Best and most objective comparison of these two products. I had already decided on my board, but this review confirmed my decision in so many ways: how much my board would save me in external gear, recording limitations and post-processing time. Excellent review and thanks!!

I'm looking at this Zoom LiveTrak L-8 to use as a one man band set-up. Will it store my prerecorded songs sound levels on and so on and send them out through the Master outputs while I play live to them?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
IMHO you'll be a lot better off connecting an iPad to a mixer like the L-8. Put all of your backing tracks on the iPad and use the mixer to adjust the mix levels with microphone(s) and instruments. Here's a good article listing some live performance apps for the iPad: www.openmicuk.co.uk/advice/music-apps-for-singers-musicians/

Thanks for your review, you are spot on podcasting is a totally different animal. I was going to use my trusted Shure SM58 but just ordered a audio technica at2020 to get me started and now looking for a audio interface that will allow me to grow. The Rode seems more like what I would use. Have you seen Rode have these on sale?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
Dennis - The AT2020 is a good microphone, but personally I'd stick with a dynamic mic like the SM58 for podcasting unless you'll be recording in a sound treated environment. Dynamic mics in general suppress most of the annoying background noise that condenser mics tend to pick up. I have occasionally seen the RodeCaster on sale, but it's been rare.

I use the ZOOM. L-8. Doing music and podcast. All in one..why buy the rode if it cant do what the zoom does? Lol yes zoom looks harder to use but it has sooo much more to offer than Rode.

Forgive me for asking a silly question but..using the usb in I assume it has two separate usb sockets for these channels?? Also if using a condenser mic will the 48v phantom work of battery use
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
There's only one USB socket on each mixer. The single USB connection carries bidirectional traffic for all input and output channels simultaneously. You'll need a recording application like Audacity on the host that can identify all of the stereo and mono channels coming from the mixers. Yes, phantom power is supplied when running from the battery on the L-8. Hope that answers your questions.

The first problem i see with the zoom without taking the fantom power into concideration is the sound pads are not on a dedicated channel, so if you have a gaming pc ran into one and a phone in the other then you loose you pads that you may need for a live broadcast. Question i have for both mixers, ---- If i am in the middle of a gaming broadcast and i get a phone call, can i take the call but mute my mic and the phone line while not muting other channels yet have a conversation via the mixer?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
With version 2.0 and above firmware, Rode added this feature (description copied from the Rode web site): "Finally, the ‘host’ (channel 1) can now speak with callers on the USB, Smartphone and Bluetooth channels without the conversation being recorded or going to the monitor outputs. To enable this, press both the Solo and Mute buttons on channel 1, then both the Solo and Mute buttons on any of the channels you want to speak to (can be multiple channels if you have multiple callers). " You may need to have the "pre-fade listen" feature enabled in the Advanced/Audio/Channels settings for that feature to work; Rode's description isn't clear.

@@iotwavelength6716 I did find this out though. The L-20 had monitor layers. So you could easily run one of the monitor line directly to the gaming PC, and slide down what ever channels you don't want going to it without altering other lines out. Now thats a crazy way of doing it but its pretty slick if you think about it. If you have multiple instruments, mics and etcetra, including a couple PC's you can allow say a private video chat going on with one PC while live streaming on another and simply move decide what is going where. Its pretty exhaustive on what can be done. But the bigest problem with the L-20 is they faders don't move as you move between the layers. I think this may be a great product line for beginners in a "peaceful" environment. If you take the L-20 into a fast paced stressful environment it would be too easy to get screwed up and loose track of whats going on because of the faders not moving as you move around. Things like that make a huge difference. I love the product for what it is, just a little disappointed that product number two took away what a podcaster would use quite regularly. Its great for beginner small bands that want to record themselves and play around with the recordings using knobs but outside of that,,,, it is what it is. I may end up getting one down the road if i don't find something comparably priced with the monitor ability and moving faders etcetra, but i have a fealing that those are probably going to be minimum twice as much in price....

Can’t you also customize the effects pads with your own on the Zoom?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
Yes you can customize the effects pads on the L-8 as well a the RodeCaster. The main difference is that all 8 banks of 8 effects pads are always available on the RodeCaster Pro, however the 6 effects pads (2 channels times 3 pads each) on the L-8 are only available if the associated channels aren't being used for other functions.

Im thinking of a Livetrak L8 for broadcasting in a community centre, would you say this is a good product for it, particularly the USB side of it?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
Yes, the USB output from both devices is high quality. The stereo mix can be sent to a PC via USB along with the individual channel outputs, and you can select which channel(s) you want to use on the PC with a digital audio workstation (DAW) like Audacity, GarageBand, or others.

Is it possible to live record video and music preformances on Ethier device I want raw live moments with studio sound quality weither on periscope or twitch even Instagram preformances I also need to plug in 7 instruments so I can talk and preform
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
You can record the audio on both devices and/or feed or mix the high quality stereo audio output from either of these mixers into a separate video recorder or camera. For 7 instruments and vocals you'd need a larger mixer with 8 or more inputs like the Zoom L-12.

Does the zoom have global audio ducking?
@cineffect3 ай бұрын
Yes and much more, you can program it with the EQ and save into a scene, you can basically create "many audio duckings" and recall them later. 🤣

Wanted to watch this but couldn’t get past the loud hiss on your audio.
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
You noticed the irony there, eh? Moral of the story - don't use the RodeCaster Pro monitor output as the input to a camcorder. The RC telephone output is much quieter. The audio during the L-8 and RodeCaster detailed walkthroughs were taken from the RodeCaster SD card recording, and they're MUCH quieter. I just got a little lazy. Lesson learned.

What's with the background hissing?
@iotwavelength67164 жыл бұрын
The audio at the beginning of the recording was taken from the RodeCaster Pro speaker output fed into a camcorder with AGC turned on, and it's very noisy. The later audio in the recording is taken from the RodeCaster Pro SD card, and it's very quiet. Lesson learned: use the RodeCaster Pro TRRS output or headphone outputs to feed other pieces of equipment.

elementary OS vs Ubuntu? They're aimed at different end user demographics, but they can both definitely do the job well. I guess it depends on whether you want to be a 'power user' or just focus on the fundamentals. It's good to have a choice, though.
