Re: The Poppy T-Shirt - based on the construction, I’m certain it would be classified as a “classic shoulder” construction. Julie Hoover, Cocoknits and a few others utilize the construction method. It’s kind of hard to find patterns that utilize it because it’s referred to as “English tailoring”, “French shoulder”, “Italian shoulder”, “Japanese shoulder“, etc depending on who is writing the pattern. However, the technique comes from RTW and “classic shoulder” is the true name. With that said, I found there are some knitting(machine and hand) design books from the 80s that give instructions on how to draft them. Searching “fully fashioned classic shoulder” will provide additional information.

Several Ankestrick patterns (see ravelry) use this method of creating the set in sleeve. I'm older, we used a seamed version this method almost exclusively when I learned to knit. The fit is precise because you can angle sleeve increases before flattening them out to fit under the arm. Both shoulder width and upper bust measurements can be adjusted for a slimmer garment.

Ok, I found out where to comment! I love your podcasts because they stay on topic and you seem well-informed. Your projects look fantastic too. I usually just lurk and don't interact but I wanted to bring up some information on the Poppy tee. First of all, I am a fan of Mojave yarn. I love the stuff, it's so soft for a cotton-linen blend AND it machine washes/dries. The shoulder line Petite Knit uses looks like the tailoring method Julie Wiesenburger (hope it's spelled correctly) uses in her top-down sweaters for CocoKnits patterns. At first, I thought it was contiguous style, but the more I looked at it, I think it resembles what a CocoKnits top-down looks like. I have her book but haven't really tried any patterns out yet, but I love her style. And, I think Petite Knit uses that shoulder line in another pattern, with stripes, can't think of the name right now but it is a heavier gauge like 18 -20 stitches per 4 " or 10 cm. I love your new projects! That Mojave Poppy tee will be amazing to wear in upcoming summer. 😍 I have to disagree with the commenters before me in that the construction of the t-shirt might have the sleeve knit-as-you-go but the construction is called English tailoring. The main difference between contiguous and this one is that the shoulder seam sits in the back of your shoulder whereas in contiguous it‘s on top like a traditional shoulder seam. The part where she takes from the contiguous method is that you knit the sleeve at the same time. I know I‘m knit-picky with that but I got quite into construction methods when I started designing and this is one of my favourite methods to produce drop shoulders as well as fully tailored sweaters, although I usually opt for top-down knit-in sleeves for a better fit. Cocoknits has a book about that technique and a lot of Ysolda‘s patterns feature English tailoring. Thanks for sharing your projects with us, it‘s always a joy to see somebody new being so enthusiastic about their WIPs and finished objects. 💌

Something that I have done to get my hands on nice fibers like cashmere for cheap is if you are out thrifting to look at the fiber content of the sweaters. I got super lucky and found a 100% cashmere sweater from Ann Taylor for $15. Plus it was a fun little project to unravel the sweater, wash the yarn, and hank it up 😊

You can add short rows just right after the lace pattern. I've done it with my Kudzu cardigan, which is a free pattern in Ravelry so you can check this out, it turned out really nicely😊 Also there is a wedge short row shaping in the Flax pullover (free pattern from tincanknits) also in the Flax light, so you can adjust it according to your yarn weight. Hi Amy, I am making a tee using The Cocoknits Method. It’s almost identical to the poppy tee. I decided to pick up stitches and do an I-cord bind off. (I knit one round after the pick up.) It looks great! I wanted to keep the look that was already In place. Just like yours with the nice rounded neckline. Just a thought for you. I do love your pocket idea!

i've crocheted a plaid wrap that is constructed in a similar manner....to help with the weaving i found a really cool long weaving needle that has a ball-point tip (i have no idea what it is called...i wish i could remember!) but it made the weaving go so much more quickly since the rounded tip prevented splitting the stitches or yarn!

I love the whitmoor cardigan! So beautiful in that color. Also i was full on grinning when you were mentioning the field day cardi, and talking about the fishermans rib and saying how much work it is, cause im working on my Stria cardigan by Andrea Mowry and thats half fishermans rib on 2.75mm. Your poppy tee is looking great - love the color! The contiguous set-in sleeve is super popular in Isabell Kraemer's patterns (she's a very prolific designer). She attributes the method to Susie Myers & teaches classes on the method. I usually knit raglans, but tried it and you can get an even better fit, which I think is supposed to be one of the benefits. I'm currently knitting another set-in sleeve pattern: the Seedling Tee by Celine Feyten.

I believe that the Poppy Tee is knitted using a contiguous sleeve, which mimics set in sleeves (or can mimic them), but doesn't involve seaming. My understanding is that set in sleeves do require seaming...

I am making the Lyon sweater right now (released just after the poppy tee i believe) and it's the exact same shoulder construction ! I have made the Whitmoor pullover (not the cardigan). If they are similar enough, the point at which the lace pattern ends is so far down the back that any short row will only make it longer on the back towards the bottom rather than pushing it up. (Plus it will open up a bit after you block it, so if you really want to try it, block it right before the stockinette part to see where it ends up on the back) There is a Knitflix and chill episode that talks about short rows if you want to understand them better.

❤ LOVING LOVING LOVING ur poppy tee. The color is beautiful 😍. I think it would look great in black for a classic staple tee. Mmmmmm. U said u have worked with caboo before I think. I was wondering how it fits after blocking. I know cotton sometimes shrinks ( just by dishcloths iv crocheted) but the addition of the bamboo makes me wonder if maybe it doesn't shrink as bad. Does anyone know?

I've made a tank with coboo and I didn't have any shrinkage. It blocks really nicely and the fabric is really comfortable to wear!

Lots of Rowan patterns are "set in sleeves" .They are knitted in pieces usually an they are better fit than the knitted in the round. I am knitting the Cumulus Tee and trying Truboo yarn. The yarn is awful, splits and too slippery but I'm determined to finish it 🤷‍♀
