Worked on them for two years in the early 80's and took the kids out of school to see them do a final farewell flyover in 2006 at the Calverton Plant where they were built. I started to cry when the disappeared over the trees and I knew I'd never see another one fly again. One of a kind aircraft, nothing we have ever produced has ever come close to it....

I got to A-School in '98 to be an AD. I told the 1st class I want to go to a Tomcat squadron. 20 years later I still remember his reaction, along with many other 1st classes "HAHAHHAHA - no you don't!" It was the most beautiful jet the US had to offer. I was just a museum in Oakland that has one they are restoring for static display, and I had to spend time with it. Mans reaction was top tier. Held nothing back. Life meant nothing but those tomcats for those moments
@KLRGT500KR5 жыл бұрын
The guy's reaction was what used to happen when people saw the F-14s performing at air shows. If you think blue angels were impressive, F-14s especially flown by 'Snort' Snodgrass was on another level. It was not about making cute little hearts in precision formation in the skies. Tomcat was all about brute, pulse pounding power and performance. It was a total beast and it let you know it was not playing around. Tomcat would literally make your heart shake in your chest. 'Snort' would come in guns blazing at 600 knots just 50 feet over the ground yanked the stock doing quick aileron rolls right followed by a hard full reversal left pulling 9+ G swapping ends at high AoA generating huge vapors just 50 feet over the ground. People used to go wild as the ground rumbled from the engine sound and the F-14 climbed vertically straight up with those big 30 feet flames out pushing the Tomcat straight over your head of those afterburners into the clouds doing aileron rolls like the a corkscrew all the way till it vanished in the clouds 20,000 feet above. It was really the king of the skies. RIP legend!

They were retired early to create a artifical "urgent" need for the JSF, about a quarter of this group still have "new car smell". The US Taxpayer screwed again.

Could they have done it...sure, absolutely, however, prior incidents of property damage prevented it. You are right about the F-18 but here is the comparison. F-18 engine 18000 pds of thrust. F-14 B/D 27-30000 pds of thrust. If you want me to explain further send me an email..

As I ground pounder I prefered the F-14 cruzin around with 2x 2000lbs JDAMs. Now they(and I) are retired and the US Navy is looking for a long range platform. "TOMCATS!" that line gets me i wish they werent outdated
@2ZZGE1003 жыл бұрын
They were not outdated at all. The F-14D Super Tomcat had some of the most modern and advanced avionics including a brand new APG-71 radar, which was the most advanced in the 90s. The GE-F110 engines with 60,000 lbsf gave it monster power. It had the highest number of sorties in its final year when it was being used in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Yeah, it was costly to maintain, but considering the type of versatility it had to accomplish missions it was capable of performing, it was totally justified. It was killed due to terrible Congress politics including Dick Cheney's politics against Grumman.
@Nikon2346216 жыл бұрын
I know this because I spent 6 years working on that plane and another 2 working on the engines. I know what they sound like with A/Bs a blazing. Those are F-14Ds with a more powerful engine. If it was an A model A/B might have been used. F-14 B/D hardly use their A/Bs accept during airshows. A models use them all the time. This video was shot after all A models were retired.
