I read somewhere that Lana's reference to "Candle in the Wind" means that she doesn't want to become like Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana, who Elton sings about in the song. Lana doesn't want to let the fame get to her like It did Monroe, and doesn't want to be attacked by the press like Princess Diana was. If interpreted this way, the lyric relates heavily to other tracks on the album, especially "Dark But Just a Game"
@melodyvalentine87793 жыл бұрын
Does she me sing that lyric again on this album? She says it in Mariners Apartment Complex aswell "I ain't no candle in the wind"

Your point about whether she is thinking back when she use to play for free is a good point, specially in the context of White Dress (and the whole album) rethinking fame and what it means for her!

My thoughts on the album- (This album is a steep grower) Lana is basically "contemplating throughout the album" hence the title track and the title of the album. She starts with White Dress remembering how it was pre-fame for her and then it progresses and reaches a point (very different) to Tulsa Jesus Freak/White Hot Forever (detailing her relation with her ex- he is a Christian and works in Tulsa OK but originally from CA) it was also supposed to be the album title which would've taken it to a more relationship-centric vibe but instead she focuses on broader subjects including love, her place in society as an artist (WAH, DBJAG, etc), touches on her misconstrued image by the media. She is figuring out whether it's worth it or what? (If they'll love me, they'll love cuz I'm wild at heart) It seems like she found a tight-knit circle of women in music like Joan Benz and Stevie Nicks (Track- DTWD) and she will continue on with her career and will keep going and then she closes the album with a mic drop- Track 11 (For free) It shows the biggest reality of the industry. The best/most real of albums and musicians are never looked at cuz they don't play the dark fame game it seems like that's the route she will take as well. All this she is contemplating under the chemtrails over the country club (where her journey from white dress has brought her-Track 2) Hence, she named it Chemtrails Over The Country Club (refer to the lyric on the song) She said in her interview that this album was about she felt like she didn't know where to go. On this album she focuses more inwards rather than outwards as it was on NFR. So, instead of why America is not the greatest now she is onto what American Dream has done to her, how she is suffering because of it. It’s very confessional.

Fun fact, Yosemite was made for her Lust for Life (which is my favorite you should do a video on it!☺️) but they considered the song too happy for Lust for Life. I find that weird because I consider LFL to be her most hopeful album. Maybe I shouldn’t equate hopeful with happiness?

Thank you for this excellent reaction! The Joan Lana is talking about is Joan Baez. Also, on the Nikki Lane duet, I wish you had talked about the Tammy Wynette reference. She was a country music queen that lived tragically due to her choice of husbands especially her last husband. Tammy's daughters blame him for Tammy's death. There were rumors he was emotionally and physically abusive to her. A sad story.
