Psychiatry’s Substructure vs. Human Nature
By Jonas Vennike Ditlevsen
In Danish with English subtitles
Are the foundations of psychiatry crumbling due to a lack of resources or are those foundations themselves the true problem?
The debate about psychiatry surely dates back to the early days of the field. Every aspect of psychiatry has been examined and criticized; the psychotropic medications, diagnoses, use of force, revolving-door patients, etc. Yet perhaps a far more fundamental issue is understanding how psychiatry’s substructure makes it difficult to change the system, itself.
Ditlevsen’s talk is a thorough examination of the psychiatric view of human beings and human suffering developed through psychiatry's modern inpatient practice, and what impact that view has on not just the patients of that system, but even its staff.
Jonas also examines just how the psychiatric disease theory continually influence psychologists and even the field of psychology itself.
Is this illness model psychiatry practices a truly good basis for dealing with human emotional and mental suffering?
Jonas Vennike Ditlevsen is a psychologist and debater who has made a series of videos examining the Danish psychiatric system.
