Plymouth Duster vs Ford Mustang Mach 1- Roadkill Extra

This seems insane, but Steve Dulcich made the statement that a ’70-’71 Plymouth Duster might be in the same league styling-wise as the ’69-’70 Ford Mustang Mach 1, the latter of which is generally heralded as a pinnacle of automotive design. I think the Mustang simply looks sporty while the Duster looks more utilitarian. I always loved the Mustang while I always really liked the Duster so if I had to choose I would take the Mustang.

the '69 mustang fastback is a masterpiece! I can appreciate the duster as an enthusiast but it doesn't even play in the same league as the '69 mustang when it comes to aesthetic design. Nothing about the duster's aesthetics is comparable in beauty to the mustang. If I saw them in my rearview mirror, the mustang says "move out of the way"! The duster says "hi, I'm granny".

While i agree that the 69 Mustang Fastback is one of the best cars ever made... i like the looks of the duster too... my dad and i would have these arguments when i was a teenager cause i said dusters, mavericks, satellites, and a few other cars were good looking, but my dad would call them junk... i still like them and now that their popularity is growing my dad is just now catching on when we could have had these cars for a steal 15-18 years ago... it just seems like now that all these old muscle cars are now getting to be over 50 years old people are collecting them and putting them away... and with that people are moving over to the “lesser” known cars and fixing those up too especially with how easy it is mow with LS engine swaps...

You should go to the Mecca for Mopar fans. I've been to the Mopar Nationals once, made less sense to me than some cults. Had a great time though. Nuttiest car I saw was a twin turbo slant six making obscene amounts of power. As I type that, Dulcich needs to build a twin turbo slant six because Roadkill!!

James Ferro I'm just messin'. Personally, I think the front of the Mustang is better looking and more stylized than the econobox front end of the Duster, but the Duster has a more smooth, sculpted rear end which I appreciate. Really from I style standpoint, they've both got their ups and downs.

The '69 Mustang was the pinnacle year. Ford got EVERYTHING right that year! The Duster... You can make them look good, but they need a little help. I just finished painting a '71 Demon, and the body lines are quite unique on the A body of that era... The '69 Mustang wins the best interior of the two, hands down!

The mustang's front end just looks so much better than than the duster, it's incredibly iconic, in fact they still use similar designs for the modern mustangs today. Then there is the boss 302 which just flat out looks amazing and is probably, the best looking mustang of all time for me, I'm not even American and I love the look of these cars.

It was NOT a Boss 429. Boss 429 had massive hood scoops with no badging what so ever on the scoop. The hood scoop on John Wicks is those typically found on Mach 1's with non-functioning scoop hoods. Also, like my previous comment above... the owner of the car in RL has stated it's a Mach 1.

I'll tell you a Mustang-Dart story. I was driving a Dodge Dart home one winter night and it started raining. The rain then froze as it hit the road. Very quickly, a thick layer of ice had formed and the road had become dangerously slippery. You just don't go out on the road when it gets this bad, but I was a kid then. I came down a section where the road twisted a bit (for drainage or whatever.) At that point I lost all forward control. It was so slippery, it was like everything on the car was disconnected. Pumping the crap out of the brakes did nothing. The steering did nothing. I remember thinking "oh shit..." I was going to go where it wanted. I plowed to a stop into a big snow drift on the side of the road. I was relatively unscathed, but the front wheels were off the road in deep snow and I was totally stuck there. Before I can even get out of the car, along comes a 16 year old girl in a red '66 Mustang. She sees me, and she doesn't react until she's like 50 feet from the car. She locks the brakes but it doesn't slow down, and the road is so slippery she can't steer around me. I cringe waiting for the impact. The Rustang slides right into the side of the Dodge. BOOM. The Dodge is actually moved over a couple feet from the impact. Minutes later, a good Samaritan stops and together, we push the injured Mustang to the side of the road. We look her car over and the entire right front corner of the car is completely smashed up to the windshield. The poor car was toast and the girl is not happy. I was shocked, it was really bad. Quite a shame, really, but at least the girl wasn't hurt. The good Samaritan then says, let's go look and see how your car is. I'll never forget this. I was prepared for the worst. We walked over to the side of the Dodge, and I did a double take. I couldn't see anything wrong. I couldn't believe my eyes, like, this can't be real. There was no damage. There were two small quarter sized dents in the side of the bumper. That's it. No scrapes, no damaged sheet metal, no broken glass. Nothing. It was like a fricken miracle. The dude was like, "Oh man, you got nothin' to worry about." Even though it was late at night, a guy in a nearby house let us use his telephone to call a tow and the cops (no cell phones back then!) The sheriff came by and filled out an accident report. Then I fired the Dodge up and a few big dudes who had gathered at the accident scene helped push as I backed the Dart out of the snowbank and back up on the road. With white knuckles, I drove it home. That was like 40 years ago and I have that car in my garage this very day. We never fixed anything, didn't need to. It still has the two little dents in the bumper as a reminder of that episode. As the years have passed, I have come to believe that car has a life of it's own. Always felt bad for the girl with the red Mustang though.

I didn't get rid of all my muscle cars and still have them, including a Duster with big block and 4 speed. Anyone who owned a Mustang of that era knows how poorly built they were. There is a reason why pro stock was build on the back of the Duster and not the Mustang.

Send the white coats guys with police escort immediately. Also look at the interiors. It's not even in the same universe. The mustang kills the duster all day long. Now, if you want to compare mopar vs ford, put the challenger against the mustang. Okay now you have a really good argument both says. (Although I still prefer the mustang interior.)

v8felon The lean years came much later. The first gen Mach 1 came when the muscle cars were peaking - in '69. Camaros, GTO's, Cudas, Chargers, Chevelles etc. where mostly sold as V8 cars at this time. Hell even '70 the base 318 V8 Challenger was faster than the '70 351 2bbl Mach 1. And when the lean years started in the early 70's, you still had the Trans Am, which was the only real V8 game in town after '71, and on for the next 10 years. During the gen 2 of the Mach 1, even with a V8, it was the most anemic thing on the road. I've owned a few classic muscle cars over the years, so I recon I know the difference. Here's a quick overview. '70 Mustang 390 GT '69Mustang 302 Boss '67 Charger 383 '69 Charger R/T 440 4bbl '73 Trans Am SD '78 Trans Am Y88 W72 '65 Malibu SS '69 Chelvelle 396 The Mustangs were always the slowest. By the way, the Mach 1 was a package, so comparing it to how other base models were sold, makes little sense. Most Mustangs in '69 and on were still sold with either the Thrifi 6 and base Windsor 302 2bbl V8. Both were horribly weak.

The two cars in question were built for different types of driving. One is a muscle car and one is a family get around mobile. Very difficult to compare. If you were driving 100 mph. which one will actually make it around a corner ? Crusing down the street, which one will be pulled over by the cops more times ? What one will help you fill the passenger seat on a Friday night ? Which one is easier to change all spark plugs on ? What one had serious overheating issues ? What one can be a sleeper ? And most important , what trunk holds the most Beer ?

It's not even close. The 69 Mustang Sportsroof/fastback ( doesn't need to be a Mach 1 ) is one of the best looking cars made. It's one of, if not the meanest looking Mustangs built( 67 Shelby & current GT350's are right there too ) . I don't think there is a more menacing looking car then a black 69 Boss 429 with a slightly raised rear and some huge tires on the back. Comparing the 69 Mustang to a Duster is like comparing the looks of a chevette to a Ferrari! The Duster's styling is just boring to me.

My dad was hot for an early 1970s Duster that he wanted to buy me as my first car in 1979. Pale yellowish beige, all vinyl interior with a slant-6 and column-shift; I turned it down. He was mad! A few months later, he had cooled down and spotted a 1972 Mustang coupe on the Datsun used car lot. Medium blue, blue interior, 302 and a floor-shift automatic. I accepted it on the theory that if I turned this one down, I might be walking throughout high school. The Mustang was definitely the better of the two. It fueled my life-long love affair with 1971-1973 Mustangs, of which I have owned several. Although I do not currently own one, I look constantly online for the right one for me. My current kick is 20-year-old BMWs, of which we own three. E38: (The German sedan that a muscle car guy can appreciate.) That Cuda convertible in the background deserves some attention.

Here in Mexico, the Duster is Chrysler's Chevy Nova. There is plenty of them still available. My dad used to drive a brand new 6cyl Automatic to college back in the 70's

Frietpan, a 1970 Chevelle is damn near a perfect car style wise ad I say that never really caring for any GMs minus a few finned Caddie's.

Bah, a lot of younger people will vote Mopar simply because there has been years and years of Mustang hate built up between the ricer crowd and even more modern muscle car/import wars. The 69/70 Mustang fastback is instantly recognizable, even by people that know almost nothing about muscle cars. Further, the 70 Mustang took everything these guys complained about on the 69 and removed/refined it. Bottom line is Mopar guys see a car they can drop a hot 340/440/400 wedge into and have a fun, potent respect commanding car(amongst gearheads) and that puts a bias into the mix. Car guys don;t just look at sheet metal, they look at what's under the hood too, and even though the average person can't see the engine, gearheads and car guys will read between the lines and see the car as a whole package and not just wheels and fenders. That Duster with a hot 400 Wedge looks a lot better then that Mustang with a mild 2bbl 351W, as an example. On the other hand, that Duster with 318 Magnum swapped out of a Dakota looks pretty drab next to that Mustang with a 428SCj and a toploader 4 spd in it. Horsepower makes the paint shine brighter after all.

I'm part of the younger crowd and I would want the mustang body with a 351 that's been amped up and a stick preferably a 5 speed or 6 speed. Although I'm currently working on my project truck an 1982 s10 with a 350 chevy 4 bolt main and a 350 turbo tranny that i am going to swap for a tr6060 6 speed manual tranny from a Cadillac cts-v and replace the s10 rear end with a ford 8.8 rear end from a explorer with 3.73 gears and disc brakes and hopefully when i'm done I will have a fun toy to drive up to my local rod runs or go to the local drag track

Could not agree more. The scale of the duster is a bit smaller than people think, and it is perfection. The ford is just fake scoops and bulges. Duster is just clean perfect lines with on forgeries. Duster defines underrated. I've said this for years and I'm sticking to it. Same goes for Dart vs chevelle. Objectively, chevelle is a bulbous lumbering ox. Darts are sharp pleasing efficient of line with nothing extraneous. Perfection.
