PM Rush Hour Railfanning at Newark Penn Station. I know I have not been uploading videos recently because I have not been out railfanning that much. Anyways, this video was taken somewhere in October. This video will include the PM Rush Hour in Newark Penn Station. You will see a lot of trains including NJT Hoboken - Bay Head Direct trains. It seems that some Southbound NEC NJT trains aren't driven with a dedicated locomotive, but rather with multiple railcars embedded with motors (on these trains, multiple cars have extended caternary arms). Why is this?

In general electric multiple units (EMUs) like the Arrow IIIs you see here are the ideal style of train for local commuter service because they accelerate smoother and more quickly than a push/pull train even with an electric locomotive. That's why similar configurations are so commonly used outside the US, and even within the US on other systems' electrified lines (even within the NYC region, Metro North and LIRR mainly do push/pull service on their diesel lines and use MUs on their electric lines). In NJT's case, though, the Arrows are poorly suited to the North Jersey Coast line as the part shared with the NEC uses Amtrak's 12kV, 25Hz system and the part NJT electrified on their own beyond Perth Amboy is a more common 25kV 60Hz. The Arrows can theoretically run on either, but it takes some manual setup on each car to switch from one mode to the other, so at Newark you generally only see them in NEC service because it's impractical to use them on a route that uses both voltages. All Arrow III's actually have an orange triangular sticker at the front indicating whether they are currently configured for 25kV or 12kV.

More than half of the AEM-7's built got them when they were rebuilt
