HeyI’mLayne they also thought that the plague spread through “bad air”, so they thought things that smelled nice would protect them. Their costumes were actually fairly effective against flea bites too because they were almost completely covered.

Zackary Matthews No. The bubonic plague was not an airborne disease, and if it was, we’d probably have been extinct by now. The early (and late) plague doctors waxed their suits with animal fat so the miasmas (Bad or “evil” smells, see Miasma Theory) wouldn’t stick to their clothes. Coincidentally, this kept disease-carrying fleas from nesting on their body, and this was observed by an Italian doctor, but he didn’t make the connection. The reason why they put posies, lavender, and an assortment of pleasant-smelling plants, to combat the miasmas.

They also filled the beaks of the masks with nice scents such as herbs and flowers to mask the smell of dead bodies. My plague doctor in the black robe who gifts the flowers is named Herb. :)

i know this is seposed to be a cartoony art style of animation...but You Nail It With The Atmosphere! despite how silly the doctor act and looked beacause their cartoony style..you really can feel the creepy atmosphere, the sorrow in them(even if you can't see their face), and just how lonely they are just by making them very small in the field(it really emphasises that the place is empty) as if they were engulf by their serounding(you know, the background ratio is biger compare to the actor's ratio in the shot)you always keep your distance from the character..there were at least 4 meters at minimum between the camera and the character in most of your "close up"(too far to be called close up, again you keep your distance and emphasise the lonelines). 10/10!!

The rings referred to the rashes that formed in rose or pink/red blotches on the skin, Posies were used to mask the smell of rotting flesh on the infected and inside the doctor's masks, of course atishoo/ashes referred to the burning of the corpses, and we all fall down was a dreary line that meant the end of the city.

The song “Pockets Full of Posies” was actually based off of the fact that they would stuff the dead bodies/clothes of the people who died of the plague with posies so that it would not smell as bad when they would burn them. The plague doctor got some posies, which were probably going to be used in the burning of bodies, to cheer his fellow plague doctor friend up :). They were also stuffed in the plague doctor’s masks as well
