Never use the soil from a plant that has experienced root rot. The rot is caused by a fungus that will remain in the soil, so you will transfer the fungus to your new plant or cutting. Use Cactus soil, plumeria is a succulent. Careful of vermiculite with plumerias, moss as well, don't use moss! They retain moisture. Cuttings can rot in straight perlite, so anything that moisture in it at all can be a major issue. I recommend the bag method with new soil, 2/3 perlite to 1/3 soil, the soil will have enough moisture to last until the cutting has rooted and can be transferred to a pot. 50/50 perlite to cactus soil. I live in Phoenix, AZ and we have Temps at 115°F right now and my cuttings are bagged and just get misted every once in a while. I water my rooted plumerias once a week, giving it light spritzes of water at noon just so the top roots don't turn to straw. I have 4-6 drain holes on the bottom and 4-6 drain/ air holes on the sides at the bottom. I also take a stake and put holes down straight to the bottom through the soil. The roots do NOT like to be really wet. If you live in a more humid or cooler environment in the summer you can water even less. And only water once or twice all winter when they are dormant.

With his academic background in horticulture, I'm really trusting this guy. He's SCHOOLED in the how and why of growing plants, so you can be sure he knows what he's talking about. I've watched this video twice now in preparation of getting some plumerias (4 to be exact) via Etsy from a vendor actually living in Hawaii. I'm located in coastal southern Louisiana (Lake Charles). With the luxury of living in a true sub-tropical climate it will mimic it's native climate, except that here in coastal Louisiana we do on occasion have a light frost with a light freeze (below 32 degrees to the high twenties). In that event, I will just scoot the plant inside to an adjacent room to the patio and back outside the next day to get sun. Convenient, right? Thanks for the good informative video, Charles. 🙂

Good Day Sir. I never knew that the PLUMERIA trees can be cut like this and plant them back. I have huge PLUMERIA trees in my home and at-least I can find 15 to 20 different varieties in Sri Lanka. We call these as Temple Flowers as we offer these flowers to temple more often. I have seen even Red mixed with Yellow flowers at my place. Next time when I visit my home country I am definitely going to plant PLUMERIA and rich my garden with these beauties. Your videos inspired me a lot to do organic gardening than using chemicals. This year I grew scotch, tomatoes, Hot Banana, Hot Chile, Various types of cucumbers and Water Mellon in my garden and I only used FISH fertiliser, fallen tree leaves and grass clippings. I also took care of improving the soil conditions by allowing other living beings to stay on my garden. This year, plants are so beautiful and fruitful than previous years. So organic gardening makes a big difference and your educational videos helped me a lot to expand my knowledge. Next year I am expanding my garden even bigger to try more of your invaluable tips. Only issue I found here in CANADA is, due to strict rules I cannot find any of the IV Organic products or NEEM Oil. So I am giving my best shot to buy IV Organic products. I am also planning to buy a cheap land in back home which has nice tropical whether to grow plants only by using the organics. Your ideas helped me to think that I am not apart from nature and study the mother nature's way of nurturing the plants. Finally, your work is amazing and that mesmerised me a lot to enjoy 3 months summer in Canada. I am for sure to move to my motherland and enjoy the beauty of her with all these cool tips. Have a wonderful day and I wish you all the very best...

Hi from down under. I've "accumulated" 2 different coloured cuttings and I'm so glad I found your blog. I was about to do everything you say "not to"! It's a very warm autumn here now and usually lasts until May so I think I may have a chance at growing them. If it works I may consider growing and selling to make a little cash? Your video is great. Don't worry what the others say. It is natural clear and hones and that's a very nice change. Your little girl has done a great job.

Im in Ventura ca, super foggy 6-8months/year and i grow, breed and sell plumerias and other tropical plants. Unfortunately 99%of the plumeria growing etc info online is specific to warm climates, mostly Florida etc and seriously has negetive impacts on most of my clients growing teqmiques and tells to do opposite of what needs to be done. always tripps me out how incorrect the advice is we've found online. :/ im constantly seeking out assistance with growing plumerias around the Ventura area or in a similar climate and its quite hard to find. Im super stoked i found your channel. All the quality info you pack into each video is amazing and super helpful.... wow, im so grateful! ❤ Your super knowledgeable and the info you give is priceless and super unique. No place online until now has given me such quality and correct info on how to grow plumerias in the so cal region .... until now. So thank you so so much. I couldnt be happier. Ive always been curious about the soil. Ive just learned from trial and error. I know they like a highly acidic diet and so i literally dilute pineapple juice and mix with my 10-10-10 every other month and have found its the easiest way to get my orchids to bloom quickly and my plumerias to grow quicker. Hahaahah. But now i have you to learn from and i literally just went outside and fertalized based on the info you shared in the video proceeding this one. Woohoooo Thank u thank u thank u! Not only are you giving us helpful info but your telling us the science behind everything you speak on. I am so stoked. tu so much

Thanks for the great video! Kudos to your daughter's camera work - she did a great job and I think it added charm to the video in seeing those pink flip flops in a few of the shots! I am definitely going to pick up some 3 in 1 tree guard. I was confused in watching one of the 3 in 1 videos that stated the product should not be used on the leaves of the plant and then seeing you use the diluted product to spray the leaves. I am assuming the 3 in 1 video should have stated not to use on the leaves full strength but to dilute for sun block. I would like to try this on my potted avocado trees which suffer from sunburn every year. The information on root rot and soil drainage was very useful. I have always added soil to the top of the pot rather than the bottom. It totally makes sense to add to the bottom. Also, I have always used wood chips on the bottom for improved drainage but will switch to rocks or broken clay pots in the future.

Thank you for sharing your video. How often do you water the Plumeria plants?
@terrymd3293
@terrymd3293 7 жыл бұрын
Just stumbled across your video and boy am I glad I did!! I'm fairly a newbie to the Plumeria world going on my 2nd full year. You've explained the importance of good drainage and water retention the best. I think in the spring when I repot, I think I'll divide up my pot with the bottom 1/3 being 2/3's potting soil + 1/3 perlite for some water retention. The top 2/3's would be 2/3's perlite +1/3 coir or potting soil blend for faster drainage to the bottom of the pot. It should also minimize root rotting. Any suggestions appreciated about this are appreciated.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Terry, I am glad you found me! :) Coir is the preferred, and better environmental sensible choice over peat moss (as used in this video). So I would recommend that you use potting soil with up to 30% more perlite in the top and bottom 2-3 inches to (1) improve drainage and (2) prevent stem and root rot. Another potting mix to consider would be 1/3 coir, 1/3 perlite and 1/3 vermiculite. Add an extra handful or two of perlite to the top and bottom 2-3 inches for the reason I just explained. Let me know what you decide to do and keep me posted! I too have a lot more examples of potting plants in the late winter and early spring.... this is not the time to be repotting your plants. Keep in touch! :) Charles

Hey Charles, great, very informative, videos. Hopefully u can give me some advice on how to save my lemon tree! My tree is about 10’+ high and over 11+ yrs old. When trimming my tree I always left a good sized canopy. (Had never even heard of a sun burnt tree till a 4-1 Ivory organic videos) I usually just used good common sense. This year though the canopy was cut down very short and the bark started peeling off in large strips. I didn’t notice this at first. What I did notice was my tree that had usually produced large amounts of lemons (this year was no different) what was different was they didn’t ripen as usual. They have been on my tree since the beginning of spring and most are still small and green. I’m not sure if it was pruned the wrong time of yr or pruned back to far. Maybe both. Any advice on what may be wrong? These 2 things were the only things done differently. Thx in advance!

I do a 50/50 mix with a premium potting soil and cactus soil. Then add pumice to that. The hole on the bottom of that clay pot is way too small. If you don't have clay pieces, you can use some drywall tape to screen over the drain hole. The newly cut plumeria needs to callus over for about a week. Dip the end in rooting hormone before planting it in dampened soil.

Hi Charles, this video was very interesting. I harvested a seed pod from my plumeria this past April and got 31 seeds; 26 of them are now 4 months old. I have them all in 7" pots and they are looking great with most of them at about 10 to 12 inches with beautiful large leaves. I read online that they love full sun, but when I put them outside in full sun for any length of time, they get droopy (I live in FL where it is pretty hot). I keep them inside a back room that is not air conditioned so it says very warm and they get the morning sun thru the window and they seem to be doing really well. At what point can they be transplanted? Should it be just in bigger pots, or can they go into the ground? I will be giving many of them away to friends and want to make sure I give them proper directions so that they continue to grow. I'm anxious to see the colors of all of them in a few years since they don't necessarily take on the color of the parent. Thank you for any guidance you can give me.

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Tracy Anderson, Dirt from your garden does not retain as much water as potting soil-- So it would be worth taking the time to get a quality potting soil to ensure the plant is hydrated between watering. Also, this is a tough time to root a plumeria during late fall and winter. The plants metabolism is naturally slower at this time of year. You may succeed in rooting the cutting; however, the best time would be spring and summer for attempting this goal! :) Let me know if you have any other questions... Charles :)

Hello Elsa, Great to hear from you! Depending on where you live, your plumeria may be getting ready to go dormant for the winter. If you send me a picture at info@IVOrganics.com, I can better help. The best time for pruning the plumeria and using its cuttings would be late winter to early spring. However, if you grow your cuttings indoors or in a greenhouse, you can make your cuttings and get them to root during the cooler fall and winter months as well! I hope this helps! :) Charles

Is rooting hormone absolutely necessary or the plant is able to root by itself? I have plumeria that was planted too deep and it has the rotting problem although not as bad. I would still like to cut the root rot out and give it a better chance at life. It's about a foot tall, currently has two mature leaves and growing new ones. I have had it for 2 years and it hasn't flowered yet. I am in Ontario, Canada zone 5-6a. The plumeria receives full sun year-round (during the winter, it stays on the southern windowsill and also receives artificial light). It's been struggling and I took it out to replant, change the potting mix etc and noticed the softness and peeling of the outer layer of the trunk that was under the surface.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 5 жыл бұрын
Priyanka Habib Hello 👋 Rooting hormone is not necessary, but increases the chances for success. Aside from the benefit of stimulating root growth, most rooting powders include anti-fungal properties to prevent the cutting from rotting, therefore aiding in keeping the cutting ‘alive.’ I hope this helps, and keep me posted!! Charles 🌱👍

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Cassandra, Depending on the size of the branch you may want to cut them into 1-2 foot sections. Larger cuttings risk drying out before rooting. I would also recommend removing the flowers as that consumes the plants energy that should be going toward rooting and new plant growth. For more cutting tips, your can apply the lessons taught on these passion fruit cuttings to do the same for your plumeria. Hello Tim, You are the artist of that plant... by keeping them so close, you will have the benefit of 3 colors in a very tight space-- and each plant performing at 1/3 of it's potential as they will be competing for sunlight, soil nutrients, etc.... Obviously, the plants will look better and be healthier if their own respective space-- but the final decision is yours. There is no right or wrong answer. @IVOrganic 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Diane D, Most Plumeria cuttings are dried for several days/ week(s) prior to sale so that the ends 'scab up' or dry seals, to prevent rotting on the pruned end that gets planted. However, once planted, you should treat the cutting as you would any other potted plant... When watering, soak it! And then, allow the soil to dry between watering, but never 'bone dry.' Please keep me posted on your Plumeria growing successes! Charles :-)

Do not water them. No roots, no water, you will rot it out. Make sure your cutting is callused at the bottom, it will swell at the rooting end, get hard, and you will see the cadmium that he talked about somewhat separate from the outer wood. If you use a pot, use 2/3 perlite to 1/3 CACTUS MIX, it is a succulent, water it in, then only mist the cutting until you see roots (bag method) or have one or two open growing leaves.

usually means over watering or incorrect soil mix. Sometimes it means it's in shock from repotting. Old lower leaves will turn yellow and fall. Sometimes it means it needs food. If you're in hot weather, you can wrap tin foil around the stem because sometimes the heat can cause it.

Hello Linda, There are two product lines: (1) The IV Organic Just-Add-Water, pint or gallon cans, where the product has a 5 year shelf life. Once you add water, you should used it within 2 weeks, or keep it frozen and defrost prior to use... Up to 2 years... possibly longer! (2) The IV Organic 23oz Ready-To-Use Spray Bottles that once you use the product, should be used within 12 months. Let me know if you have any other questions. :-) Charles

hi, I had a cutting which I'm trying to root but after putting it in pot I notice the leaves are facing down instead of up and one or two leaves are yellowish. does that mean I over watered or under watered? I'm currently watering about twice a week and the plan is in a shaded area with late afternoon sun for about a couple of hours. thanks for any advise.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Mary Chen, I can get a better idea if you send me a picture of the plant to Info@IVOrganics.com. But based on the above, I would recommend finding a location with morning sun so that it can warm up from a cool evening first thing in the morning. I've found that most plants prefer morning sun over late afternoon sun for better results. Watering 2x per week could be too much if the soil is not completely drying out between watering (assuming the cutting you are discussing above is a plumeria). I hope this helps! :-) Charles
@terrymd3293
@terrymd3293 7 жыл бұрын
Mary Chen The soil mixture correlates directly to water retention on your roots. Some people water routinely whether their plants need it or not. For Plumerias, it's better to error on them drying out. Check your soil, if it's moist, don't water place in shaded area. If the soil is dry, add 3 tbs of Epson salt to a gallon of water and water thoroughly ONCE and don't water again until its completely dried out.

I just bought a plumeria but the truck feels kind of "soft" it doesn't seem to be rotted but it was probably overwatered. Should I just stop watering it or should I do something else?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 8 жыл бұрын
Hello JC, It depends-- Plumeria's perform best with deep watering and allowing the plant root ball & soil to nearly dry out between watering. If it is in a pot, that could mean watering every 2-3 days during the summer or every 7-10 days if in the ground during the summer. Even less watering during the other seasons. Happy gardening! :-) Charles

+IV Organic thanks so much for replying! so why do you think could be the reason of trunk being kind of soft, not rotted like the one on the video but I'm worried it could be rotting and I won't know. Should I do something to help it or avoid rotting? I know it may be difficult to know without seeing it.
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome JC! If you are concerned about rot, I would try mixing some perlite into the top 2-3 inches of the potting soil. That would minimize the amount of organic matter that comes into contact with the plant's trunk and minimize the risk of root rot. I strategically add more perlite to the top soil in my pots to minimize the risk of rot. Other than that, feed your plants spring, summer and fall-- and water with caution. As the plant gets healthier, the trunk should gain its vigor and feel less soft. Good luck! :-) Charles

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Linda Tinaco, If the goal is sunburn protection, the brush on application is generally good for a full year! However, for the insect and rodent repellent protection, it is recommend to re-apply the product every 3-4 months; up to 3x per year. Charles :-)

The way it works for me: • take a 10" to 12" long cutting, the thickness as shown in this video. • cut off all the leaves, except the tiny ones at the tips. • store for *2 weeks* in a cool, dry area in the shade • moisten the end, dip about 1 inch in rooting hormone, plant in well-draining moist soil in a container at a depth of 3 inches & keep it steady by tying to a stake. Press the soil firmly around the cutting. • place the container in a shady area & only water *sparingly* when the soil has dried out -- approximately weekly. The key to prevent rot is to not over-water. Rooting should take 2-3 months, so don't move the container. When leaves sprout, it's a sign that it has rooted. Then it can be moved to a brighter area in indirect sun. Hope this helps.
