Show Description:
Human mental health is infinitely complex. We all battle in different ways, we all struggle, and we all need to learn how to cope, process, feel and experience life’s ups and downs. The fundamental way we do this is by listening to the signals our brain and body send us, like anxiety and depression, and getting to the root of what these mental and physical symptoms are telling us about the imbalance in our life.
In this podcast I speak with holistic board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist and yoga teacher Dr. Ellen Vora about how it is possible to learn to understand and manage our mental health by embracing these signals and listening to what they have to say, how facing the root of our fears and anxiety helps us find true healing, what a functional medicine approach to mental health looks like, why the current system of mental healthcare needs to change, the relationship between psychotropic medication, withdrawal and mental health, and more!

Ive been on psyhch meds for 30 years, I was also a crack addict, clean for 19 years. I have been tapering off all psych meds since Oct 2018. I have one more left. It was harder, more tortorous than getting off of crack cocaine. My brain went flatline for many months, lost all imagination, memory, my brain was literally empty. I had to isolate in my home because I either yelled or cried, I was the worst version of myself. God led me to taper and He stayed by my side the entire time. I needed them at a time, but now that I am almost finished tapering and my brain is rebooting, I have never been better, more able to process my thoughts and trauma. Thank you for educating us to both of you amazing Drs,

This was an incredible incredible incredible discussion-I’ve had actual physical response while listening , almost like sparks being lit all over my body! I was surprised to read so many negative responses. I think the issue is that the concepts you are both reconceptualising are way way ahead of it’s time. I believe a whole generation are in need of mind- body healing. It is SO real. By no means does this invalidate any condition (I understand how real it is as I have been stuck on a hamster wheel of depression for over 10 years and I’m only 29). But we have no clue how to manage our minds so we swing between medicating people, or being judgemental and tell them to be “strong”. When someone gets into a car accident and is paralysed, we spend ALL our resources nurturing their body, taking them to physio, cleaning up their nutrition just to get even a glimmer of being able to walk again. But when someone gets hit by the bus of life over and over again- we expect to it cry out for 1 night, eat ice cream and still be sane? It doesn’t add up. It will take awareness, understanding, research, and most of all time. I look forward to all the great things to come.

I was on SNRI antidepressants for a decade, Duloxetine. When I went off them, I went through hell for over a year. Seizures, neurological disturbances, extreme pain and anxiety. Medication does not treat the underlying condition. I'm so glad I discovered Dr Caroline Leaf. I find so much truth in her work through my own human condition and journey.

I’m so grateful to listen to you both. Thank you. I’m one who spent years recovering from extreme childhood traumatic abuse. Then was sent to live in a parochial academy for HS years. Then married a military man who was as messed up mentally from childhood as I was. Time went with three children and then getting a RN License. Another dysfunctional marriage. An adult son who the Military Psychiatrists determined I was the one to help this Marine son who I adored, I was the one to help guide him and give him a safe home. Well I lost myself snd my Primary Dr proscribed Zoloft. No counseling. Divorced again-third time. This son was in extreme mental suffering and ended in prison fir DUII. I was in Counseling. Went on a tour of Brazil. Decided to go cold off Zoloft after five years on while on that tour. I had tremendous head pain and lightning cracks. I managed. My Counselor wanted me back on. I did and suffered blisters all over my body and nearly ended in the Burn Center. I knew my mind was tortured and I began attending Science of Mind Church. It’s been a slow slow recovery. But I’m in. I’m healthy and happy and retired. Got my UG in Art and Design with Studio Focus. I have 40 ac of commercial trees. I’m 79 and folks think I’m in mid 60s. Life is beautiful and plan on listening to you both as well as Science and non Evangelical Spirituals. I use plants for medicine and supplements on a healthy diet. I use a touch of THC with CBN for deep sleep. I live where that is legal. My last wish is to find a teacher to lead me through the mushroom experience. 😁👩🏻‍🦳🌺💕my partner is encouraging with my lifestyle and he’s on his own journey. The reason I choose to be a mental health therapist instead of a psychiatrist is because of the problems the doctor was describing in the video. A doctor’s focus is going to be on a person’s biology and physical health not the other aspects of the person’s health. A therapist will discuss the other aspects of a person’s health like relationships, sleep habits, negative thinking patterns etc.

Will never forget....after being cooped up for months in winter, I started going outside everyday over the course of a week I suddenly started having what felt like horrible allergies and insomnia...but being told by the Dr. that I was depressed and needed meds...really in a week, I suddenly developed depression? His next guess was rheumatoid arthritis, because I said my muscles ached and he could give me a med for that...oh for a pill to fix it all..No, I never found out the problem...when I moved almost everything went away.

Amazing video and great awareness of these toxic medications. I'm in a process of tarping off SNRI and wish I never got my hands on it and trusting the doctors to know what they are prescribing. No warning whatsoever on what will happen once you are coming off. Suffering from medication tapering is real and extremely difficult. Whoever is reading this please do your research before ever taking them. (SSRI/SRNI) Thank God I'm only dealing with one medication but there are so many others out there in worst situations than I am and my heart goes out to you all.

Mental health therapists are trained to provide therapy to deal with the psychological and spiritual elements of a person. A psychiatrist, which is a type of medical doctor, is trained to solely focus on the physical health of a person. That is why they prescribe medication. I am a mental health therapist.

Witches were demonised . They were just women and some men who worked with natural medicines, herbs etc. They were midwifes and healers of all kinds. They were a threat to those in power and were slandered as being linked to Satan. It was a horrendous witch hunt to drive people of the land. It led to the enclosures and more and more land and power in fewer hands. They are demonising complimentary therapists again because they are a threat to the pharmaceutical companies’ profits.

I’ve put a lot of thought in to this. And I’ve come to conclusion that our mind is our greatest gift but also the cause of our suffering. Being awaken to this world that is hash and cruel. Salomon said it in the book of Ecclesiastes.. “ the futility of life”.. deep down in our subconscious we are confronted with death and meaningless reality. And that understanding of it causes anxiety and depression and sickness. I always think of Genesis. It’s a curse which we must bear. Adam and Eve ate some forbidden thing and our eyes where open to know death. This cause suffering. We where never meat to be this awake. So now we ask our self the question why? and this constant seeking to find meaning and peace within.. it’s a constant battle that has no end. And honestly that answer is not gonna be found here in this world. I believe that is why Christ came. He understood this clearly. The way to life is Jesus in the resurrection. That’s the way I see it.

Being still reduces negative thoughts. Feel the stillness flow within you. Make it a daily habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Mental health therapists are already doing this. Therapists are trained to deal with the psychological and spiritual aspects of a person. Psychiatrists, a type of medical doctor is trained to solely deal with the physical health. They prescribe psychiatric medicine and do not do therapy. To receive therapy you have to see a mental health therapist not a psychiatrist.

Powerful questions raised: What are your sleep habits? How is your diet & digestion? Relationships? Job? Are you disenfranchised or marginalised? Do you have a locus of control or autonomy in your work? Do you have a connection to purpose and meaning? When we begin a dialogue, we should show up as a beginner.

I came here to try & understand what's happening to me, to my mind...& this has given me some kind of clarity, though the only time I experience mind chatter, is when it's extreme, it's almost constant, during/after a state of quite deep depression. The first time it happened many years ago, it frightened me as I couldn't switch off from it, it was a constant dialog of chatter, like commentary. Through my depression, I realised that I had nothing else to think about, as i'd lost interest in almost everything & life felt very uneventful, very boring. I'd lost interest in all the things I previously found interesting, exciting & worthy. After alot of stresses in life this past 2 years, i've unfortunately gone back into a depression & the same feelings, plus recently this mind chatter, which at times i've found very dibilatating. Luckily, as much as I don't like it, theres only been a few times were it's overwhelmed me, which has made me panic. In my first episode of it many years ago, it was so constant that I had to play loud music much of the time, to drown it out. I'm hoping that, as I come out of my depression & I gain back interests in things, in life...it will again subside. My understanding is that it comes on with me, when my mind is empty of thought, of what is usually my interests, yes even washing up & daily tasks. I call it an empty head & mind, that requires something to do...so it chats, mind chatter. I hope that this is understood to the professionals here & maybe helps others. Thank you & all the best to all.

i didn't listen to the who thing but my understanding is that Dr.Leaf is a Christian, and I'm guessing the guest is too. My confusion is this : how does a Christian endorse an accupuncturist (spelling awful) and yoga instructor? I soooooo crave hearing from Christian practictioners who don't stray into Eastern religions. I say this not to be a jerk but because I HONESTLY really struggle with the stress of one truth colliding with a half truth. But I do enjoy listening in on this! And I certainly admire Dr. Leaf's body of work and her brave evangelism. Kudos to any Christian, actually. But why isn't Christ enough?

@@vickeysteffin8061 witches were just the early medical herbalists. They did not practice evil. That was demonisation by those who wanted to grab land and accumulate power. They were midwives and healers, doing good not harm. Christ would never have sanctioned such a massacre of those women. I, too, was shocked to see Dr. Leaf with this woman who seems very nice but is practicing witchcraft, yoga, and reiki... all occult practices. The Lord is very clear on what He thinks of witchcraft and those who practice it. I was in the occult/new age movement for almost 20 years and went through training for Reiki but have since renounced all of my occult activity. Thank you for your amazing Grace Father God!!! I pray for both of these wonderful women and ask you to bless them. God is good all the time... ♥️

@@breakthroughnow7841 Christ is love not witch-hunts and massacres of innocent nature practitioners. Witch craft is just working with nature . It has nothing to do with devil worshipping. That was a twisted fantasy of patriarchal power hungry men projected onto healers and midwives. Natural medicines are being demonised again because they interfere with pharmaceutical profits. It is frightening how far from Christ’s teaching of love, patriarchal religion has strayed.

@miragaiamaia8966
@miragaiamaia8966 3 жыл бұрын
every med is different from the other, but from what i understood, cutting the dose to halph is a bigger step than what it should be. the dose needs to be reduced gradually, not by halph, beeing halph a pill or alternative days. this is because your body needs more time to adjust to the new chemestry, to create new circuits and find a new ballance. they said it could takemonths, a year or more to quit the meds, it all deppends on each one's reaction. allways talk to your doctor about it and share with them what you feel and think in the process. the thing is, the majority of the doctors are "tired" or pressured by the farmaceuticals to keep people on meds, so choose your doctor wisely.

@@miragaiamaia8966 It took six years to get my daughter of a relatively low dose of Risperidone. Partly this was because there was so much resistance from psychiatrists so we had to do it really gradually so they didn’t have an excuse to put her on a higher dose if she got distressed in public. She did it! Off all of it. We reduced once a week by a small amount for a while and then twice a week so 5 milligrams to 4 and a half once a week for a few weeks and so on. She’s been off it for two years. We had such a struggle with mental health professionals for decades but now she has a really understanding social worker who we could be honest with. Good luck . Trust your wisdom and go at your own pace with patience. It’s worth taking all the time you need so you can stay off the drugs unless there is a safe space where you can go more quickly.
