Okay but Julien ranting about the mile actually speaks to my soul. I’m still in high school and most of the year I’m not worrying about grades, I’m worrying about being embarrassed in front of my class during the damn mile.
@ncastro58135 жыл бұрын
Kaylee Marie when I was in High School we had to run a mile on the track which is 4 laps. We had to run each lap in under 2 minutes, or THE WHOLE CLASS HAD TO RUN THE LAP AGAIN. I was pretty slow and that last lap was damn near impossible for me to do in 2 min. So the mile on top of a healthy dose of judgement, hatred, and bullying. So, I feel your pain. My prayers are with you! Lol

Good human guide to befriending pets! 1. Ask pup’s parent if you can pet them 2. kneel slowly down to pup’s level 3. Use soft whisper ASMR voice to introduce yourself 4. Let them see the palms of your hand, giving them the option to smell you and get used to you 5. If pup engages, give gentle pets on head or back Bonus: if pup has a service vest on, do not engage. That pup is working hard for it’s human friend! admire at a distance
@jalapeno11196 жыл бұрын
Introduce your hand in a fist to let the pup smell you! If you stick your hand out flat the pup could bite your fingers and it will hurt! But if you let them smell a fist and they try to bite it, it won't hurt as much.
@nailsarelife5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see you include that last part. Absolutely do not engage a service animal UNLESS you see one alone. In that instance, still don't pet the animal. Ask him/her what's wrong and to show you. Then, you follow them. This is because if they are alone, the person they are helping more than likely needs human help of some sort.
@miafine25845 жыл бұрын
Nails Are Life from what little I know about service dogs, you’re probably right, if they’re alone but have a vest on, maybe their human has had a seizure or panic attack or something and the dog has gone for help. Same as a service dog barking a lot, I’d just follow it hoping it will lead me to the hurt person.

It always makes me SO MAD when I see people walk up and start petting service dogs. People are liter idiots.
@elizabethmion45955 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As a service dog handler, we don't mind the admiration. We get it; they're adorable! But hey, my life can literally depend on them catching cues so if you're over here making kissy noises at the "puppy" I might die. So please don't. Also, it's illegal. If you have questions, you can approach, just ignore the dog unless the handler says it's okay. Most handlers don't mind helping to educate (plus we gush over our fur babies just everyone else!) Remember, we're normal people!

I used to baby sit this little girl and her mom had 3 dogs. Two of the dogs were very sweet and always cuddled with me right away, but there was this one Chihuahua who had trust issues. Like at first he would growl at me when I would walk by. But it only took a few times just kinda keeping my distance and showing the dog how I treated the other dogs. And soon enough I would come over and the dog would greet me at the door with a wag and when I would sit down he would plop down on my lap. And I think that’s why people hate Chihuahuas, Pitbulls, cats etc. They automatically assume that the animal would love them. Okay thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I dont remember this being a thing when I was in school but my daughter is in gr 7 this yr and THEY have to run the mile! She was sooooo anxious about it!
@707Bubby6 жыл бұрын
I technically had to run the mile in school but I took gym as a senior and so my gym teacher just made me take attendance everyday and hand out papers instead of actually doing gym, but you could do the mile and make it in time while WALKING, it really is pointless, I think it would be better to have health class and not gym but a class but a class about how to stay fit and healthy, but gym was so pointless in hs. I also played three sports in highschool and I feel like if you play a sport you should get out of gym, I was running or swimming at LEAST 3 miles a day every day after school already on top of everything else.
@kaiwagner29246 жыл бұрын
Jenna and Julien! To answer you tickle question, we actually talked about this in out anatomy class. So tickling is actually a form of pain that the body cannot process to the point of actually showing normal pain signs. If you think about it, the places where you are the most ticklish have the most nerve endings (armpit, behind the knee, etc.) The nerve endings become stimulated sending the response to the brain and tells it there is something that might be threatening. The mend then responds to let you know this sensation is happening by making you laugh, jolt out of the way from it, cry (just like when cutting an onion because your body is saying there is an oder/gas that is harmful), and, in some people, act more aggressively due to the flight or fight theory (tickling cause your body to let out small amounts of adrenalin). For our family psychology class, we talked about the theory behind why parents tickle their kids and how it is a bonding moment. When you laugh your body releases serotonin which makes your mood stable/happy. You get this every time you let your dogs as well. So the excess serotonin released by each person could cause them to create a better bond. Usually it is just the fact that the parent is spending time with the child. Hope this helped! Love watching your podcasts and channels!! You make my day better!

@grimeydanny42145 жыл бұрын
its also pretty easy to teach them consent with people too, like asking their friends if they want a hug before giving them a hug
@brittanybilson99445 жыл бұрын
I’ve taught my kids consent from the time they can talk. They obviously don’t know sexual consent until they are a bit older, but as soon as they can talk I tell them that someone shouldn’t have to tell them to stop more than once. I teach them that people can sometimes think something is fun at first, but then stop having fun and then want you to stop (like being tickled). And so on. It’s not one talk you have when their teenagers.. it’s a constant talk that you have that evolves over time.
@brittanybilson99445 жыл бұрын

being ticklish helps identify foreign stuff on your body, like with the spider example. if a bug is crawling on you, you get tickled and the immediate reaction is to slap it off, just as you try to push and kick a person away if they are tickling you. as for the laughing part, wanting to be touched/being playful is really what makes you laugh. it's like with any touching, if you are tickled by a friend you are inclined to laugh bc it is familiar and harmless (same with letting a bug crawl on your hand), but if a stranger tried tickling you you'd scream or tell them to fuck off. tickling is not an enjoyable sensation, so it makes sense that after a while laughter turns into annoyance, because as an evolutionary thing its supposed to warn you of mosquitos and shit

Idk, with this explanation you make it seem like the laughter is voluntary, but I've always equated tickling to torture, always made it known that I hated it, and I still laughed. I don't think the laughter is anything you can control, regardless of who's tickling, whether it's someone familiar or a stranger. But the rest of your explanation makes a lot of sense.

Yea thanks p.e. for making me insecure about my physical capabilities. Pretty much every guy in my class played football, so they were all really good at endurance, like running a mile. And of course literally all we did and got graded on was endurance. I thought i was just this unathletic guy who couldn't perform well, even with a lot of training. Destined to be "that one unfit dude". Cut to when i started going to the gym a couple of years ago where i found out i am great at explosive exercises like weightlifting and sprinting. Right when i started i could even do things like 8 proper form pull ups, something a lot of athletic people even struggle with. If you told me that i wouldn't have been so insecure. I should've known because my brothers also do weightlifting, just like my father when he was young. The confidence boost i got since then is massive, now i'm in great shape and love exercise. If we would've been tested on that kind of stuff i would've out sprinted most of my classmates no doubt in a 100 meter dash. But nooo, we had to do the Cooper test and shuttle runs (no, shuttle runs don't properly test sprinting, it's way more endurance). So yea screw p.e., it's a dumb class destroying kids their confidence. A completely useless class in high school, and the fact that it's still a thing actually annoys me so much. Hang in there kids.
@ellaaa20845 жыл бұрын
I feel like this is such a great argument for diversified PE classes. Kids give up on the idea of sports and physical activity because the environment in most health/gym classes favours a specific type of athlete. I think of all the kids who found weightlifting and other activities after years of hating PE, and it reminds me of the many who gave up because there was no psychological safety in their exploration of sports and no understanding of varying skills and abilities. I used to skip gym or do the bare minimum, but I played sports and was a runner for most of my teen years. I just hated gym.
@YuinRuri4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I thought I was unfit and bad at sports and getting bullied by teacher and the peers did not help. We were forced to do different kind of sports and I didn't realize then but I was so anxious about being at least moderate at sports it gave me anxiety. I hated running. So. Much. And then I got in high school and our teacher was so understanding and cool I got motivated. I started running long distance with my sis and actually got 9/10 in Cooper Test. So f*ck u p.e. Childhood os not supposed to be spent by measuring everything to the point you make a child lose hope of ever achieving anything.
@HarryStikers4 жыл бұрын
@@YuinRuri The same thing can be said about grades in general. For some kids if they just aren't good at taking tests or something and they don't get excellent grades they just assume they're dumb and give up, it's really sad.

The reason the Pittsburgh Salad has fries on it is because it's a derivative of a famous Pittsburgh sandwich. The sandwich has french fries and coleslaw on it and its origin story is that the steel workers would put everything together in one so they could eat it quickly and wouldn't have to carry a lot to the mills and mines.

An even more fun fact is that for most of the beginning of my life, I didn't find yawning contagious. Believe it or not, for some reason I just didn't find it contagious for whatever reason. Then, one day I was in my mom's car reading a random piece of paper because I was bored, and I read that yawning is contagious, and from that day on, sure enough, yawning became contagious. It's like my body finally caught up to how it should be acting or something idk. I just find it to be so fascinating that for the longest time, yawning wasn't contagious for me, and then I read something saying that yawning is contagious, and it became my reality. I 100% think tickling is a form of abuse for some people and I'll die on this hill. I remember never being safe at family get togethers bc they knew I was ticklish and I would get held down and tickled and it was awful. One time my brother picked me up and was tickling me and I literally peed all over him. I also almost broke a bfs nose when he thought he'd be cute and sneak up on me to tickle my feet. I kicked out and def made his lip bleed. Tickling is basically torture for me, and just because I laughed involuntarily, ppl thought it was funny. But imagine if people could react the way they actually felt (screaming or crying etc.), then it wouldn't be considered such an innocent thing. Now if someone gets close to an especially sensitive spot on my body, I cringe away before they can even touch me. Anyway, this got serious but I really wish people would understand how it feels for some of us. It's not cute.
@WelderBarbie1006 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Blount, I absolutely agree! My boyfriend (30 years old now) went through the same thing as a child. His sisters would hold him down and tickle him so badly that one time he kicked out involuntarily and kicked his sisters two front teeth out. They did it so often, that it was so traumatizing, that now (same as you) people can’t get close to him without him flinching and pulling away. Even me. Sometimes I’ll forget and casually put my hand on his knee when we’re sitting side by side, and he reels back and if I don’t pull my hand away, he moves his leg away. It’s an absolute shame that he’s been scarred so badly by this. 100%, tickling is a form of abuse when it’s taken that far.
@888pil6 жыл бұрын
agree. it's harmless to some ppl but personally i hate it so much. all my friends know not to try it bc when though I'll laugh while it's happening I'll be really upset after. i really hate the feeling of not having control of my body and being overpowered...

When my 3 brothers and I were young kids, my mom would tickle us until we were crying in frustration. We would be screaming "Stop! Go away!" and swiping at her and pushing her, but she would interpret it as us being playful and keep doing it. Now that we're all older (the youngest is a teenager), we can actually fight her off and reinforce that we HATE tickling. My guy knows he's not allowed to tickle me, nor does he try.
@accountnolongerinuse34336 жыл бұрын
Honestly! Tickling, while not as serious as sexual abuse, has _many_ links to it, especially with children. You're saying "no, stop" but because your body reacts involuntary your pleas are ignored and your bodily autonomy is taken away. I fucking hate it when people tickle me and for that reason I hate seeing others be tickled, especially children. It's so easy to venture into the realm of domination and abuse without even realising you're doing so. I wish more people could see that.

Oh my god. Don’t even get me STARTED on rude dog people who refuse to leash their dogs in places where it is legally required. These ladies in the park were illegally walking several large dogs off leash and one started walking towards my dog and one lady had the GALL to ask if my dog was friendly. Like WTF? Doesn’t matter if my dog is friendly, my dog is on a leash and yours isn’t and mine can’t get away if your dog snaps at her. Leash your damn dog where it is legally required, which is literally most places.

There's a community park by my house with nice paths that connect a residential area to grocery stores so a lot of people use it to walk to grocery stores but almost everyone else uses it as a their own dog park or dog run letting their off leash dogs go crazy. I train dogs professionally and this is what I would tell my clients, if they were faced with your situation: advocate for your dog and don't let people be disrespectful to them. This means that if/when someone goes to invade your dog's space - and that your dog clearly isn't interested, you need to step in and tell them no. Just because you're at the dog park, it doesn't give people the right to act like rude assholes. Dogs are super sensitive to their personal space and the more they have to speak up in order to be heard (gain space, be left alone, etc), the more reactivity/aggression will manifest. Not cool, people. Not cool. Leave other people's dogs alone and at least, learn to ask before touching. In an age where the word consent is on everyone's lips, I find it baffling that we're still there explaining why treating dogs like stuffed animals is not only wrong, but also ignorant.
@zaydbrewer41874 жыл бұрын
yes and. the worst part is when the dog reacts in its equivalent of what a person's reaction would be and then the dog is either put down or put in a watch list and in some cases given to a new home even when the owner is a great one. that or the bread of dog or species of animal is pegged as an aggressive group.

About the ticklish conversation: Apparently being tickled stimulates the same part of your brain that is in charge of emotional responses or pain. This is why the body movement of someone being tickled can resemble the movements of someone who is in pain. So it could just be a mechanism that developed to instinctively protect vulnerable parts of the body from unexpected contact, but it doesn't have the same importance anymore, so now it just feels silly and unnecessary.

Sometimes I'll forget to hold my hand out and I talk quietly and just go for the head and they cower and im liKE nooooOOOOOO BABY I DIDNT MEAN TO SCARE YOU and then i hold my hand out normally. It's her luck that she doesn't look a lot like a pitt, otherwise she would face more shit than she does now.

Ok I so agree with this!!!! I was always taught as a kid to go up and ask the owner if I could pet their dog because sometimes they would say something like not right now he is really stressed or scared or something so I wouldn’t and I think that that is proper dog politeness
@707Bubby6 жыл бұрын
pit bulls get a bad rep, but they are actually SUPER affectionate and loyal, thats actually WHY they CAN be so aggressive, because they are people pleasers and want to protect you and be loved and do what makes their owner happy, which is why in the wrong hands they get bad behaviors and aggressive (like with any dog really). Pitbulls are also really just mutts, which is why they are more commonly mistreated, because they are cheap if not free, and easy to obtain, which is why they can get then used and trained for bad purposes. My pit bull is more loving than my lab. I never let anyone really pet my dog on a walk/put in public, because even though my dogs are nice dogs, all dogs can get overstimulated and scared and thats why dogs bite. My dogs were both shelter dogs, one was turned over after eating pot, and one was a stray on the streets, and you just don't know what triggers a dog, even ones you have had since puppies. So for a stranger to go and not ask and just pet your dog is so bad. Like I have known a lot of service animals, and dogs with lots of anxiety and dogs with really bad ear issues where if you pet their ears(like most people do) it puts them in a lot of pain. You should never pet someones dog without asking, you dont know if they are working or if you petting them somewhere will hurt or scare them.

Re:tickles : The theory is it trains you to fight, get insects or animals off you to avoid being bitten etc. Because people are usually most ticklish in weak, senitive body parts. The more you're tickled, the better you get at reacting quickly. The involuntary laughing encourages the tickler to keep going so you get better at wriggling away or scrunching up to defend yourself. So that reaction of like breaking someone's nose is kind of the end goal. Anyway: tickling is highkey awful and there's always someone who takes it too far and doesn't listen when you say stop. 💀

Yes, we co-evolved with a few species of animals, and yes our ancestors purposely did this for food, travel, and protection. HOWEVER: 1. All animals, including us, have a common ancestor, so no matter what, on a literal and scientific level, no other animals were "put on this earth" for us. 2. The actions of our (human) ancestors are not a valid reason to keep doing something. If you need examples, just think of the obvious ones, like slavery and the treatment of women. I'm not equating the situations, but as a comparison, I'm saying that people living in those times felt completely justified in their thoughts and actions towards those without power.

I hated gym. One time I had hoop earrings in & I sat on the bleachers because I was not doing that shit. & my teacher asked me why I was sitting down and I was like “I can’t run the mile today I have hoop earrings in.”.. It worked, she didn’t argue with me lmao

The official definition of “salad” is: “a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish, or other ingredients.” So technically, if the French fries are cold, and tossed in ranch, then the Pittsburgh salad is a perfectly valid salad. It’s not a healthy salad, but then neither is mac salad…

Here's my kind of interesting tickle story: So when I was a really young kid, maybe like 5 or 7, my dad used to tickle me. He used to do this "Here comes the claw!" thing and tickle me. But one day it went pretty south and when I was laying down and he was tickling me, my leg swung in the air and I ended up kicking him straight in the head pretty hard. I very vividly remember it because we immediately stopped, and I stopped laughing, and I remember his first response was "Whoa, blacked out there for a moment." It was a bit concerning, but he said he was alright after, and I didn't think much of it. Years later, like 10 years later, when we were going back home from visiting my cousin after she gave birth at a hospital, my dad admitted that the kick to the head was way more serious than I thought it was, and he got admitted into the same hospital. Apparently the morning after I kicked him in the head, when he woke up he could barely move. He was freaking out because of how paralyzed he was and he had to call 911. Even called my uncle saying that if anything happened to him, that my uncle should start looking out for my mom and I. Turns out when he got to the hospital, the kick to the head was so bad that the nurses told him his blood pressure was way too high and he should've been dead, he was lucky to be alive. Although after the nurses told him that, apparently he said to them that he was so proud of me for being able to kick that hard, and that's also how I got enrolled into taekwondo... So considering my soft spot for tickling is my feet, people have learned to not tickle me. Also glad that I didn't accidentally kill my dad!

As a severe asthmatic, I always had to do the mile but I was lucky that as long as I finished they gave me an A. Other students had to make certain times. But I remember the last time I had to do the mile in HS (I don't believe it was the last time the class did), the teacher demanded I did the mile when he knew I was doing physical therapy for my knee and my asthma was acting up. I think I finished (he may have stopped me early) but I remember being so out of it that I just kept barely shuffling around the track. He had to run after me and physically stop me and sit me down. It also aggravated my knee and I ended up on crutches for a couple weeks. Dude thought he was going to get fired and kept apologizing to me. I later ended up getting out the physical portion of our tests for the rest of the year....although paper tests in gym class suck as well.

I've never understood teachers that push kids in gym. I am not a good swimmer, I can keep myself up but swimming was always a fear of mine. In HS we had swimming as part of our gym curriculum, and I had told my gym teacher that I couldn't swim well and wasn't comfortable diving head first into the pool. She made me do it anyway, in front of everyone. I hit my head, got really disoriented and inhaled a bunch of water. Fortunately I was able to pull myself out. I wish I would have said something to the principal or anyone for that matter. She should have been reprimanded for that.

Some parents send their kids to pet my service dog. Like WHY WOULD THAT BE OK?! Or they say LOOK AT THE DOGGY!! Don’t teach your kids to stare at service dogs!
@rarecoast90006 жыл бұрын
Emma Scofield How come it’s not okay to point out the dog to ur kid? Or is just if they point them out and the kid goes to pet it?
@spoonielife6 жыл бұрын
- - it’s totally fine if you’re pointing out that the dog is a working dog that is doing something awesome. But you should never teach your kid to look/stare at a service dog because staring is a form of distraction. It can also make the disabled person really uncomfortable kind of like if you were staring at or pointing out a wheelchair. Also the people saying it tend to say it really loudly and it can be disruptive to you and the dog.

Kat Monk this pisses me off so much. Service dogs are working. Yes they’re cute. Yes you might wanna pet them but DONT. That person needs their animal. It can be life or death.

I've lived with animals my whole life and my dad works with horses for a living, and the worst problems we've ever had with any of our pets or with his work have been caused by people who don't know what they're doing. When people mess up, especially around larger animals like horses, they blame the animal for reacting in a natural way to the person doing something stupid. That was the first thing I learned as a kid around horses, to read the animal and give them the respect they deserve. Honestly people drive me crazy sometimes, especially people who either have no sense when it comes to animals or those who think they know more about your pet than you do. Giving animals respect is the number one thing you should do whenever you come into contact with them.
