Derek takes another, slightly briefer look at all the features of both the Rodecaster Pro and the Zoom L-8 mixing boards. After using both mixers professionally in a podcast and Streaming studio, we get a great overview of the different people who would benefit from boththe Zoom and the Rodecaster Mixer. Please Subscribe and hit the bell so you don't miss out on the interactive LIVE events advising on these mixing desks.
I am also happy to problem solve over on my Facebook page where pics and vids can be exchanged.

This was a very thorough comparison. It's a tough choice for me. I've been podcasting for years off of mixer boards and my trusty Zoom H4N. But I'm over due for an upgrade. I would love the Rodecaster Pro if it had 2 more XLR channels. That's really my main issue with it. I have people hop in on my show all the time, and being able to throw another mic on the board, on the fly is a necessary feature. Thanks for the help. I hope Rode comes out with an updated model with extra channels, and universal drivers.

True. I was considering bringing in another rodecaster to my new video studio UNTIL I realised I needed to add a producer’s mic AND the first booking asked for two phone calls at once. (I don’t like using Bluetooth in the studio)

great video. I have the Zoom and mostly using it for video podcast right now. Big issue for bringing in video guests to podcast...there is no mix minus on the usb channel. looks like Rode has that. But, another youtuber said you can fix this using Loopback software. Also, Rode doesn't have the EQ, but with their firmware update...they have effects which allow you to adjust many EQ like items. On the zoom, the TRRS mix minus works okay, but the guest is never loud enough even with fader up. And the guest can't hear the board that well. would love to hear any suggestions you have about lack of usb mix minus on the Zoom L-8. Another instance where this becomes a problem is when I have my hosts reacting to a video while it's playing. So, their mics AND the system audio (or Ecamm live audio which I use for the video recording and audio inputs) are on. And, when both are on, there is a slight echo in the video audio when I listen later bc it creates a loop.

@@CastawayStudios sometimes, I don't know, its sooo hard to decide - so many details to observe! But since I love my stationary setup, I went with the MixPre for most portability, and, well, when you're out and about and want to record something - 32bit float is great, because things like impromptu recording serenading frogs in the middle of the night can be quite challenging to get the level right, especially when you can't get your mics quite close enough... with 32bit float, you can raise the signal without raising the noise floor at equal rate! ___if I think about real life miracles, that's one of them! :D

Castaway Studios, I recently learned the Roadcaster Pro has an issue with mix-minus: If a person calls in via iPhone (a mix-minus setup), they will not hear an audio input or KZbin audio. For example: a host and the guest (via mix-minus) analyzing a KZbin or other audio clip. Questions: If you know,… 1. Does the ZOOM LiveTrak L-8 suffer this mix-minus issue? 2. Will the guest (connected via mix-minus) hear the sound pads? Thanks in advance, yYM
@CastawayStudios
@CastawayStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Mix minus treats the all audio coming into the rcp as a microphone and removes it from what it sends out (back to the guest). You can bring KZbin or pc audio in through the trrs channel and it will work fine.

@@CastawayStudios Thanks Derek! I'm leaning towards the L-12 to be able to run different microphones (vintage Hi/Lo-Z, condensers, dynamics) at the same time, more controls, old school mix-minus, better pre-amps, etc.
@DJWoody714
@DJWoody714 4 жыл бұрын
This is the reason why I'm leaning towards the L8 or maybe even the L12 because of the inputs. On the Rodecaster, you should be able to hookup a DJ controller using a Y cable (RCA to 1/8th) and plug in it into the TRRS (Phone) Input. But then by doing so, you give up the phone function. It's give and take. With the L8, you can easily plug in the controller to any of the multiple Line Level inputs and still have the phone function.

I purchased the L-8 as I have a few other Zoom devices and love them. Unfortunately, it proved to be a terrible choice. The L-8 has a serious incompatibility issue with Windows, so much so that I've had to stop using it. The L-8 cannot be used for reliable live recording.

@docjoesweeney

@@CastawayStudios from Zoom. We have confirmed the issue and confirmed that there is a Windows Background Process interfering with the driver. We currently have no schedule for this issue being resolved. If we receive any updates I we will reach out to you. But again, I have no schedule for that to occur. .... Upon further questions, Zoom states. The Windows process is called WmiPrvSE.exe. This background process is what causes the audio dropout to occur. ... That process is non-optional in Windows, meaning that the L-8 can't run reliably. My own tests suggest that avoiding the L-8 ASIO features reduces later drop outs, but they still occur. If at any point in a Win 10 session the L8 is used as an ASIO sound source, the audio will stop working frequently, requiring the L-8 to be powered down and back up. This keeps happening until both Win10 and the L8 are powered down and restarted. It's a real shame, as the unit has features I absolutely love. But the reliability of the software driver renders it a dangerous gamble for any live casting or for interviews.

I like everything the Rode has to offer, and I'm kinda leaning towards that machine. Would you recommend using it to also record vocals? (for a song). My thinking is maybe use it to record my clients using that machine, then throwing it into any DAW (audacity, or whatever) and then just getting the levels correct and then export the track as a whole. Or even just save the beat to one of the pads and record them together. Will some thing like that work?

Thanks for the TLDR version of the shootout, Derek. One question related to your comment on the rodecaster monitor output. Did I understand you correctly that there’s some kind of muting to reduce feedback from monitors? If yes, would this explain some of the reports of interference when using l/r 1/4” jack to 3.5mm trs into a camera’s audio in? Some people reported this with 1.1.0 firmware - is this an issue you’ve encountered?
@CastawayStudios

Six MikeMike the automated monitor muting is only for the twin mono monitor outputs at the back. Not the headphone stereo outs. I haven’t tried outputting a headphone jack to a camera But I’m sure you would need a camera that would accept line level audio and not just mic level.

I have a question though: I'm starting a video podcast where Skype is going to be the main method of communication for both my 2-3 cohosts and guests. Because of this format, is spending the extra $200 US dollars on the Rodecaster justified or necessary? I need to purchase a mixer/audio interface soon and, even after watching your other videos on the Zoom L-8's Mix Minus feature, I'm not sure if the L-8 can do what I need it to. My budget is limited (which is why I'm considering the L-8) but this is an investment for the next five years so I want to make sure I get the right equipment the first time around. Hi Derek, thanks for the Video. It was useful. Just one question: I would use it for broadcasting (Producing Features Live on tape, Recording Interviews etc) and Podcasting - but also for recording my own Music, Jingles and Stuff. You said, the Zoom records tracks separately, does the Rodecaster the same? (after the update) - and 2. Does the Rodecaster work fine with every DAW? (I use Hindenburg, Pro Tools, and Digas)

Hey man, thanks for this video, earlier videos and your replies to my messages. I went for the rodecaster with a pod mic in the end and it’s just as good as you described. Do you have any recommendations for professional headphones to use with it? All the best

I use audio technica m50x (I have six sets). You can get cheaper versions to suit your budget. (50, 40, 30, 20). I like the changeable Cable and the fact that they don’t hurt me after 5 hours solid wear. Make sure you don’t get noise cancelling ones. The name must have studio in it somewhere.

Thanks mate, I’ll avoid noise cancelling. I use my rodecaster to record telephone interviews directly into adobe audacity. Is there a good way to create a transcript from the audio file? I’m currently just writing it down.

@@CastawayStudios Hi Derek. Thanks for these awesome vids. Why no noice cancelling headphones ?
@CastawayStudios
@CastawayStudios 4 жыл бұрын
@@deanlaffan2390 Noise cancelling headphones are designed to give you the best audio listening experience at the time of listening. When you are editing or monitoring, you want to hear as close as you can to the actual audio. If there is noise, you want to hear it otherwise you will master the track oblivious to what the actual audio is like.

Castaway Studios thanks. I thought they only cancelled ambient ( external) noise. Not noise in the audio stream

Been trying to set up a podcast studio in my home country....price of the Rcp has skyrocketed beyond my stiff budget...looks like the l8 is the way to go but am concerned about the Skype calls and multitrack recording....kindly help point me in the right direction. Looking forward to your reply.

Skype is easy. Audio in through USB and mix minus out through a cable to the pc.

On the Podcaster Pro can you record from a guitar or is it not designed to do so?

Not really suited to instruments. I once recorded a band for a podcast by mixing the band through a Zoom L-12 then mixed out to the trrs connection in the rodecaster pro.

Great Comparison! Have you looked at the specs of the recently announced Zoom Podtrak P8? If so, since they aren't available yet, what does your gut tell you on how it will compare to both the RCP and the L8? For my use I'm probably more interested in the RCP than the L8, but I'm wondering if I should wait for the P8 in November or screw it and just get the RCP now?

Hi, This is a question I've asked Rhode but never had a reply 🙂. I do music podcast and wanted to know if or how can a DJ Controller be connected to the Rhodecaster Pro? I hope you can give me an answer because I really do like it because of all the features, which would help me out so I can get rid of some of the equipment I have 🙂. Thank you Ché

I'd say keep asking Røde. My guess is it would not be possible.

The Zoom is a HUGE let down. Build quality is like a toy, the screen is TINY and you can't use AC power and connect to the computer.

I found that if I left it on and the pc hibernated, the batteries would drain.

good afternoon derek does the rodecaster pro is compatible with OBS while using the TRRS cable to output audio from the computer for skype call? unless you set it up differently thank you. however the long shootout was the most significant review I ever watched on youtube in regards this kind of review.. I love details explanation so that was a fantastic explanation on both L8 and on the rodecasterpro. I am still in the process of choosing (my side I desire live podcast and having a phone call and a skype call plus playing the music some moment fading in and out. I am also sensing using OBS however it is either reaper or obs cannot both on the usb port? (unless two computers right plus skype call lol) as you mentioned in the long shootout...
