I was 11 during the Northridge quake. My father suffered a traumatic brain injury covering my younger sister and my mom fell over the railing of our second story home after a light fixture fell. My most vivid memory is our neighbor going home to home looking for injured and not stopping working to free my dad. The panic and running around contributed to the severity of my parents injuries because both were hit by unsecured falling debris. We were very lucky that our neighbors first instinct was to search for the injured because they were okay. My dad made a near full recovery after several years. My mom suffered only broken bones. I required 30 stitches in the bottoms of my feet and 22 stitches in my shoulder and back. My little sister who was 2 at the time was completely uninjured. Do not panic, do not run, do not try to grab anything. Pointing out how dangerous that panic was in that video is so important to me because it is true. It should be a public safety campaign to constantly remind people not to run and panic no matter where you are. Also, Mark Lowell is my personal fucking hero because he never stopped trying to get my dad out even when he seemed like a lost cause. The people who worked tirelessly to free, help, treat and generally save people shouldn't be overlooked when discussing the Northridge quake.

@@alyssajade4755 thanks, we were very lucky. 57 people died, 1,300 had serious or critical injuries and 10k people in general were injured that sought treatment. Often the non first responders who saved lives are forgotten. I know several people including myself who didn't see police or fire in our area for hours if not days. Do not panic prevents serious injuries. That is lesson #1 and should be repeated non stop forever in earthquake zones. #2 if there is a serious quake and you are uninjured please please help people because it does matter and believe me, help is not coming because the damage is so widespread and catastrophic. Northridge is mostly forgotten by now and I feel like many lessons are lost especially since a lot of people left California and new ones came in in the last 25 years so they just don't understand what it is going to be like.

@@jenniferpage53 i actually left California the day I turned 18 and haven't been back 100% because of my crippling fear of earthquakes. They really should film a psa commercial and just run it on tv daily until people hate it, but wont forget it. My mom was born and raised in California but never imagined what a "bad" earthquake would be like. Also, its good to remind people to donate blood. Thats the best thing you can do in an event with mass injuries even if you aren't near the area. I got blood and so did my dad and we were lucky because there was already a shortage at the time. Even if there is no emergency, donate, donate, donate. You never know when it might be you who needs it.

My mom works for the emergency management department for our county (hi from northern kentucky!) and I played the first part of this so she could hear about your go bag. You have no idea how excited she was the hear about it! Part of her job is trying to encourage preparedness for disasters and knows how few people often are (my parents have been the EMS field for years). She kept nodding her approval as Julien went through your list and wanted to tell you "You guys are so smart! Thank you!" A a few "go kit" suggestion from New Zealand here 🙋 (we have our fair share of earthquakes and these are drilled into us) - a way to warm up food such as a jetboil, small cooker etc with spare gas as often in an emergency warmth can be the most important thing (inside your body and out) - a head torch so you have your hands free - toilet paper - a LARGE container of sealed water (im talking several litres) stored somewhere else in case you cant access what you have - an emergency blanket (the ones that look like foil) - an emergency whistle - light sticks or glow stick - Hand santizers - dust masks Hope this was helpful to somebody! xx

They should add some first aid kit, too. Latex gloves (if you ever want to help somebody that’s hurt, put on gloves.) Soap, too. Keeping any wound clean is critical. And a big pot. Water filtering bottles are good but they get very dirty easily. So a pot to make food, or heat up some water to a boil to sterilize it. Cash is useless in an emergency situation. If everyone is out there you don’t want to « pay » them with paper. Buy silver, or gold. Add some big candles, too. And something to defend yourself. It’s scary, but you never know. Your very first needs are drinking and keeping warm. You should have 4L per person for basic needs. (Yeah, we are prepared, haha.)

Thought you guys might enjoy my earthquake story: I'm from Christchurch New Zealand and in February 2011 we had a shallow 6.3 earthquake. I happened to be in the shower, and like most people shower naked. I did manage hold myself in the shower until it finished and was lucky enough to only get a few bruises on my shoulders, elbows and on one hip. But anyway this next bit is where it gets good. The earthquake stops and I get out if the shower, I'm home alone and I'm scared out of my mind. I'm walking around my house crying when a large after shock happens. I immediately bolt out of my house into my backyard. Then I notice my neighbour walking up my driveway, hes the sweetest elderly man and is coming over to check on me. I then notice that I'm still naked and hes walking directly towards me. The only garden near me is rose bushes and daffodils, neither of these I can even attempt hide behind. He sees me and immediately turns his head away and looks at the ground and says "are you ok"? I say "yup just going inside" and literally run into my house. The sweetest thing is his wife came over 30minutes later to ask me over for tea and cake while I try to make contact my family who were all at work and school at the time. So that's my earthquake story, I never did make eye contact with my neighbour ever again 🤣

Something multi purpose to add would be a biolite campstove 2, biolite kettlepot, and biolite coffee press. The stove and press both can store inside the kettle pot, and the stove is fueled by anything that burns. The stove also generates electricity to charge the built in battery pack or other small devices. They also sell portable compact solar panels, and lightweighr lighting. I've used the the combo listed above camping and loved using it.

I remember my first earthquake vividly. It was a 4.7 on the richter scale, and the epicentre was about 80km away from me. This happened in 2009. I remember counting the seconds it lasted for - 14. My body was super stressed, I remember how hard my heart was beating and I remember the way the ground shuddered. I could hear the glass panes in the windows vibrating. It’s a strong memory for me. Since I live in Australia, our whole-ass country is on just one tectonic plate so we don’t get a lot of earthquakes; barely ever, actually. News reports from back then said it was the strongest felt in 36 years!

I can’t express how much I truly do love starting my day with these podcasts. Also, I struggle with overstimulation issues and get anxiety very easily. Even my favorite hobbies during these times are too much to handle. But one thing that always calms me down is this podcast. If there’s not a new one out I’ll just rewatch the old ones over and over. So thank you guys so much for using part of your time and energy to make these :)

It's fantastic you have a go-bag, and talking about it could inspire someone to put one together that could save their life. So thank you! I'd suggest adding some 550 cord and emergency blankets. Doesn't weigh much or take up a lot of space but massively important in a terrible situation. Also, beyond a basic first aid kit, a trauma kit doesn't take up much room and could be invaluable during a crisis when ambulances are stretched thin.

Mandy and Mom & Dad are both incredible Nick Cage movies for different reasons. Mandy is visually beautiful and he does a dope job in it. In Mom & Dad he screams the hokey pokey while destroying a pool table.
