I had a long talk with my daughters about bullying after my sister who lives with us quit her job due to being bullied by a grown woman in her 60s. I told my girls that bullies can come in people of all kinds and sadly all ages. It was 2nd time she'd been bullied at her employer the first time was a woman who'd bullied her in school and obviously hadn't grown up like most school bullies

Hi Michelle. I just wanted to say that I find your videos very inspiring. I have been teaching for 11 years and after a difficult class last year, I felt like I had lost my passion for teaching. Watching your videos, and having a much nicer class, I have fell in love with teaching again - thank you. I lead reading in my primary school (UK) and you keep mentioning Reading Olympics which sounds a great way to promote reading for pleasure. What is reading Olympics? Keep doing the fantastic job that you are. Vicky x

I’ve been teaching for 19 years and I have a suggestion: Every once in a while go tech free for a whole day. We get so used to all this wonderful technology at our fingertips: slides, videos, apps...that it really does help build our skills as educators to think outside the box, and discover of new ways to reach our kids to drop it all occasionally.
@kimryden
@kimryden 6 жыл бұрын
I would say that she does use a variety of ways to reach her students. Her slides are how she organizes her day, just like a paper planner. From what she presents here, she is not using techology for everything. She uses manipulatives and games...books and experiements. I think her classroom is a great mix. Technology is a tool that we can abuse or we can use to enhance the experience in our classrooms. These kids are growing up in an age where they will have to use technology in a lot of areas in all of their future jobs!
@uptownflavor

Also, some districts want teachers to include tech in their lessons. I don't find her to be overly dependent on tech. There have been days when her tech wasn't working and she was able to adjust.

I recently completed my undergraduate degree in Primary Education (I can teach Years/Grade 1-6) and throughout my degree I'd watch your videos. You're a very inspiring person, you really have a buzz that's contagious. Watching you I just want to reorganise and be productive, you also make me see why I think it was good that I left teaching. For me, seeing you so busy.. the youtube, your TPT store, the lesson plans, the resources, the teaching... you're constantly switched on, I don't know when you have down time... or even if you manage it. I remember you saying you love being busy, but what I learnt is that whilst I love teaching children, I cannot be a teacher. To be a teacher means to sacrifice, which is why I think you're incredible. Michelle, I truly don't know HOW you do it all. That also goes to every teacher in the comments - an absolute inspiration, I wish I could shake everyone's hand. Michelle you are always so happy, energetic, enthusiastic - even though I don't teach anymore, you're still a major role model that I aspire to become.

In my old county, I had four unannounced formal observations every year. I have had both structures... announced and unannounced. There are advantages and disadvantages of each. With an announced formal observation, you have to write a very in-depth lesson plan (meaning 6-7 pages for a single lesson) whereas that is usually not required for an unannounced observation. The expectations are usually higher for an announced observation as well.

I once had a parent threaten me by saying they were going to call the school board. The principal just looked at me and said "If they DO call, the school board will talk to me and they'll see that you've done everything right. There's nothing you have to worry about.". They never actually called. That was my first year of teaching. As long as you're doing things the way you are supposed to, there's no way they can hold a case against you. However, these parents did get escorts any time they were on campus and the principal told me that I was not to be in the same room with them based on their behavior. My current school does not allow unaccompanied parents to walk in the school unless they are registered volunteers. Such crazy times we live in!

Personally i like to use strengths and limitations rather than weaknesses, to be limited has less negative psychological connotations than to be weak, also limits are there to be worked on and raised and that seems more achievable than to take a weakness and turn it into a strength. I teach psychology and words are very important psychologically speaking, but i do feel it just gives something easier to work toward achieving than tackling a weakness. That said this is what I love about being a teacher, everyone comes at it from their own perspective and makes it their own, love that freedom it gives to be the kind of teacher you want to be xx

@@tinagood640 This is the problem with people jumping on people in the comments section, i was just explaining what i use, this was in no way me having a go at Michelle at all!! Teachers share their methods with each other and she didn't mention the word limitations - i shared it because maybe others would like alternatives to use and because i myself really like using this - i watch Michelle to learn and to grow as a teacher and to share my practice. I rarely do it because people like you who think they are clever with their comments jump on others, what is sad is that people are not allowed to have a say or an opinion on here if it goes against Michelle and this wasn't against her this was just another opinion... I was excited to share it till you weighed in with your nastiness - thanks for ruining it for me and making me want to just not bother AGAIN!!

Also, an addition to Stand up- Hand up- Pair up; you can do timed-pair-share. This allows for both students to have equal opportunities to discuss. You can add a timer on the board for however long you would like. If partner a is done discussing before the time is up, partner b should ask questions to keep the discussion going. Vice versa for partner b.

Yes... there are tons of ways to have students share. I opted to use stand up, hand up due to the fact that my students need to have opportunities for movement in order to stay engaged in the lesson.

Kind of random, but what were those foam puzzle pieces that came with the stage in the box? 😂

They are normally used as floors for places babies or kids play to have a soft place to play. They probably included them to help cushion the box.

This isn’t a very good description but basically if the kids have good behavior they can get rewarded with a cub kudo (which I don’t know what they do with, maybe it goes in a drawing for something?)
