I think the kalandra at the lake IS the reflection. I think kalandra was in search of a way to make the mirrors, and found it in the lake, but when she left, she left behind this reflection. This reflection can only give a piece of what the full kalandra can, and since she's just a reflection, she's forever trapped in the lake. Maybe she was a byproduct of the process that makes the actual mirrors of kalandra. Maybe the only way to have the ability to copy something requires you yourself to be made into a copy. This would explain her memory. She started existing in the lake. Maybe the times she makes it "out" are times she doesn't exist because real kalandra is in the lake.

After watching the show Severance, a theory popped in my mind due to something very similar to Kalandra returning in the lake happening. Basically, Kalandra might have a reason to stay in the lake, but she only remembers it once she exits the lake, so she returns to the lake on her own. That would explain why it takes a little more longer when she exits flying very fast, takes her more time to slow down and turn back

Here are a few Ideas I had. 1 Kalandra is not Kalandra. The real Kalandra looked into the lake and moved on age ago in her wandering. The entity we interact with is her reflection. Of the lake bound to the lake. 2 When Kalandra manages to leave the lake her conciseness is puled back to the lake and reformed in a new body made of lake water/liquid (as all reflections are made off). 3 The liquid forming her bold body becomes the base for mirrors of Kalandra retaining their power of reflection. The distorting aspect of the liquid id tied to the surface of the lake. 4 What if innocence was the visitor to the lake and his distorted reflection (Sin) got to leave. It would explain what he is pro Human anti-god/self-interest. 5 If as you say Sin spoke with Kalandra and she had a hand in creating the dark ember, what item did he use to reflect to create it. What is the dark ember a (distorted) reflection off?

Off the wall theory time: We never actually enter the Lake itself. We walk on platforms that it creates based on the tablet our map device consumes. So the map is projecting our tablet onto the Lake. We know Kalandra existed before Wraeclast, so I think Kalandra stumbled upon this weird plasma, called it a "Lake" because it looked watery, and her idea of it became reality. Her imagination projected itself onto the Lake, creating Wraeclast accidentally through her wandering imagination. She thinks of gods, people start worshipping them. She thinks of visitors, visitors are called there. She's an accidental "god" not because Divinity is channeled into her by believers, but because her own belief is being reflected by the Lake. She believed herself into a god, and when she tried to escape, inverted those beliefs and corrupted herself, or her equal disdain created the other half. So we're seeing Divine Kalandra and Corrupt Kalandra when we see the either of them. But I'm pretty sure of one thing... The Lake is the primordial essence of the Atlas.

I have a few theories that are unfortunately not supported by much... I wonder if Kalandra didn't change every time she tried to escape. Since she doesn't remember anything after each attempt, maybe something happened to her? More sinisterly, what if she *did* escape... but every escape leaves a reflection in the lake, with no memory of her escape because *it was created at that point*.

One thing that came to my mind first was some like "Hmm, Reflecting Things, Items, Potentially Characters, maybe even Ourselves....Where did i see that before?. Ah Yes, that fancy Named Unique Strand Map! Whakawairu Tuahu, or whatever it is called. We Fight a Reflection of ourselves, or at least the Class, in that Map too. The Boss, eventho a completely different Species, is tagged with Torment and Temptation, Things that could be a feature to Kalandra too. The Temptation of Leaving the Lake, and the Torment of Ending back in it for Eternity. The Strand Map is also covered in Dark, until u reveal it its "Form". Its also on the BEach/Strand, with Water around. For Some Reason that instantly hit my Mind playing the Lake a couple Times, but i do think that the Stand Map is so very old in the Game, that it probably has absolutely nothing to do with this Expansion and Kalandra. I need more Kalandra in my life. I think GGG is putting down the final pieces for the big puzzle, I realy hope that a lot of the poe1 questions get answered before poe2 takes place. Kalandra is such a iconic figure seems to me that a lot of writing work was done for her along all those years but they just didn't find the right place to put it out for us. The lake was a realy good start but I hope we see more in a soon future. Loved the video and your work is absolutely amazing!!!!!

My hypothesis is that Wraeclast is in some sort of time loop. Each league, each character is in some sort of loop that rotates. Lake Kalandra is the epicenter of the loop so Kalandra cannot fly out of there. The lake mirrored the Wrecklast perfectly, looping over and over again. Allowing Druids of the Broken Circle to see past loops allowing them to see the future. Until Kalandra, out of hatred for the gods, helped create the Beast and broke the mirror, Circle. Therefore, Druids of the Broken Circle can no longer see the future and the past. I also think that Blood Crucible works the same as incursion only on Wraeclast scales. The Last to Die does not open dimension portals, but time portals that allow her to travel to past loops. Sorry for my english. Not my native language

Great video! After delving into this league's lore, I came to similar conclusions as you did in your video, which makes me think this is the correct interpretation. I hadn't noticed the negative Kalandra though XD I still think the Mother of Two is the Goddess of Justice. I do hope we'll get more Kalandra lore in the future.

I, too, have separately made these conclusions. It seems clear that Sin planted the Seed at Kalandra's behest, and that Kalandra masterminded the downfall of the gods and much of what has since occurred. In the Chamber of Innocence, one mural shows Sin, Innocence, their mother... and a black bird. As GGG have certainly been aware of Kalandra's identity for a long time, I wonder if the bird isn't somehow symbolic. For ease of reference, you can view this mural in this video at 17:37.

Just a fun thing i noticed. The idea of her being unable to escape the lake corresponds to the relativity theory. "Gravitational time dilation occurs because objects with a lot of mass create a strong gravitational field. The gravitational field is really a curving of space and time. The stronger the gravity, the more spacetime curves, and the slower time itself proceeds." . So assuming she is inside a land with denser gravity. Kalandra would experience the outside world as moving faster than inside the lake. Which correcsponds to her being in another dimension. And it would be impossible for her to escape. It would be like time travel.

The fact that Time is capitalised like that every time makes it seem like it is also a person or at least force onto its own. Usually you wouldn't write it as 'Time' if you refer to the concept of time, but they do. So maybe that's something to look into as well.

"A likeness cast by faith"... Would mean that Innocence came to godhood by result of the templars' faith that Sin had to be purged. I think the mirrors are what Kalandra gives to people seeking her for advice, and Sin having already an inverted reflection born from faith, she gave him a broken mirror. That would also mean that what she found most interesting is how the process of ascending to godhood could in that case have the same effect as the lake. And maybe that's why devoting your life to freeing Kalandra was a very bad idea and the Order of the Djinn burned everything and everyone relating to Kalandra and the lake. Maybe under those still waters lie the inverted reflections of every one who has visited the place, and freeing Kalandra would free these too. Or maybe with enough devotees, Wraeclast itself would become it's own reflection... Well that last one wouldn't be so bad seeing how Wraeclast is a nightmarish place.

uhm So she knows that she tried to leave the lake, yet she does not remember anything or how she did it. She is looking for someone to free her. Now i won't say the two things are related, but if you go in Act 3 Solaris Temple , and you enter the room with the very first wraeclast map device(the one we used back in beta for reference...i was there u.u); you can read few things , but one stands out. I cant remember the exact Malachai words but he said "i entered the map device thousands time , the last time i felt like something wanted me to come back " what if he was talking about Kalandra ; he did not specified who or what he sensed (theres alot of speculation here ). Malachai is such an ass but he's the only human in wraeclast with knowledge and expertise to create devices to open the way to new place/worlds. Sadly we killed him (no hella no).

My personal theory is Kalandra is not Innocence and Sin's mother, but an old relative (probably their great-great-grandmother), who was sealed by her children into the Lake. Her blood relative through many generations were then Innocence and Sin. Her power is divided into the gems and orbs. The gods' power is also from her power concentrating through the worship of people, the gems and flesh offering. The Beast is a tool (a husk) to absord the gods' and the gems' power (Lady Dialla) to resummon Kalandra to Wraeclast again (similar to the Ten Tails in Naruto), but in the end it is a failed product because it produced corruption which corrupts people's mind and they all tried to use its power to become gods themselves. So the last mean she left to Sin is placing the gods' power within our body and with the gems (somehow we're like the Jinchuriki in Naruto lol) make us an offering to summon her back. That's why she were so desperate to guide us to the Lake using the tablet. Her Ultimate purpose is to feed us with enough power to summon her back to Wraeclast.

1) What if the heist researches meant the divine font in the labyrinth? As someone else in the comment section mentioned: Izaro copies Kalandras line about wisdom. 2) are her escape attempts somehow detectable on the other side? This may conflict with your theory on the two reflections inside the lake (one good, one evil). But where to would she escape? and in what form may we have encountered her in Wraeclast? Cool video! I like really like lore heavy leagues like expedition or heist, but don't really have the time to look into it as deep as you do. Appreciate your work!

15:09 Actually, I think that's the evil one. The voiceline is labeled as Evilandra on PoEDB and it has the "evil" distortion effect applied to it like her other lines. GGG should've really made her design asymmetrical in some way to make them a bit easier to tell apart.

If when visiting the lake, it truly does create a negative reflection which gets stuck in the lake, then of course the scholars would burn themselves to hide knowledge of the lake. It's like learning that teleportation is possible, but you die in the process, with a clone getting to live your life. As for how mirrors of kalandra work, maybe it is a piece of the lake which is taken back to wreaclast? It would mean that it creates a mirror outside of the lake, but for the same reason mirrored beings like Kalandra aren't able to leave the lake, a mirrored item is not able to enter a mirror again. Sorry if this was very rambly, but this is so fascinating to think about

In regards to her being a bird, while I think there is more to it within the worlds lore and all, I do think it's also a nice metaphor for a bird in a cage. Another question, what do you think is up with Kitava being often mentioned in context to corruption? IIRC some NPCs speak of "Kitavas corruption" or calling Kitava not just the god of hunger but also the god of corruption (Not sure on this one, but IIRC there were atleast similar statements)

This makes me think they will eventually bring her back either in an expansion or in POE2 as its weird to comment on how she knows one will set her free and make it seem like its us only for us to never actually set her free.

They very intentionally left clues that both Innocence and Sin are the sons of Kalandra. Sin's wings and eyes are almost exactly the same as Kalandra. The jewelry she wears also looks exactly like the adornment of Innocence's symbol on his back, and is golden. She is also a bird that looks very, very much like Sin in a way that really can't be pure coincidence. I have long thought that the story of Sin and Innocence made absolutely no sense, and wrote it off as templar propaganda. Probably to retcon out Kalandra, and prevent people from looking for her. But with this league I also wonder if Innocence's origins are more problematic than that.

if time behaves differently around the lake, then it isn't entirely out of this realm that it can reflect time itself. and if time is a circle, the entrapment of kalandra might also make some sense (can't really describe what's in my head, "wibbly wobbly timey wimey" stuff, but), something along the lines of trying to leave towards one "end", but then looping back from/through the other. another thought riding on the time related theorizing: maybe kalandra didn't enter from an earlier point in time (closer to the beginning of time), but rather towards the end of time? these ideas have no real basis, i'm fairly new to the lore

Okay so here's a theory about the lake that piggybacks on your idea that the lake found us in our time of need. Throwing it back to the lightbringer and progenitor story. I'd it possible it knows the one thing that can stop the two ,is kalandra and if we can find a way to help her escape ,no matter how much the lake has twisted her mind. She is the one to deal with the other two in our time of need. Essentially ascending being found worthy by a secret labyrinth.

Weird alt-theory to all of this Sin business, that makes some sense in light of Forbidden Sanctum lore: Innocence was the one who visited Kalandra, not Sin. Kalandra describes her visitor as having issues with faith and image, and Maxarius was certainly having issues with generating enough image and faith to ascend to godhood. Hearing Kalandra speak her mind about the gods of Wraeclast, calling them “Thieves of Virtue”, might have inspired Maxarius to use his brother as a “broken mirror” of himself and use him as a prop to justify his new religion’s purity/impurity paradigm, giving him the name Kalandra used for gods as a sort of cruel irony.

Kalandra in my opinion is the mother of sin&innocence, hear me out: As in this video already mentioned, kalandra entered the lake and got mirrored. As noodle said, time moves faster in the lake. So I think it works this way: When one of them try to escape, the other is allowed to be in wraeclast as the opposite happens. As kalandra described - she hates religion and god, is kind and helps - the mirrored image is going the exact opposite. That means when she tried to escape , evil kalandra walked on wraeclast and the mother of sin and innocence as we know is very harsh and strict , and she vanished. That means like in interstellar: The escaping kalandra feels like its only minutes but on wraeclast it could be years or decades.

If divinity = gods, it is not too far fetched that corruption = Beyond/Breach demons. I think it is not the beast who called Dominus and Malachai, but rather that they got enticed by demons. Malachai wanting to make the most perfect of "nightmares" The puzlzle card and the darkest dream gives us a clue that nightmares, might refer to the breachlords domains

Also she references zana multiple times or well quotes her with a mirror twist Also with her leaving ,after the sirus fight. I'm not sure if it was always like this but. After the fight it still says one monster remaining. At the start it says 16. Since we don't see kirac anymore as he's been taken to the hideout, but no sirus,no degen tornados, only one left us zana. Why?

My random wild theory why knowledge of the lake is so dangerous, that all records were destroyed, and, most importantly, why those who knew about the lake were burned: If the laws of Wraeclast are such, that belief, and by extension knowledge, gives power (for example, to gods), then knowledge, and belief in, the lake, makes the lake more powerful. But, if the power of the lake is to essentially create the opposite of anything, then too many people believing in it would undo the world of Wraeclast, because it would create an Anti-Wraeclast, therefore cancelling out Wraeclast and ending all existence. One could even take this a step further, and assume that the lake has the power to create "anti-time", which would mean that, if the lake is too powerful, it could rewrite history so that nothing ever existed.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this and it's just a creative decision on GGG's part but it's hard to ignore the fact that both Kalandra and Sin have wings. Maybe Sin really is her child (a child that she bore while outside the lake and forgot about) but Innocence was a twisted reflection of Sin (perhaps made by accident when Sin entered the lake). If this bit of heresy is true, then Sin and Innocence would still be twins and Kalandra would still be their mother. The origins we already know from the Order might be a perversion where Innocence became the favored child instead while Sin became the black sheep of the family. My bet is that the reason the Lake hates us, the player, is that it can't reflect us. We are somehow more than Unique.

Could we also have already been reflected? We start as criminals washed up on the beach and ended up heroes who freed Wraeclast from a pantheon of corrupted gods. A reflection of a reflection is not permitted with Mirrors, so maybe the Lake can't re-reflect us.

interesting theories, if sin is the thief that came to the lake it wouldn't be too far fetched to think that innocence was created at that moment as a reflection of sin, or maybe sin thought he couldn't fill the role of the savior as he views himself as very flawed and asked to make a reflection of himself that would be able to fill that role hoping the reflection wouldn't be burdened with all his flaws. But in turn his reflection innocence didn't have his doubts and so viewed itself as "perfect" and therefore let his own flaws cause all sorts of problems I also really like the idea of sin existing before innocence in a sort of poetic way here leaving a comment 2 years after the video release so no one will probably read it ^^'

...holy fuck ,I just had a ...moment. what if the expedition were the servants of kalandra and when she went missing,it shattered her memory ,the one thing she knew before she entered the lake. They are the one thing she's not allowed to see by the lake. Perhaps cause it uses it to control her why is she the one group beyond her vision. Even after the kalgur entered wraeclast. Wouldnt she be able to see all of wraeclast. The kalgur having a similar power to kalandra, seeing into the future with how it scares dannig ,I wonder if he has deeper knowledge n hiding the true translation of the logbooks. He's known to lie to his own brethren, why wouldnt he keep another secret ,a major secret that only he n his people know of that link from us. I don't know if you mentioned this, but I thought kalandra was the mother of sin and innocence, but maybe that is just someone's understanding of the situation. Maybe a god entered then got reflected into the two extreme forms of himself - sin and innocence. So she was effectively their parent, but also not because she isn't their actual mother. Also, the reason they destroyed access to the lake is obviously because the mechanic is bad. Kekw

I did mention that I actually don't think she's the Mother of Two (at 17:30) but I do think there could be some reflection shenanigans going on that could make her actually be the Mother. There's a lot of mystery left in that them there Lake!

I think the lake is half of a duality. The overworld, when an underworld also exists. The lake has tornadoes and trees, as well as the water. Maybe the other side is the opposite. Sort of like Severance the tv series.

8:20 much slower, not faster. For her it was for example a day and for Wraeclast it was much more time, they invented religion. So in comparison time on Wraeclast go much faster than in the lake. Or am I wrong?

What if the beast is the dark reflection of Sin, what if when Sin entered the lake he was mirrored in such a way where the Sin we interact with is not the Sin that used to be, but is instead a "beautiful" reflection of the true Sin?
