POCO "The Induction" 2015 (Furay, Young, Schmit, Cotton, Grantham)

Compilation. Short film of the Induction of Poco in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. Inducted by Jim Mason (co-producer of A Good Feelin' To Know, 1972), Richie Furay, Rusty Young, Timothy B. Schmit and Paul Cotton, backed up by the Richie Furay Band perform 7 Poco classics for a sold out venue that blew the roof off the beautiful venue in Denver, Colorado on january 9th in the year 2015.
Also inducted were Firefall and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was a magical night.

Poco was part of a truly Golden Era of music. West Coast Country Rock scene (Byrds, Poco, Buffalo Springfield, Moby Grape, CSNY, Eagles on and on) were as impactful as The Beatles or Elvis or Motown. Yes all good music there. I learned guitar back in the mid '60s from Timothy's Dad. One of my first songs I learned was Green Eyed Woman by the New Breed. Schmit's band. He forced me to learn the bass line too.

I'm with you Rita, just wrote a blip on another video how my whole life i crushed out on Timothy Schmidt, such a beautiful man, voice & talented to no end, as they all were. But there is something when he sings the high end on Rose and also Crazy Love. Watch Spiderhead movie, they play Crazy Love perfectly suits the end of this wild & great red pill movie. I was a lucky 18 kid when the original POCO hit the sunset strip seeing them several times with Meissner and Messina. It was ELECTRIC to say the least in those tiny clubs whose names have passed into oblivion. Great bunch of guys with a groundbreaking sound and flawless delivery. Good feeling to this day. As a fan of Buffalo Springfield, I bought the first Poco Album (Pickin' Up The Pieces ) the moment I saw it in 1969. 53 years later, they are arguably the most underrated country rock band ever. They should be acknowledged musical innovators as well. There weren't a lot of people listening to Poco in 1969. CSY and the Eagles should bow down to these guys every night for making them rich!

It is my hope that the youth of today will keep Poco alive. Their importance in the progression of American music in which they seamlessly blended country, folk, and rock in such a wonderful genre is hard to understate. Personally I put them above The Byrds which is high praise indeed, and I absolutely love The Byrds. RIP Rusty and Paul, you guys truly carried the water no matter what the changing winds of the music business wrought. I love all you guys and still take tremendous pleasure in listening to your rich musical legacy. And Ritchie you are a true American Iconic legend in my estimation.

I found you (Poco) in 1970 Highland, CA (Picken' Up the Pieces) when I was 17, and I never stopped following your personalities and legendary music. I bought, and still have every album and CD produced. Even though time has marched on and I now listen on Spotify, the feeling is still the same. I saw Poco in Chico Stae University. In about 1971...i was not really country music fan.but they put on a great show.Very.well recived to a great audience of college students.Littlt did i know i was witnessing the birth of country rock....soon to held regarded by the Eagles.Poco was the first to establish this genre of music.So sad to see they did not the high aclaim they deserved.May the go to live fruitful loves.Bravo Poco..Ritchie Furay...Bravo.

When I moved to Virginia in 74, the first concert I saw was Poco, Charlie Daniels Band, and Marshall Tucker. To this day, the best concert I ever went to. I was front row center maybe 25 feet right in front of Timothy Schmit. Then Charlie D. Then Doug Gray. I remember it like it was yesterday. The biggest WOW hands down was watching Rusty Young. He was very animated and made great facial expressions. You could just tell he was having a ball up there.

What a night!! Wish I could have been there just to see Paul do that guitar interlude in Rose of Cimarron. I've watched that so often (once I discovered it here a while ago!) And who cannot but love Richie. I just have to look at him and I'm grinning, bless him. Saw this great interview with him and laughed 'til my eyes watered. He is so precious, so unpretentious. They are all so down to earth, no ego issues. Guess Timothy saw a more profitable future with the Eagles, but I don't know why Randy left. Randy did have a habit of leaving -- Poco, Stone Canyon Band with Rick Nelson, the Eagles. Sad for all his fans. Let's just get these guys into the rock and roll Hall of Fame. It would be criminal if they are not inducted and the sooner the better.

Re: Randy leaving Poco: apparently a conflict over who got to be in the control room during mixing/mixdown. Richie--who was rather controlling at that age--and Jim Messina--who WAS a producer--excluded Randy. By all accounts, Randy is a very easygoing guy. In another interview I just watched here on KZbin, Messina left for about the same reason: Richie was getting frustrated at missing the successes others had (Stills, Young, Schmit), and Messina--who had just gotten married and had producer roots--felt the tension and felt he could just stay in LA and work. I take solace in knowing that all these great guys have gotten together since...able to bury the hatchet..and came together for that one album, too.

Saw Poco in 1972 and 1973 in St. Louis. Then in October 2015 Rusty, Paul and Richie got together and played the Wildwood Lodge in Steelville, Missouri in a very intimate setting, couches and big chairs. They could not have been nicer to the crowd. They stood around and talked with everyone and signed anything you had. In January that same year, 2015, I saw Paul with his local band at the Schooner's Wharf in Key West. Another great night of music... Sadly Rusty and Paul have left us.

Rusty finest ever on Pedal Steel guitar, Timothy unbelievable vocals and Paul Cotton wrote sang and played some of the best rock Gretsch guitar ever. Furay was a perfectionist, Messina had already wrote and produced his first two albums, was ready for new direction after a falling out in the studio. Seems they still can’t get it together. Saw Poco Live at The Warehouse in New Orleans back in the day. They were followed by the band Spirit. Poco livened up the place and had to do a few encores. Happily so. Spirit was awesome too. 69 and playing open mics up New England way in these times. Hopefully this pandemic will pass where we can mingle again. watching a lot of youtube these days and nights. Music is a saving grace. And I'm not even any religious domination believing son of a gunner.

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Cotton and talking with him on two separate occasions around 2001 or so. We spoke about harmonies, a favorite subject of mine. We got to talking about the highest of the high harmonies by George Grantham and Paul said they called him The Razor because of his sharp high harmonies. Rest In Peace, Razor.

One of my favourite bands from the 70's (after the Byrds). Too rock for country and too country for rock, but hey who cares, they were original. I have their dvd from the Bellcourt Theatre, absolutely brilliant, with Magnolia, Heart of the Night and Bad Weather the highlights. Shame Young decided he was too big for the band in later years.
