There are very tolerable affordable mics. I don't think they're really just selling their names to us. When you buy a mic, you're not just paying for the mic that you get, you're paying for the mics and components that did not meet QA standards, you're also paying for R&D, depending on the manufacturing location you may be paying for much more expensive labor. With all that being said, if you don't care about any of that, that's fine and I agree, the affordable microphone market has a lot of very decent sounding mics.

@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
That's the thing, I don't know if there is a real definition of broadcast mic. I've tried to understand it, and the only thing I have been able to come up with from a few discussions with other audio KZbinrs is that they are versatile and work on a large number of people and they are designed to be used relatively close to the mouth. They should probably do well with handling noise rejection and plosive rejection too, but your guess on what a real "broadcast" mic is, is as good as mine.

Maono mic has impedance of 600 Ohm, my Berringer 8500 is 150 Ohm - does it mean that I will have to have way higher gain on moano to get the same level of signal? More impedance = lower signal = more gain needed? I noticed that out of my 3 dynamic mics from behringer: 8500 (150 Ohm) , SL75C (310 Ohm) and BA85A (300 Ohm) when I connect them directly to my Canon R8 (I am lazy to use audio interface and add it in post - I want good enough instant audio ) - audio level from 8500 was the loudest. Am I correct that if I get Maono PD100 mic which is 600 Ohm the audio will be even lower which means I can't use it without audio interface? Maono's impedance is 4x higher than Behringer 8500
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that impedance does not indicate a quieter output. To determine which microphone will require more gain you would need to look at the SENSITIVITY of the microphone. That will tell you what is quieter and what is louder. However, you want your preamp to have an input impedance 5-10x your microphones impedance and that may not be the case and then you'll start to hear the frequency response of the higher impedance mics start to be altered. Here's an article from JZ discussing this: intshop.jzmic.com/blogs/blog/microphone-impedance-how-does-it-matter

It sounds okay, better than something like the xm8500 and the various chi-fi mics in this price class. But the longer I hear it, the more hollow and distant it sounds, that V curve really hurts it. No this does not need 48v phantom power. This is a dynamic microphone and dynamic microphones do not require phantom power. Ribbon microphones also do not require phantom power. It is condenser microphones which require the +48v phantom power. side note: This doesn't really matter to your question but just sharing the information. Not all condensers require a full +48v phantom power. There are electret condenser mics that require as low as 11-15v of power, and then there are smaller mics like lavalier microphones which are condensers, but only require plug in power which is about 3-5v.

If you're terribly concerned with hiss, something like the cloudlifter would likely be beneficial there (I haven't tried it with this mic). However, I recently did a podcast with the SM7b into the Podtrak P4 and although it was a little hissy, it wasn't the worst. Here's a link to that episode, and you be the judge: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqnFqZyNZ9mIq5Y If you're doing multiple mics simultaneously the noise floor will compound upon itself though if you do no mixing and run no gate/spectral denoise. If you already have the mics and interface, I'd just say try it without and determine what your level of acceptable noise is. Then if you feel like you need the lower the noise, try a little bit of spectral denoise, and if that's not good enough then go for a cloudlifter or a mic activator that is similar performance but lower cost.

I have the Maono ao4 and it works well, but I prefer a dynamic for voice-overs.

Can i use this for recording vocals and acoustic guitar .. not professional just amateur use only..
@Podcastage5 ай бұрын
What did you think of the sound of the vocals and acoustic guitar in this video? It's not my favorite sound ever, but I think you can make it work for sure if this is what your budget allows.

@@Podcastage i have 0 knowledge about mic .. yes the video you make recording acoustic guitar is beyond my expected quality is it normal or you edited the sound quality..
@w33blord66 Жыл бұрын
It is definitely serviceable, especially if you absolutely need that "podcast-mic" look. However, I do find it a bit thin and grading in sound and don't think I could listen to a very long podcast featuring it.

Yeah not the best sounding mic but it's cheap and it actually functions without any complete deal breakers.

I know this is an older video at 9months ago but i recently picking up this Microphone as my other was wasnt working anymore, disclaimer im a noob at all of this and didnt understand the difference between condenser mics and dynamic mic, i have this paired with my m-audio solo, the issue im running into using this for gaming / discord calls, my gain on the m-audio is almost at 10. I'm trying to figure out how to boost the mic input volume without having it peak and cutting out. I have installed equalizer apo and tried to play around with the gain inside of that but still having troubles of having to use the mic super close to my mouth im running windows 11 and the mic volume in the system settings it at 100 already. Discord is also set to 100% as well would anyone happen to have a solution for all of this

Can you do a review of the Fduce SL40?

Perhaps I will check it out in the future.

I like your singing! I'm glad you compared with an XM8500 as that's my only dynamic and it's been a lifesaver a few times I needed something done ASAP but there was roadworks nearby. Have you seen the reviews by others of the BaiFeili C414 or V10 which are direct "copies" of the AKG and Austrian Audio? Watching this review I saw how many mics seem to copy design but deliver different sound; so are mic knock-off brands less taboo? I like your style of comparison.
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
I have not seen reviews of those mics. I actually try to avoid other microphone reviews until after I publish my review. I do not want to be influenced by others opinions.

No dramas, it was a while ago and left me with a confused, icky-suspicious feeling; but then does that make me a brand slave? My curiosity did get the better of me and I ordered the BFL"C414". *shrug* 😸

How do you adjust the post boost? Do you do it on the 2i2?
@Podcastage Жыл бұрын
Now. I increase the level in my non-linear video editor FINAL CUT PRO X. You don't need to do this in a video editor, you can do this in any DAW or Streaming software.
@brett-westgrove-country-music Жыл бұрын
When he says “post boost” it’s referring to gain boost after recording - hence post, not pre (after, not before recording). Adjusting the 2i2 interface would be “pre” by definition. Post processing would be done in your daw or using outboard gear sent to from your recording device. Seemed like the terminology was partially confusing you so I figured I’d clear it up 👍 As for more Specifics, you’d usually use a plunging to boost a signal (gain, output level in an eq, a compressor or limiter, etc) or just use a tool that boosts the audio file amplitude itself.

IDK why but i like this one o.0 I usually go for "flat" or reference neutral mics, with no, or as little as possible coloration... Someone explain pls

I can't explain. You like what you like.

I will review the podmec usb. I was unaware that there was an AT2040USB version so that's not even ordered yet.

IMO this microphone is decent a little on the dry sounding side the mids and highs are 25% low.

I thought it had a bit of a vintage quality on the electric guitar. And by vintage I mean it sounded like it had no fucking tone at all. I have a use for that. Gonna pick this one up for my collection.

Hahaha. I wonder if the Maono team thought "this will be a great effect microphone" when they were designing it.

Man, that proximity response is MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH-DEE! And to give you some idea of why I say that, I'm listening on speakers that I know have very poor low end response, and it stuck out to me as being just BURIED in those upper-low frequencies. Kinda surprising, considering the frequency response graph you showed indicated a dip from about 125 to 650. Not to knock the thing; the user just has to know they can't get right up on the grill with it. Used about three or six inches away, it sounds fine. I'd want to EQ it, but I EQ every mic I use. Not a big deal.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. It's always fascintiatng hearing how people like the available mics. Cheers
