As an actual scientist, I find it really sad that they both call themselves too dumb to understand the things they are talking about; they are both asking insightful questions and are analysing the hyptheses, they way one does in science. Find a cool observation, ask the right questions, form a hypothesis, test it, analyse, ask more questions. They are both obviously very smart, just because they don't have all the information about every specific topic doesn't mean they are stupid.

Thank you for this comment! That made me feel really valid. I wanted to pursue a career in the field of science but had to drop out of university due to my mental health. Now I have my own business as a Booksmith and I love it BUT every time I see/talk to someone who works in science or has a higher education than I do I feel kind of shitty because I would've loved to be more educated and be able to discuss things on a higher skill level. Sorry for the bad English btw

Love this. So many people discredit others based on their status, when like you pointed out curiosity and exploration are important. I think they most likely keep calling themselves dumb because they don't want angry internet mobs coming after them complaining that they're spreading misinformation or saying things wrong. You know how trolls are. It's unfortunate.

Ken I love Jenna and Julien and I enjoyed jokes they made and playful vibes and all but honestly I don't think this was a good choice for a podcast. I'm not trying to be mean (also English is not my first language so forgive me if my choice of words is not the best). I think most people don't understand science stuff and neither do Jenna or Julien. It was just awkward when Jenna read something and Julien had nothing to reply (which is fine because he is not a scientist) and he whould just say "ok" ,"got it" or try to make a joke about it. Or he would come up with questions and Jenna wouldn't be able to answer (which is totally fine too because she is not a scientist). When they don't understand the topic it's really hard to keep these type of conversations going. And it's hard to listen to. I stayed till the end though because I admire both of them and like them as human beings.

Hey, I have a degree in astrophysics and thought I should give some thoughts on these theories. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, especially seeing as this sort of thing is really fun to talk about and can be really great for getting people interested in astronomy and even prompting scientists to go looking in places they hadn't thought to before. Really though, it's so rad to hear you guys talking about space stuff on the pod! Always love listening to you guys and Jenna, you really did a great job from a science point of view here. There's a lot of veeeerry off the wall theories about space but for the most part there's lots of scientists who do like one or more of these theories, even if they aren't the most widely accepted explanations in every case. With that said, here's the most mainstream stances on these issues: Nemesis/Planet 9: The theory here is that there is what's called a "brown dwarf" on the edge of our solar system. These big bois blur the lines between a planet and a star. They aren't big enough to undergo the sustained nuclear fusion that powers a star but are so big that calling it a planet is a stretch. They do emit infrared radiation and can be hard to spot since they are so much dimmer than regular stars. It is thought that one so close to our solar system would be visible with our current technology though (the WISE space telescope looks at infrared light and hasn't spotted Nemesis for example). Questions from 6:17 The properties and different kinds of light is really well understood. If there is a brown dwarf this close to the solar system, we're really sure we'd be able to spot it. The caveat here is that you could evoke Dark Matter as an explanation, that is a whole other rabbit hole though and getting into it would take forever. The upshot is, you could possibly have a large object that doesn't emit any light at all but you are getting into the realms of science fiction with something like that. Dark Matter is for sure worth a google though. Brown Dwarves are typically about 1/80th the size of the sun. They're pretty cold! If Earth was orbiting a brown dwarf, we likely wouldn't even have an atmosphere as temperature would be so low, it would freeze. If a swarm of comets were hurled into the inner solar system by a large object, we wouldn't notice on the ground but we have telescopes that do keep an eye out for large objects that might be headed straight at us. There has been some talk about things we could do to redirect such an object and if you catch it early it's actually pretty easy to get them to miss us as even a tiny push will throw it off course. If there was a lot of them, it's unlikely we would be able to do anything but build underground shelters. A mass extinction like that would be super fast but not all of them are. For example, humans are currently thought to be the cause of a mass extinction event by hunting and destroying the ecosystems of many species over the last few thousand years. Julien actually nailed the pronunciation. Koy-per or Kyper belt both get used! Pluto may not be a planet but it's still dope and dwarf planets are the hot new shit to send probes to of late! The pictures from the New Horizons mission to Pluto are beautiful and the Dawn probe took some great shots of Ceres. The idea that there may be something really big lurking out in the outer solar system is not a settled issue though! A 9th planet, about 10-15 times more massive than Earth which is part of a class of planets called "super Earths" is the most likely candidate. These are rocky worlds, being much bigger than the likes of Mars or Earth but too small to become a gas giant like Jupiter or Saturn. This planet has been proposed to explain some of the weird orbits of comets in the outer reaches of our solar system. That bunched up group of comets suggests something big gravitationally attracting things way out past the orbit of Pluto but it's not been accepted by most thus far. More measurements needed though, watch the space! I agree though Jenna, it would be amazing if there was a brown dwarf was so nearby. We know very little about them and it'd be way more valuable to be able to go study a brown dwarf. MoooOOOOooon: This is for sure a plausible theory. Especially when you're talking about early in the Earth/moon's formation. There was almost certainly a ring of material when the thing that went on to become the moon crashed into earth. All the dust in that ring clumped together over time into bigger objects that clumped together to form the moon. At some point this probably led to a situation where there were many pieces of rock that eventually became onje. It's unlikely this was still happening during the Roman empire though. This is because of the Moon's crators actually. If there was a second MoooOOOooon about 2000 years ago, that got mushed together with the moon, it would have smoothed out the surface as such an impact would melt the surface of both objects and under the moon's gravity that lava would have cooled and solidified as a smooth surface. The craters on the Moon's surface are thought to be about 4 billion years old though (give or take). If I had to guess, I'd say those Roman's probably saw Venus which can appear really brightly in the night sky. Jenna is absolutely right in saying there is no (traditional) weather on the moon but Julien is kinda on to something with his sandcastle! Moons also stretch and heat the rocks of the bodies they are orbiting by what's called tidal forces. So called because the same forces are also applied to water on the Earth which causes the tides. So, if the Moon had a MooooOOOOooon, it could have some effect on what's going on inside the moon by heating it (same forces also heat the water on Enceladus and if there is water there, on Midas). 36:30 Nope moons can be made of anything in theory! The distribution of materials in the solar system tends to limit what moons can be made of but if something very strange happened and Earth had a moon that was entirely made of iron or something, we'd still call it a moon. A second moon would probably do very weird things to our weather but the effect would depend on the size of the object. Something significantly smaller than the moon is unlikely to be world ending (unless it were to crash into us or the moon itself which is not unlikely as three body systems like that can be unstable). If you could have a stable system where the moon had a MoooOOOooon, weather and the tides would probably just be stronger and more erratic. Somewhere like Venice would probably be screwed for the same reasons sea levels rising is screwing them right now. White Holes: These are unlikely to exist. As the wikipedia article says, Einstein's field equations "do predict" they exist, but the thing is, you can't always trust models when you push them to absolutely extremes. For example, Newton's laws of motion do a really great job at predicting how a baseball is thrown but struggle for objects moving close to the speed of light. We know Einstein's theory of General Relativity is not entirely accurate when you push things to the kind of extremes you get in the big bang aswell. The bottom line is, we haven't observed them. That doesn't mean they aren't possible but it's not thought to be likely. The same thing was said about black holes at first too though but just last year we directly imaged two of them with the Event-Horizon Telescope so we have been wrong about this before. Worm holes are also predicted by the same equations and are similarly thought to be "possible" but not likely to exist since they'd be so unstable and hard to make. For sure though, you are not stupid for feeling out of your depth with this stuff Jenna. I feel out of my depth trying to talk about them. Still though, I wanna do my best to answer Julien's question about the similarities and differences between a black and white hole: Both are really dense regions of space which means there is a lot of stuff there. With black holes, the gravitational pull of all that stuff is so great that the laws of the universe don't allow you to gain enough momentum to get back out of the event horizon once you go past it. With white holes, the opposite is true. They have a repulsive gravitational field which is spewing out material. This repulsive field is so strong that no matter how hard you try to ram into them, you can't get into the event horizon. The term "event horizon" literally just means, you've got a line where things on one side of the line cannot effect things on the other side of it. I.e. when you're in a black hole, you can't talk to the universe outside it. When you're outside of a white hole, you can't talk to the stuff inside it. Midas: I didn't know too much about this little guy! It's cute a one. I'd seen the death star pics but I wasn't aware we were so confused as to how that crater formed. I'll have to read into it a little but this all sounds pretty plausible!

I cannot believe that I have been been watching this woman since I was 11 years old. I use to sneak into the family room to use our desktop computer to watch Jenna videos because I wasn’t yet allowed on KZbin. Which looking back was probably a good call on my moms part lol. My mom did catch me one day and was very upset with me, but I BEGGED her to just watch what I was watching because I knew it was funny. It was the “When The Face Doesn’t Work” video. My mom DIED laughing and then after that I was allowed to use KZbin to watch Jenna. I’m now 20 years old and have never missed a single video since that day. When I watch the podcast it’s like I’m hanging with old friends. I don’t think I’ll ever be graced with the opportunity to speak with this woman in person, but if I were I’d tell her thank you. Thank you for years of laughs and for teaching me so much. She has truly been one of the only constants in my life. I’m so happy for her and everything she’s achieved.

local physics grad student here to answer questions: for julien: moons can be made of anything just like planets! the moons around jupiter and saturn have ice, volcanos, methane lakes, some wild ass shit. for jenna: when pluto became a dwarf planet, it was because the planet eris was discovered and it was bigger than pluto. because we started discovering these other small planets, astronomers realized we needed a new category for these objects that mostly orbit in the kuiper belt. so pluto didn't get kicked out of the planet fraternity, it joined its brothers and sisters in the keiper belt! also on moonitos: completely possible in terms of gravitational force. Consider that the earth is going around the sun and the moon is going around the earth so the moon is like a planetette. so it would be a similar concept. a cow could jump over the moooon and go mooo after it jumped over the moon :) love your videos and podcasts

I still remember in 9th grade, my crazy science teacher (loved her) told us that our black hole isn't active, but if it were to suddenly start "feeding" we wouldn't know until it already happened, and what we would see is the trees and tallest objects on Earth would start to stretch upward and break apart into millions of pieces until it reached it's single form, an atom. That scarred me for LIFE, but also completely sparked my fascination with black holes, lol.
