My dog, Bogie, was a rescue. He was 2 years old when we got him and he had been abused and witnessed his mother's death. He was scared of everything, especially men. I live in a college town and so I took him for walks around campus so that he could get comfortable seeing people. My grandpa would come over and take care of him so that he could adjust to men being near him. Now he's 3 and 1/2 and he's doing so well. He's very happy, he can walk through campus so easily, sometimes he even approaches people on his own. He loves my grandpa like crazy. His recovery makes me cry. He's so calm now and he loves going for walks around town. Congratulations on Bunny. Her being with you guys makes me so happy. Know that she does love you already, she can sense a stable home. She's just being cautious. (That's how it was with my little anxiety ridden Bogie)

I was an idiot 18-year-old who moved out and immediately rescued a dog of my own and it was one of the hardest things I ever voluntarily put myself through. It continued to be hard, too! Going to college, finding apartments that allow dogs, roommates that are respectful, the whole deal. It's six years later now, and that bond between me and my dog, Mary, is absolutely unbreakable. We've been through multiple apartments, jobs, boyfriends. Mary was homeless and pregnant when the shelter found her, and it has become apparent that she 100% knows that I rescued her. The love between a rescue dog and their (rescue) human is somethin else. Sending all my good rescue journey vibes to you all.

Definitely recommend an item with “nervous”, “do not pet” or “training” on it. I purchased a “do not pet” harness for my rescue Pomeranian. It stops about 75% of people but you will still have the ones that don’t bother reading and just run over and try to pet or yell that their dog is friendly. Each time that happens, I take it as an opportunity to educate them on rescue animals and the type of situation they come from and how important it is to read cues and harnesses/vests. You guys are amazing and will succeed as you already have Bunny’s best interest in heart.

I’m a volunteer with a greyhound adoption group near me, and currently have 2 of my own. We always teach that it takes rescues and retired racers about 6 months to become fully comfortable and acclimated in their new home. Of course every grey is different, some go faster and some slower, but 6 months is usually a safe timeframe. Our female was a resource guarder, and we have small children (they were 5 and 2 when we first brought her home). It was scary, because we didn’t want anyone to get hurt. It took a lot of effort, but she stopped that behavior entirely by 3 months- which is fairly quick! There is a light at the end of the tunnel, she will get there. 😊 Also, I always tell people if you want to feel famous, walk a greyhound out in public. Many have never seen one up close and they’re such a beautiful, recognizable breed. Everyone loves to stop and ask about them. 😁
@JennaMarbles5 жыл бұрын
Morgan Stafford thank you for this!! Seriously this makes me feel a lot better. She has shown a lot of improvement with resource guarding from us because she is starting to trust us from her basic training. We still don’t know what would happen with the other dogs yet but a 6 month time frame makes me feel like she’s going at a really great pace. She still has to learn the pack dynamic which I think is coming, they are all starting to interact more as she gets more curious and open with them and gets over some of her fears of just being in the house. Some times I feel bad that she can’t just run around and be a dog, that there are other dogs here that she needs to learn how to respect and live with, but that it really hasn’t even been that long and we can just take everything slow. Thank you for writing I really appreciate it.

A lot of people don't realise what a difficult life blood donor greyhounds have. They live in a crate for roughly 23 hours a day, essentially you have a big dog isolated in a cage that is only big enough to stand and lie down in. Human interaction is low, dog interaction is lower. It's not just that they have never seen anything much in their lives, but you are dealing with a dog that is dissociated, depressed, and shut down - which is what happens when you spend your life basically in jail. These greys don't learn how to interact with other dogs or humans, so they lack both types of social cues. They don't develop relationships, everything is temporary in their lives, and it takes them a long time to even see humans as a positive thing, let alone developing a notion of pack or family. As an aside, you can buy leads, collars, and vests that warn other dog owners not to approach when you're walking Bunny.
@dennistmennace5 жыл бұрын
I honestly had no idea that was even a thing before Jenna got Bunny, but to hear that is literally the saddest thing. About a year and a half ago, my boyfriend and I found a very old chihuahua walking around Van Nuys. No one claimed him, so I ended up keeping him and introducing him to my very protective and hyperactive younger rescue. Gizmo (our chi) went through a grieving period when I rescued him - maybe grieving his old life & family (we think he was abandoned) or the neglect that it was clear he received. I remember crying all the time at the smallest things like when I realized he didn’t know what a dog toy was. And then I cried at the bigger things - he couldn’t gain weight, he was going blind & deaf, he had all his teeth removed and to him, I was just was a stranger who had to medicate him 7x a day and get him to eat the best I could. For several months we didn’t know if he would survive the neglect. He hid from me for a long time and it took months until I saw him wag his tail but when he did, I remember I cried so many happy tears. Gizmo has become an extremely loving boy who enjoys burrowing far underneath blankets and following you around the house by feeling your walking vibrations. He still has anxiety attacks nearly every day but he is never going to be alone another day in his life. Bunny is just the same - forever and always now she is going to be loved by her two doggie parents and at the end of those hard days with her, please remind yourselves of that! Rescuing an animal is a very special blessing for parent and pet. You two are doing a wonderful thing!

yeah my pup is great with people but she’s had some really bad experiences with dogs and gets kinda aggressive if she sees dogs, she’s just generally reactive, but like when i see people walking they’re dogs off leash it’s like “cool, glad they’re well trained, but my dog is huge and she will eat yours like an appetizer” and people just have to understand that she’s trying to get over it but she’ll never not be totally comfortable.
@robinlovesrain5 жыл бұрын
This is why I literally always ask "can they say hi?" before letting my dog approach another dog on walks. My dog loves other dogs, but it still baffles me when people let their dogs run up to him without asking. Like they have no idea how he's going to react to my dog.
@EvieShayyy5 жыл бұрын
It’s the worst! I used to work at shelters so I have such a soft spot for dog aggressive dogs because it’s takes so long for them to get adopted. And it’s so frustrating because people don’t think about that, if a dog aggressive dog is leashed and the owner is doing everything right and an off leash dog runs up to it unsupervised and the aggressive dog attack’s... that dog could get quarantined or confiscated for someone else’s negligence! People are so wrapped up in their own world they forget to think of the 1000 other scenarios their actions affect.

I think it's super important that you guys touched upon the leash laws because you're absolutely right! Omg yes. My parents adopted a highly dog-aggressive dog (Max) and have been working with him and a professional trainer in leashed parks to try and break this behavior. Multiple times there have been off leash dogs come running up to him to try and play and their owners just play it off since their dogs are friendly but they have no idea what situation they are putting Max and their own dog in. It's ridiculous. We've had to yell at people to come get their dogs. Max WILL bite your dog if she charges him. That's why we only go to leashed parks. Ugh, people are stupid and self centered.

When dummies with off leash dogs yell "he's friendly!" as their dog charges mine, I yell back "yeah mine isn't!" (even though they're both angels). It gets the owners scared, usually gets them to call their dog back, and hopefully teaches them how to be more responsible.
@ClassicalPianoisMyJam5 жыл бұрын
Danielle Purtell that’s genius! I think it’s fine for dogs to be off leash if they act the same as if they’re on. I.e. still next to their handler, full proof call back, and obviously, friendly to other dogs. And in an enclosed dog park would be ideal. My dog is always off leash but we have a huge backyard where she never leaves.
@annotherdemon82175 жыл бұрын
I did that too. But still some Idiots went "Ah let them play. They're just dogs" and proceeded to not call their dog back, even though my dog clearly wasn't into it. So I switched to yell "Yeah, but he has fleas" (he does not) Works all the time
@Libsterize5 жыл бұрын
I have a Pomeranian x chihuahua (tiny puppy) and have had dogs ‘play’ with him which is trampling and being too rough. Obviously the large dogs don’t mean it, but owners don’t seem to care and I’ve had to pick my dog up multiple times. I wonder if this technique will work for my little pup x

I have a tiny Maltese. I try really hard to tell people to keep their dog away from mine, because she’s 11, partially toothless and very nervous/scaredy around other dogs, but since she’s very very small (I suspect she was the runt of her litter) they just laugh it off and let their dog plaster mine, even if she keeps growling and backing out. It’s maddening, every time.

This is so heart warming! We adopted a senior cat over the summer who spent 10 years scared and mostly lived under a bed. Her previous owner wanted to kill her :( it is so stressful to get animals adjusted to know they don't need to be scared anymore. Marbles (the name of our kitty) has made so much progress 8 months later. For the longest time she wouldn't even sit by us. She would just sit by the front door watching us. Now she sits on my lap every single day! It makes my heart melt. Thank you so much for helping an abused animal ♥️

When I was about 8 we rescued a cocker spaniel puppy. It was my first dog and it was really hard cause he was abused by his previous owners a lot. They locked him in a room for days without food. They let their toddler hug him way too hard and she even once was hugging super hard and released him on the top of the stairs so he fell down and hurt himself. My moms friend was their neighbour and she took him from them once when he got in her house trying to find food. This people were so bad that they didnt even notice he was gone untill 4 days later!!!! It was a process with him cause he really hated children at first because of what happened to him and he was my first dog so I just wanted to pet him and love him but we were patient and eventually he realized I wasnt gonna hurt him. Only one years later he would literally sleep on my chest and I would kiss his face. He never liked hugs and growled softly to let you know he wasnt feeling it if someone insisted too much in trying to be super on top of him. We understood the type of love he liked and he understood he was safe with us. We had many adventures and he passed away this past years at 16 years. He was a happy dog and even tho it was hard Im so happy for the good life we gave him and he gave us! ❤

She wouldn’t leave the front gate for for the first few months she was so afraid of everything. If anyone new came to the house she would hide under the bed. She couldn’t climb stairs. She was afraid of the car. Now, she loves walks, she is so happy and curious. She’s learnt to sit (in her unique greyhound way), drop and roll. She will come and wait. She jumps in the car. She follows us everywhere. She still doesn’t like pats when she’s out on walks, but all our friends comment every time they come over that she’s getting more and more awesome every time.
