It is a joke to see Remco burn all 5 teammates bofore Pogi burns Tratnik and sivakov 😂
@ogradar85Ай бұрын
Actually it wasn't a stupid tactic at all. Our team (Slovenia) did a mistake when they went all out after that Castrillo attack. They said this after the race. They burned 2 domestiques in 500m for no reason, but I think they were afraid the break would make too much of a gap. They couldn't rely on Tratnik to come out on top in that group. Pogi immediately saw the attacks coming in advance, so he got ahead of the other team's tactics. He had Tratnik ahead and Primož behind in the peloton waiting. When Tratnik did his part, Remco had only Wellens and Van Gils helping him, but both of them fell apart in that first climb. That was game over. Belgians were weak (they missed WVA badly), as were we (Slovenians), but now Pogi created a 2vs1 situation vs the Belgians (Roglič sitting in the back). After that it was all group 2 syndrome.
@alphaniner3770Ай бұрын
I think you have a good point here. One thing that played a big role here I think is that for many 'domestiques' the season seemed to be already over - only few showed good form (Mollema, Tratnik). This made many teams rather nervous I guess. The absence of radio communication and country teams made this probably worse. Then we could see (also with the womens race) that it was in fact very difficult to drop the stronger riders. Pogacar dropped all his competitors with his surprise attack - otherwise I doubt he could easily drop Van der Poel, which he certainly wasn't planning to sprint against (just watch his pre race interview when this was asked).

Tadej himself said it was. It was luck Remco's team was more of a mess.
@ArnyRimmerАй бұрын
It was a crazy move from Pogačar. But it was probably the best he could do for a chance at the title. Because Sloveniens were weak, Roglič was unusable for the job of a domestic player, and opponents started to go away. No one in the peloton would be able to catch them, so Pogačar would have to control all the riders himself. And that is not possible. But since Tratnik was in front (which is a good tactic) it wasn't so bad to jump to the front. If the Tratnik be in the peloton, he would also drag his opponents, who would rest and then start anyway. This is how Pogačar avoided further brakes, forced the opponent to work much earlier than they thought, so they were tired in the end. Of course, with a stronger team, a different tactic would have been better for Tadej, but with what he had at his disposal, it was probably the best he could do in the end if he wanted to have any chance of fighting for the title. And that was greit for us, viewers to see a battle of favorites. Otherwise, the race would simply be won by some second-rate driver, whom the favorites would let pass. Pogačar was obviously also lucky with Sivakov. Evenepoel was clearly not in form and the absence of Van Aert also took its toll. If Belgium were stronger, it would be much more difficult for Pogačar. But Van der Poel surprised positively. In the end it was an amazing race, but as a fan of Pogačar I suffered a lot. That title was terribly important to Tadej. And unfortunately, the opponents relied a lot on that. And so they wouldn't have helped the Pogačars even once, even though that would definitively lose their chance for the title. But with the fact that Evenepoel and Van der Poel already have titles, they could be completely at ease and played the trick.

Hot take: Sivakov did the right thing. He would have been dropped way earlier if Pogi didn't wait for him. The only reason he was there is because Pogi was letting him. If Sivakov didn't do a few small pulls then he would have just been dead weight. His only chance was to work with Pogi doing small pulls and hope for a miracle where his legs held on for a podium finish. Just riding Pogi's wheel is what everyone seems to think he should have done but that was not one of his options. Also France didn't really have anything else going on at that point this was their only chance. It's not like dropping back and helping Alaphilippe or something like that was an option.

Pogačar is the greatest male rider in history. Period. The great Eddy Merckx even said as much, after this remarkable ride. We are witnessing an incredible time in cycling history, and somehow, Pogačar keeps us entertained while killing everyone so dominantly. I'm still a little bent out of shape that he skipped La Vuelta, and think it would have been realistic for him to win all three grand tours and still have a good chance to win the Worlds. Chris, great commentary as usual. However, I disagree that Pavel shouldn't have worked. There's more on the line than just the win, and podium for France would have been great, especially given Alaphillipe crashed out. If the win is the only thing, then no, don't pull, but that's not the case as there is more to play for. Nobody is more aware of what Tadej's capable of than Pavel. This much is certain, there is not one other rider on the start list that could have done what Tadej Pogacar did. Maintaining that lead out on his own for that long is a remarkable accomplishment and the sustained power output must have been other worldly. Yes, other teams should have brought him back, but... WOW! That was an amazing display of pure power.
@frankgallagher5786Ай бұрын
TP is incredibly talented no doubt. I think one of his greatest qualities is his almost childlike approach, in that i mean he just dares to wing it. He really went out on a limb with his blunt attack and most of the others simply get stuck in their heads about what to do. No communication and cant call for advice. Pogi will eventually lose this edge I'm afraid so lets all just savor and appreciate this incredible athlete at his peak.

Thank you Chris. It is always great to get your take on the race. The other coverage doesn't really do it justice. Pog knew it was a dumb move, but made it work anyway. I thought it was interesting how Evenepoel and Van der Poel said they wouldn't do anything different.
@leomaduro8661Ай бұрын
In hindsight, Tadej was right to go, as no consistent chase was getting organized behind him. At the World's, nobody has a true team at their disposal to put at work up front. Evenepoel and MVDP had to do it all by themselves and on top of that fending off attacks from within the chasing group. Great daring move and the one with also the best legs won.

Another great analysis ! Knuckleheads Galore here--I could not believe when Pogi went with pretty much the full Belgian and Dutch teams behind and waiting. Pogi dared and won big doing something unexpected but I have to say this is one of those few races where he finished off looking dead. I thought he might get caught around the 14 km to go mark but got himself reorganized. Bring on Lombardia and more smooches! Oh, and Ben was great and MvdP managed brilliantly on a very tough course too.

A superb victory for Tadej. He's had a great year but this win was special. Attacking from so far out was a bold move but the poor tactics of the Dutch and Belgian teams obviously helped. Kudos to Tratnik for dropping back and helping Tadej catch up with the leading group. Also kudos to Ben O'Connor. He's been the dark horse of the season. He nearly won the Vuelta and came second in this race. Definitely a rider to watch next season.

Chris, i explained how cycling works to my brotherna month ago. This was the 3rd race he saw. Even he knew that the breakaway will not work with Tadej. I am sure Tadej knew that too when he launched to bridge. If a newbie race watcher understands such a basic tactic, the greatest cyclist of all time with an insane race sense surely does too. Tadej not for one second even pretended anyone is going to work with him. Him and Tratnik straight up moved to the front and Tadej recovered at P8, and then moved to P2 before attack. There was no flicking of elbows or looking back at the breakaway asking them to set pace.

Was it a knucklehead move for Tadej to attack with 100km still to go in the UCI World Championships? Maybe, but if anyone can pull off a 'knucklehead' move like that, it's Tadej! He's the kind of rider who thrives on turning the unexpected into a winning strategy. And while nobody else dared, he went for it in classic Tadej fashion-bold, aggressive, and always entertaining. What’s next for him? The big question now is whether he can win all five Monuments. He’s already proven he can dominate races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. The challenge will be the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix, but if anyone can adapt and rise to the occasion, it's him. The guy's a legend in the making!

I believe Remco didn’t want to let Pogacar gain more time, but I don’t think it would have made a difference. After the climb, the Netherlands, Spain, and the U.S. each had two riders in the group, but everyone was looking to Remco first and Mathieu second, without even taking their turns at the front. I think Remco’s best move would have been to do one strong pull, like he did in the Olympics, and drop them off his wheel. After that, with a small group working together and taking turns, it might have been possible to make a comeback. The only real chance was if there were 5-6 strong riders, each doing their part.
