Pocket Holes / Pocket Screws EXPLAINED!! (How Pocket Joinery Works--Kreg Pocket Jigs--PROS AND CONS)
Pocket holes and pocket screws have dominated the topic of joinery for the last 30 years. And yet, pocket joinery is still a mystery for many carpentry and woodworking newcomers. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain how pocket joinery works!
JOINERY is simply the practice of joining boards together.
Throughout woodworking history, this was either done by fastening boards through their ends (butt joints); fastening boards by means of intermediary pieces (dowels, biscuits and splines combined with glue and pressure); or fastening boards through complex, mating cuts (complex joinery such as dovetails, mortise and tenons, or half-laps).
Each of these methods presents its own problems. Some aren't very strong, or are unsightly. Some require a lot of messy glue setups. And some are just too complicated for newcomers.
Pocket joinery made fast, clean joinery accessible for new carpentry and woodworkers.
Pocket joinery involves using custom boring guides (pocket jigs), special drill bits, and custom fasteners (pocket screws) to create fast, easy joins between boards.
Pocket jigs drill 15-degree holes in the faces of boards. Special pocket screws can seat down in these pocket holes, and fasten adjoining boards.
KREG is the largest pocket joinery company in the world.
The process of learning pocket joinery can be learned in minutes, and used by anyone. Many cabinets and pieces of furniture on the market these days are assembled with some type of pocket joinery.

Pocket Screws and concealed screws have been found in furniture dating back to the beginning of the Renascence period. In the earliest days, a chisel or gouge was used to cut the initial slope. Then a small drill was used to counter bore for the head of the screw. Since the slope could be removed as a single piece, the same piece was often used to refill/cover the slope after the screw was in place. As the shape and grain where a perfect match, these fasteners have often been missed by even the most experienced of observers. In some cases, they were only discovered during x-ray examination of valuable antiques.

As a rookie DIYer I used Kreg Pocket screws for the first time a few years ago. Most important advice is to test your depth settings by joining two piece of scrap wood that's the same thickness as your piece. Pocket Screws/holes are great.

Another very helpful and informative video. I have been toenailing screws by pre-drilling the path of the screws or nails. But I have been wanting to look into the pocket hole jigs. The video was quick and the method was clear. Thanks for the quick introduction to this technique.

I have a Kreg K2000 that was purchased in 2000, a Kreg Jig Mini and last year purchased a Micro-pocket jig and bit. I have used it extensively for bookshelves, faceframes, furniture repair and shop cabinet builds. The Micro-pocket is designed for 1/2" thick material and i find it especially useful when doing repairs on chair leg stretchers. I am a big fan of pocket holes. Thanks for the great video.

A sound video to de-mystify the technique and encourage woodworkers to give it a try, I've come to use pocket holes regularly as a reliable way to make strong joints that don't need big clamping systems to get the desired finish. I'm not a carpenter, just a hobby enthusiast, and they have helped no end. I've even been able to join pretty thick wood pieces together, making interesting top surfaces for simple units for around the house. Whilst most joints try to look invisible, I've even found a nice feature in deliberately putting the pocket on show, back filling the hole with a very different wood plug, so that the nice little ovals are on show in the finished product. For the pretty small cost investment, I'd really recommend this system, it's massively improved my confidence in projects, and has encouraged me to be more creative in my builds. Great video! Good to hear that even the pros use pocket holes out in the field. There are some "elitist " woodworkers that try to put down people who use them, not realizing that they have opened up the hobby to an entire generation who did not have fathers, grandfather's, or school shop classes to teach them. Pocketholes are a great starting point to build skills and confidence, and just maybe you may want to tackle some.of those "fancier" joinery methods later on!

I was always very keen to get into some wood working or joinery. I spent some time as a procurement manager for a shopfitting establishment procuring materials for the carpenters who would make customer projects for restaurant chains and franchises and watching the carpenters work would often scare me off of attempting woodwork (especially with my previously failed attempts at cabinets). Since finding pocket hole systems I have been on a woodworking rampage as it has really helped me get out some professional looking and sturdy pieces with so much ease. Keep up the great content!! For glue and screw joints a couple dots of CA glue with activator give an instant bond that lets you drive the screws without clamping. Worth the try.

Ethan, this was another great video (as usual). You might want to mention that Kreg (and other manufacturers) sell plugs to conceal the screws where appearance is important in exposed applications. These include white plastic, pine, and hardwoods such as oak and maple. They also offer tooling to cut your own plugs.

Awesome! This is the best (quick) overview of joinery. Should be 101 for any shop teacher, when entering box building. I even Kreg Jig my Face frames. Not debating which is better, but if you are in production build, or custom remodel… Kreg systems and Jigs are my best employee!

Nice presentation (as always). I bought the Kreg 320 about a year and a half ago and while I haven't used it extensively, where I have used it, it was the perfect solution. Quick. Easy. Strong. I have also purchased a few Kreg clamps so my investment is definitely over $100, but for me, it's been worth it. I have made my own plugs when I've needed them. I cut 3" pieces of 3/8" doweling and shove one end into a pocket hole. Cut off the excess and I have a ready-made plug for the next hole. It took me a few tries to get the hang of the flush cut saw, but nothing a little sanding couldn't take care of. Once painted, it is very difficult to see the plugs.
