PMBOK 6: Perform Integrated Change Control Change Request Flow

This video helps us in visualizing how change request flows among various processes.
What is a Change Request? It is a tool for a change in the established plan or project document. So we should have a plan in place before we raise a change request.
Initiating and planning group has nothing to do with Change Request. These process groups don’t take change request as input & most of the time not as output (Procurement planning being an exception).
Executing and Monitoring & Control process groups deal with changes. In this video, you will see how the change request get generated at various places.
In Executing Process Group you may or may not realize Change Requests. Change Requests goes directly to Integrated Change Control for further action. In case you don’t realize any change then the output is Work Performance Data (WPD), which go to the respective Knowledge Area Controlling Process. Here WPD can either generate another change requests or Work Performance Information (WPI). In the case of WPI as an output, it goes to Monitoring & Control where there are 2 possibilities, one is change request being generated, else Work Performance Report is generated. In the case of Change Request, it goes to “Approve/Reject/Deferred.”
Once a change request is received, the project team should not act on it immediately. They should first do impact analysis, it is then sent to respective stakeholder for decision making follwed by decision on the change requests. CRs can be approved, reject or deferred. Then these changes are logged in ChangeLog, a repository of detail of all the changes.
Then based on the changelog update, the project management plan is updated followed by communicating it to respective stakeholders.

Identify Stakeholders( initiation) , Define activities, develop schedule, plan risk response and plan procurement output is the change requests. 1 process in initiating and 4 process in planning output is change requests.

To clarify (And mentioned in the video), the change request outputs for these 5 processes won't come during the initial setup/creation of the process during Initiating & Planning; they will come later when Executing and Monitoring/Controlling processes have determined an adjustment to these 5 processes is necessary.

I have a question, as soon as a stakeholder suggest a change what would you do? My question is: I evaluate the impact? or first I have to documented and then I proceed to make a preliminary impact before sent it to the board? SECOND QUESTION: When do I have to put down in the change log? As soon as the stakeholder asks for the change or at the end when the board approved/rejected?

The change management plan explains what you should first. You need to document the first change request. Else how would it be available to all to analyze its impact? The change log need a continuous update. Whenever you get a request, update it. When you are in review- update it. When you get approval, update it. And if it gets rejected, update it. It tracks the progress of each change.

WHO in case of PMP depends on your project management plan, usually as part of it you have RACI where you identify it. PM is expected to get it done, in many case PM may do it.

It is is a good question. If we identify a new risk and if we need to implement a risk response - In this case, you have not mentioned anything in the baselined plan you have to raise a change request. Other case is you have a consolidated contingency reserve you may plan to use this reserve instead of raising a change request. If you have a risk reserve, then there is no need to raise a change request because there is already a provision in the baselined plans. I am still confused by some of the questions that the answer is "Submit a change request first" instead of evaluate the impact. I assume if you do not see the question stated a change request has been submitted, then your next step is to submit one first?

Sometimes an input to the control processes in each knowledge area is "an approved change request" what is the purpose of that? I dont see CRs flowing into your knowledge area control processes in your flow chart, only out.

I figure it out, sometimes "approved" change requests (CRs) flow into the Direct and manage work, control quality, and control procurement because the approved CRs themselves effect the control process. makes sense.

During execution in a Hybrid project, one key stakeholder requests the Project Manager for a change in a work package for which work has not started yet. What should the Project Manager do NEXT? a) Ask the stakeholder to raise a formal change request b) Document the change request in the change log

Thank you for asking. Once we have approved change request, the project manager needs to ensure that the project management plan (schedule, resource, work package, scope etc) gets updated based on the approved change. The execution happens based on the plan. Some changes need an act in this week, some may need to act after month.
