I watched Pluto when it came out, and enjoyed it quite a bit. But I have read other Urasawa works, and liked them even more. For the context this manga adapts one arc in Astroboy (Tetsuwan Atom) and reimagines it from the viewpoint of Gesicht. In the original he appeared only once as an investigator. If you are not familiar with Astroboy, then some events may seem to be rushed or contrived. Setting and parts of the story may feel a bit cliche, cause it was written back in the 1960s, and in a sense Osamu Tezuka invented some of the anime and storytelling tropes we are familiar with today. Hope you enjoy the next episodes, because it only gets more convoluted until the end, but resolution and themes it portrays are great.

Great video! You expressed so well a lot of the thoughts I also had when watching this series. I liked it a lot and recommend it to people (especially because it's relatively short). However, it also felt that it was like a 3rd or 4th season rather than first because so many side-characters were introduced with such full backstories and past interactions referenced, that it felt a little like I should go back and watch those past seasons (which sadly don't actually exist). I wonder if the manga has a lot more story that has been trimmed for anime.

Studio M2, the studio who made this, was started by Maruyama, same guy who started Madhouse (Frieren) and MAPPA (AoT Final Season) with a lot of old Madhouse employees. Fujita, the Character Designer, also did character design for Urasawa's Monster. Also, Maruyama had stated that to make a complete adaptation, they would need around 39 episodes or 3 cours. Unfortunately, companies didn't like to fund such long productions. He went to Netflix instead and was given less. LOL. Anywho, I did still love this adaptation and thought it did the manga justice. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

Try Re Zero, it's one of the best anime out thier, it's so unique and different from most of the anime. I'm sure you will love it.

Very excited you're doing this! Gesicht is German for face. It can have similar figurative uses as "face" does in English, i.e. someone's reputation, or the side of sth in front of you. (to make that "ch" sound, you wanna raise the middle of your tongue close to the roof of your mouth, like you would to say "heed" and make a hissing noise that sounds a little like "shh" and not quite like "k" - though that's not quite the way it's pronounced by Japanese speakers so... 😝) Love your AoT vids. Loved Pluto. It definitely comes behind a few of Uraswas other works but still a great watch.

I'm so glas you noticed the commentary on AI art and music!! You have no idea how many don't care to look for it because without noticing the old man is just an annoying old man who technology which is an insult for his character. Also, Paul's backstory is so important not only for his character but also because it plays a part in recognising what is the difference of between true music or art and fake media made by AIs and technology. It's all about if whoever made this Art/Music was genuinely inspired by experiences or got this "Experience" installed into them. North 2 played piano while he was thinking about his experience which makes him as sentient as any human being and his creations are genuine.

I understand your Jar Jar Binks feelings, but you should revisit the rest of Demon Slayer. Later, they feature those side characters less. Just like you are glad you didn't quit too soon on this series, you'll feel the same way about DS. BTW I loved Pluto.
