NEMA 14-50 plug (like an EV has/uses at home) to plug your 50 amp RV into? As I understand, those 14-50's always have 2 hots, 1 neutral, and 1 ground. The RV will only pull off one 120V's?

thumbs up simply for the Ghostbusters reference! knew right where you were going with that! Very good advice about making sure the line in is 120 and not 240. a few years back I ran power for an rv for some people i knew. and like you said, what were used to seeing is 30 amps 240 volts. and thats how I hooked it up, like a rook! thank jeebus they had everything plugged into surge protectors and diddnt loose anything! reconfigured the ckt and definitely learned the lesson!

I'm not an electrician but wouldn't you test the voltages from the ground plug first? If you don’t get anything in one leg, then test that leg to the other, to see if you had 120 or 240?

Just had a 50A service installed at my house, and it works, kind of. In the main house electrical panel is a GFI 50A breaker, okay right? The RV runs everything but I hear the converter fan running often which is not normal. The GFI in the house panel also trips often and randomly. Never had either issue on generator, 120V 20A shore power, or at 50A service in a camp ground. Help please.

I found your channel 2 weeks ago. I found it while searching to find the answer to this question: installing a 1200w inverter off my RV battery bank for a cpap machine while Boondocking. “They” say to put an in-line fuse on the positive leg between the battery and the inverter using minimum 6 gauge wire. Where can I go to find out what size fuse is appropriate?

@larryhansen433411 ай бұрын
A $200 pedestal? Why. Mount a $20 RV plug with a $10 weather box and your're done. Even with a 50 amp rig you'll never need more than your 30 amp. Who runs both ac units at home
@jasonengberg158310 ай бұрын
Hi Larry! So I agree for a basic setup. However, you should NEVER plug in with the breaker on. If you have to walk to your breaker every time you wish to plug or unplug, it might not be convenient. Hence a box is optimal. To your second point, my furnace pulls almost 30, can’t run my airfryer or my latte machine let alone all three unless I’m at 50. Again it’s a convenience thing, but I hope you appreciate the real world application. Lastly I found a box on amazon for 90 bucks so prices have come down. Cheers!

So, this begs the question. As I am relatively new to RV'ing how does a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter work without frying your RV electrical?
@NationalRVTrainingAcademy3 жыл бұрын
Electricity works on demand. Think of a 100 watt lightbulb plugged into the wall outlet. The wall outlet is capable of providing 1800 watts, yet the lightbulb only demands 100 watts.
@chrisgrob88123 жыл бұрын
What ??? A 50amp to 30amp converts itself by only using one phase of the 50amp service. This making the 50amp to 30amp only a 120VAC service. Must be a bot response from the Academy
@NationalRVTrainingAcademy3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisgrob8812 the question was how does a 50a to 30a adaptor work without frying the RV electrical. Your RV will not “fry” by simply adapting a 50A to a 30A plug. You can, however, demand more amperage than the 30A can handle with a 50A RV, but still, you won’t fry the electrical system. You may trip the 30A breaker and put undue strain on your appliances.
@chrisgrob88123 жыл бұрын
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy I know By using a 30amp to 50 amp adapter you will not fry your 30amp unit. But by 25yrs of Being a RV tech I do know of customer using those adapter for years and melting there adapter together. Adapter are to be used temporarily. Weekend use.

So, just to verify… both the 20 amp and 30 amp are 120 volts and the 50 amp is 240 volts?
@NationalRVTrainingAcademy3 жыл бұрын
So in the RV pedestal the 30 amp and 20 amp breakers have 1 hot leg of 120v. The 50 amp breaker has 2 hot legs at 50 amp snd they are split phase which would be 240 volts between the two legs.

A properly trained and licensed electrician should know to wire a 30 amp outlet at 120V for an RV. That being said, the idiot I hired didn’t know that and he not only didn’t get paid, but paid me for the cost of all repairs to my RV. I’ve never seen a check come in the mail that fast.

Guess I’m after free info, sorry. I have 50 amp 30 amp service as you showed in our video professionally installed several years ago. The 50 amp side now will not work with two different surge protectors, had the same electric company check it out, was told there is no problems with the 50 amp service. But when I plug the surge protector in they will not even power up. No problems with them at rv parks. Am now using the 30 amp service side with surge protector. No problems. Before I spend another $125.00 service fee what should I ask or tell the new electric company? Thank you Gary

Bet your surge protector is not pleased with the ground on your service. It wants a bonded ground between the neutral and the ground.
