The whole production him and Ben (the art director) did everything they could to give us tons of creative freedom to experiment and find these characters. @@RefnRes while that would be great in many cases, in most it is really hard to figure out WHO was the actual creator as people come and go to the IP, it changes hands and so on, and it would lead to massive exhausting trials for the ownership of the IP (and some shitnugget with most money to spend on lawyers would win anyways). Part of the sucking up to holywood is crediting people who had nothing to do with a project but just want to be credited. Best example IMO would be Elon Musk. He never worked at PayPal but keeps claiming he founded it. He invested in Tesla and pushed out founders and now claims he is the sole founder pretty much. Or McDonalds - the corporation has nearly nothing to do with the McDonald brothers. I can go on but I guess you get the point. But to further my point - let's say this would happen to Fallout and Bethesda shelves it to write it off on taxes. Who would it go to? Interplay/Black Isle guys who made the original games? Technically Tim Cain came up with the idea but Avellone, Boyarsky and Sawyer were also crucial for the creative process. Does it go to Amazon because they made an original show set in the universe? Does it go to Bryan Fargo as he was the head of Interplay when first game was released? Who does it go to.

I remember seeing Olan's video announcing he was getting to make a comic. Despite the massive restraints put on him just to be allowed to finish it the sheer joy on his face is just infectious and tear jerking. The fact that studios hold on to these IPs like dragons hoarding gold with no intention of using them but fighting tooth and nail to stop anyone else making money off them is just so shitty.

I feel really bad for this man. I really enjoyed Final Space for how interesting and intense it was despite its flaws. But of course a stupid merger just had to ruin everything. For what it’s worth, getting a graphic novel to conclude the story is better than not being able to finish it. I hope Olan is doing well despite all that has happened. He really didn’t deserve to have his dreams destroyed nor be forced to have the plot changed by the scum that is WB.

You might have to cut corners and abridge things by quite a lot to make it feasible on the smaller scale, especially if you don’t end up having the same runaway success as the examples you brought up, but there is genuinely nothing worse for your show than putting it in the hands of money men who think they know art better than artists. The comments section of a video discussing someone who’s show was cut to be a tax write off is the wrong place to try and argue for going the conventional route

I worked on Season 2 as an animator--it was a bit surreal seeing some of my scenes in your video (even if it was to criticize them, haha)! Final space was the only show where I truly felt inspired to go above and beyond when I was working on it, putting in hours of (sometimes unpaid) overtime and tons of revisions, working without backgrounds at some points because production issues, etc. Just because I felt like I was helping out someone, a fellow artist, make their passion project instead of some regular TV show. For example, for Final Space my revisions and animation changes were almost always to make the scene flow better, animation smoother, convey more emotion, while in one of the shows I worked on afterward we had a mass edit/revision because it would "help the company sell more merch" lol. I also just genuinely enjoyed both seasons of FS (admittedly 1 more than 2) It was probably the show I worked on that made me really appreciate my job and working in the field. Even then I could feel that the executives were trying to meddle with the show to make it their version of "appealing to the audience." When we were reaching the end of production, we would watch every episode as it comes out after work in the studio. And I vividly remember being disappointed that some of the scenes I thought were heartfelt and that we worked very hard to translate from the storyboard into animation edited into dumb jokes that I felt ruined the atmosphere. Parts were cut out entirely sometimes! Weird sounds were added! Beats of silence that I felt added much more to the humor turned into honestly not very funny and basic jabs/jokes. Changes that I felt were not Olan's decisions because they didn't feel like his brand. Unfortunately after that, I was moved onto a different show in the studio, so I never got to work on season 3, but I heard from my coworkers who worked on it that it was looking like it was being freed from controlling producers. After that, I heard about the cancelation and the tax-write off and I was so shocked and disappointed that they were just allowed to do that?! I'm glad Olan managed to get a comic book to end off Final Space, but it's like the bare minimum. I'm excited to see Godspeed and where it goes! This field brings me both the most joy and also infinite frustration. The business side of animation and the artistic side will always be at odds. I understand if the artistic side had complete and total control we might get debacles like the Princess and The Cobbler, but generally I feel like the executive side is much more cruel. I wish it can change, but I honestly don't know how we can go about it. I hope I won't get into trouble with my future workplaces (when I can find a job, because the anim field is hecked right now) for putting this on the internet, hahaha.

I mean you are essentially saying that it was a wash and torching it. Preservation of art should be first and foremost, and honestly they should be forced to surrender the IP when they decide to do it. Make it public domain or better yet be surrendered to the original creator/owner of the IP. Personally, I'd NEVER surrender an IP to a network, not in a million years. I'd given them licensing rights or marketing/merchandising rights sure, but to entirely surrender an IP is asking for a fisting. Funding is the reason it exists, but with crowd funding and other avenues being opened up daily this "norm" is becoming a thing of the past, THANK GAWD. Funny part is that networks could genuinely be a good thing if they didn't take their grubby little hands and demand ALL of everything and split the IP with the creator or just kept a portion of the revenue. Heck, they could even to a 75/25 split and let the creator hold IP and just lease it out and make a killing while not destroying the IP. But see, the GOAL is to screw over the creator and everyone involved. They can't CONTROL everything you do if you still own it, they can't have that. You need to be a good little puppet with their gross little hand planted FIRMLY right up your....

The biggest example is of course, the internet archive. Which is currently being sued in an attempt for them to be shut down, so private entities can pay wall all of the "lost" media it contains. It is solely supported by donations, and under attack by greedy vastards hell bent on hording anything that may generate value with no further work required.

Honestly all they need to do is change the ruling a bit, since at the moment there isn't a real downside for a company to do it. I'd add a few downsides: 1. Only the original publishers/companies that released it get penalized for posting it. Or those monetizing it. 2. The property becomes Royalty Free. 3. Allow other groups to BUY the rights to it and be able to revive it, while the original company that DID the write off get nothing. *From the IRS in an auction* 4. By writing it off, they lose ALL rights to it copywrite or otherwise. Oh and make it so something can't be written off until it's been released for a few years, and it MUST have a physical release.

This video really hit me like a punch to the face. For the past 10 years or so, I’ve been working on a story project that means everything to me. It started as a means of escaping a harsh reality when I was younger, to getting more serious about it and wanting to learn how to animate when I was older, to me finally being ready to start sharing this piece of my soul to the outside world. But just before I could take that first, terrifying step, I got scared. I got so terrified that it could be taken away from me. These characters had grown up with me, and it felt like they each held a piece of my soul within them. Imagining having that torn away from me felt absolutely world ending. So I convinced myself that I was fine with never sharing anything to anyone outside my tiny circle. Of constantly working towards an empty goal. This man’s story hit me in all the right places. I have never heard of him or of this show until today. But if he can keep creating, keep sharing his stories despite everything, maybe I can be brave too. Heck, my story probably isn’t even that good. But every story has the potential to touch someone, to inspire something greater. And as long as it finds that one person, it would be worth it. (Also I don’t expect anyone to really see this, but in the event people do read this, don’t follow this account. It’s a throw away. If I ever post on KZbin, it won’t be here.)

I was at the same one! I showed up WAY too early thinking there’d be a huge line. His crew was sweet enough to let me help out with serving pizza and Jones soda all day. He also told me that Olan was in the hospital very shortly before that specific tour stop and was INSANELY exhausted, but still pushed through all day for us fans. I’ll never forget how genuine and kind they all were.

Exactly, honestly if I were to make a series I’d rather take my chances on KZbin. Take Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss for example, Hazbin hotel keeps getting shit on by the network really limiting how much they can do and could get shut down if they refuse to meet the demands like episode count and run times that dampen their ability to tell a good story; Meanwhile Helluva Boss releases an episode at a time whenever and however they please, they don’t have someone constantly breathing down their neck waiting to hit them with a cancellation or modification (within reason obviously)

I started watching Olan mostly for the storytimes and such. Like you, I kinda lost sight of his channel and I did know he had other projects but didn't really focus on them. But I do remember finding his channel again ... through the video where he talked about everything that happened... the loss of the soda shop, the troubles his family is dealing with and Starscream's death. Like oooff, this man has been through a lot. And it wasn't even the end. I am genuinely so impressed by his view of the world and his drive. I wish I could be a little bit like him when it comes to positivity.

Great video. I was lucky to work on season 3, we did half the season from studio, and the second half was produced remotely. However it was a pretty smooth ride, and everyone were looking into working on season 4. I don't really remember how it was announced that the show was cancelled, but I remember how heart broken everyone on the team were, and I remember that the next season was already cooking we all were just waiting for green light and some even refused to go to another productions in anticipation. It was a great show, and it's incredibly sad that it ended this way. I'm just happy that I was presented with opportunity to work on something that I've been a huge fan of.

Man balloon shop is the number one influence to everything comedy I feel today. I have friends and family I shared these videos with and still reference today. I watched his show and actually enjoyed it, it was like a rick and Morty vibe before its time and actually resonated outside Olans personality. I even visited his soda parlor back in 2017. This man is genuine and puts out content that he loves and wants to see himself. He’s the person who’s can sense bullshit like all of us and broke through the scene and said no to these huge productions that run everything we see everyday. Olan Rogers is really a great person to creators to witness. If you have any ambition or dream for telling a story, here is a man who has documented so much of his personal life and journey to create his stories. He has suffered, and still remains a passionate voice for perseverance. There aren’t enough people as good in the world as Olan who get to put themselves out there and be seen like he has.

This is a great video! I worked on storyboards for FS and can confidently say that with the first season TBS constantly pushed the jokes and one liners because they so badly wanted it to be more of a comedy than a drama, so that's not completely Olan's fault. Any time he wanted drama or an emotional moment TBS would go "throw in a joke," like during the Avocato flashback sequence. Most of us rolled our eyes every time lmao!

Final Space is, and always will be, one of, if not my favorite show, of all time. When I heard it was cancelled and then written off, I was genuinely the most depressed about any piece of media I ever sunk my time into. I still own the season 1 & 2 Blu-Ray's and my Mooncake plushie because nowadays they mean a lot to me for a show that helped me not only get through hard times, but also motivated me to keep going with my creative visions and ideas. We truly need more shows like Final Space. What made it great was just how unique it was. I'm a super fan of animation media and I fully agree Final Space is far from a perfect show. But it does have heart and that heart shows through in every scene. I have friends that don't really watch animation, but they loved Final Space. This show touched people in so many ways. But coming back to the uniqueness. There's almost a current going through animation at the moment. You can take most shows and they'll fit some sort of niche. You have the funny humour shows that kinda span the whole of modern animation. You have the Disney shows (idk how to call them) like Amphibia, Steven Universe, Owl House, Gravity Falls and the like, with a ton of heart and made for kids specifically (but they really don't feel like it). And then you have the super serious like Arcane or Primal (I can't think of other examples, but you get my drift). Final Space was in none of these categories and it doesn't have a category of its own. It could easily blend the accepted styles into some sort of semi-cohesive mess, but you went away from it thinking "that part was so great, even though the rest was not that incredible". Which is honestly a great achievement. Kept you on your toes. I dunno. In a world so dominated by conformity, Final Space was an outlier and I enjoyed it for what it was. I knew that I was gonna watch something I am not gonna see anywhere else. And I think this is what the world needs. Sure we are reaching new heights in the previous categories that were basically impossible just a decade ago, but the way the medium evolves is exactly through these genre bending works. P.S. I still cry about Infinity Train sometimes. It's just a disaster that such incredible works are deleted and forgotten about.

This is such a brilliant video. I put it on with the intention of it being background noise but ended up watching the video in full. This was really captivating and Olan's story is incredibly inspirational. Final Space always felt to me like huge passion project for everyone onboard and that shines through in its atmosphere and in it's best moments like The Other Side. I'm really glad Olan is getting to finish the story he wanted to tell, even if it didn't get the chance to reach its full potential, and I'm glad he's moving forward with Godspeed. This video really connected with me and made me feel inspired to try and tell the stories I want to tell, even if they aren't amazing or polished, because there's bound to be someone out there who's inspired by them to tell their own story. I'm going to be thinking about that 'failing upwards' line for a long time.

Ok, I came back to give this video another chance today and I’m glad I did. Aside from the Raid Shadow Legends ad, I love it. I was a huge Balloonshop fan, the first video I saw was Take it to the Next Level and my friends quoted their stuff constantly. When it was announced that Olan Rogers had a tv show coming out I was pretty surprised. I was like “no way, the Balloonshop guy?” I hadn’t heard that name in years and I felt Final Space really deserved more attention than it was getting.

I first watched Final Space when the first season dropped on Netflix and fell in love with it to the point where it became one of my favourite adult shows of all time. Even though it had a lot of flaws, I fell in love with the characters, story, world building, comedy, animation but above all you can tell how much love amd passion was put into itand it was one the reasons why want to do a career in art So when I heard it was being written a tax write off, I wasn't just upset, but angry. Angry over the fact that a show that Owen and many others but their blood, sweat and tears into was written off so that Warner could save money, and it's the same with other projects such as Coyote vs Acme and Batgirl. I'm at least glad that Owen is able to finish the story with the graphic novel I have so much for respect for Owen and I'm looking forward to see his future projects

I do have a dream of making my stories reach real audiences someday and my parents keep telling me to work for a studio. This is the reason why I don't want to. I'm scared of what they would do to my story and what I care for. I don't know much about Olan but I empathize with his situation. Everything crashing down all at once.
