That’s an interesting plumeria with that white trunk. What variety is that? Do you know how to graph a plumeria to make it Variegated? I’ve found that putting wood chips on the bottom third of the pot and the rest a 50/50 mix of black cow manure and perlite makes for immediate growth of any clippings. I’ve even been able to grow clippings as small as 4 inches! Today I’m looking for some tips growing plumeria from seed. Happy growing!

Plumerias or Frangipanis as we call it in Australia is simply the easiest plant to propogate. You can plant it in the cheapest potting mix or straight into the garden and it will grow. Guarantee, It's really that simple!!! All these products is not necessary.

Thank you for sharing this update video! ...A couple of questions. :) I planted my plumerias in December. It's just now getting warm again in Southern California. I haven't seen any blooms or leaf growth yet. Should I check for anything specific or is that normal? When I first planted them, one had a few blooms and as the temperature decreased over winter, the blooms fell off. Lastly, I see a little bit of rot on the cutting. It's about dime size in radius. Any suggestions for how to remedy that? The cutting still feels firm, not soggy.

Thank you Etta J! Plumeria are not frost tolerant-- So if there is any risk of below freezing temperatures, you must bring your plant indoors. Here in Los Angeles, the temperatures rarely dip during our lowest winter cold nights below 0; therefore, many homes successfully grow the plant into trees in their landscape. I choose to save most of my land for fruit trees and vegetables that can provide my family with excellent nutrition that beats any store bought food! I hope this helps! :) Charles

Charles, 2 questions and a comment. 1) can you use IV Organics spray to protect A Plumeria leaves in conjunction with a product like Spray and Grow on leaves? 2) will IV Organics keep spiders, spider mites etc away from Plumeria's? There's a huge debate in the Plumeria community on high your NPK numbers should be. Is there any chance of you making a video explaining in both scientific and laymen's terms what it means to have too high or too low NPK numbers?
@IVOrganic

Great questions Terry Darkis! And I will try to publish a plumeria lesson again before spring. Yes, you can use IVO Spray (Ready-To-Use Spray, or make your own spray from the can) to protect the leaves. And the oils in the product (3-in-1 product line) will repel spiders and spider mites from your leaves. Even the base parts of the product, such as limestone and mica (clay), help to minimize any pest damage. Keep me posted on your successes! Charles :-)

Yea the fertilising section basicaly just explains general fertilisers and their function with an emphasis on organics. As far as plumerias are concerned I'm interested in the specifics of what they need. Mine do just fine with very poor soil, no fert at all, bone dry in the dry season wet as muck in the rainy season, sandy soil. They flower and do their thing beutifully. However I have one I battle with , it's Plumeria pudica. It's meant to have fantasticaly dark dark almost black shiny green leaves which show off the intense bright white flowers so well. Mine doesn't, the leaves stay a bright mid green which infuriates me. Flowers very well. Tried almost everything. Only thing I haven't tried is lime which I'm about to try. It doesn't seem to like fertiliser much, organic fertilisers included, high bloom boosters make it go into a sulk. Any knowledge about it's specific needs, dying to hear.

I got tired of buying real plants for my goldfish, who would immediately eat them as soon as I put them in the tank. So I started adding weeds from my yard, holding my breath each time I added a new plant. One of the plants I added was purslane. They LOVE IT. Particularly the flowers and seeds. No fish have died since I started doing this about 1 year ago.

Hi there, so appreciate your expertise. My gardener made 6 cuttings of my original plumeria tree (because the root was diseased) but didn’t dry them out for the week and directly put it into potting soil. This was 1 month ago and now I am noticing that the base of each cutting is getting soft and shriveled…I think it has root rot on all of the cuttings! I am so sad by this…the original tree was 20 years old. I would like to recut all of the root rot out, dry them out and replant them with all of your suggestions and steps…is this ok to do? Also, although the base of the cuttings are soft, there are flower buds on all of the cuttings…will this be a problem? Thank you so much for your help!

Hi, I have my Plumeria for about a year. I have never cut it and it looks like the trunk is not evenly thick. In the place where the main trunk splits into 3 branches as usual - these branches much thinner but then start to thicken again. The trunk length is 9 inch while the 3 branches have 9, 13 and 14-inch length. Was I supposed to cut them at the place where the trunk split into branches? How big should the pot be if I want the plumeria to grow and blossom? It has never blossomed yet.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Yauheniya Taran, There are so many ways to answer your couple of questions. First, with regards to pruning, you are the artist that will be responsible for controlling the size, height, shape, structure, strength, etc of your plumeria (and other plants as well). Note, if you prune any parts, be sure to plant those stems to create more genetically identical clones of your plant. Generally, you should repot your plumeria every 3-5 years; even if you end up re-potting into the same pot. If the plumeria is outgrowing he container faster, gradually find a pot a couple inches wider/ deeper and repot in the later winter/ early spring. To push the most blooms over the longest season (spring & summer), you should feed your plants with an organic fertilize with a high middle (phosphorus) number, and lower first (nitrogen) number... something like 2-5-3. Keep me posted on your plumeria growing successes! Charles :-)

MargieInOz Hi from Australia. I have grown some frangipani from seed and some from cuttings. It gets warm here in summer but can drop below -2 in winter. I have put up a Polycarbonate green house and put the pots in but it still get very cold overnight in winter. Would the pots be better in a shade cloth enclosed area which has laser light roof. It gets late afternoon sun. I put 8 cuttings in a pot last September and one of them flowered deep pink, beautiful. Another I grew has one long stem, no branches, how can i make it grow branches. Any advice is welcome and loved the video, thanks.

@IVOrganic

Hello Odette381, Using coconut coir would be an equal substitute for peat moss, in my opinion. Both products are derived from plant sources that absorb water, retain minerals, feed the soil microorganisms, and break down slowly over time-- hence, equal substitute. :) Charles

It got real cold here last winter and they went dormant. About 1 month ago June/July they all finally sprouted leaves and 2 have buds & blooms. This took 7mo! I planted a cutting several years ago and somehow, the Purslane sprung up in the pot with the Plumeria. It dies back yearly and springs back when I put the plant back outside.

Hello Harriet Heywood, Funny that we both have purslane growing wild (naturally) in our Plumeria pots! Thank you for sharing! Charles :-)

In California I learned about Purslane from a Hispanic man who told me about a plant that they use in burritos called Verdolagas. It's the same thing as Purslane. I found it for sale at the supermarket produce section

Ok people I apreciate the mans knowledge but what me and my sister do is cut them, even long pieces, take off some leaves and put them in our rain barrel water or tap water. For a few days and after a few days check and look for roots. Then plant them in soil and water and that’s it. If you have poor draining soil mix 50/50 with a good organic soil from a garden center meant for ground planting avoid miracle grow type brands.

I was just gifted 8 one gallon, year old plants from cuttings. How often do you fertilize? I'm guessing mine need repotting but I'd love to get flowers before they have to come inside, probably 90 more days at least.

These grow like weeds in south Florida. It looks like you live in CA which is OK but not the best climate aka not tropical for these. CA is more of a Mediterranean climate. They will live but not thrive as I can see by your flower size, count and growth rate. Best to grow these in Hawaii and south FL
