Poi Review - Trapped in the Past

Poi is a 3D Platformer by developer Polykid. It tries very hard to be a modern version of Super Mario 64. By that, I mean it’s basically Super Mario 64 with a fresh coat of paint and two playable protagonists.
In this review, I take a look at the good, the bad, and the boring of this new indie 3D platformer and what it could have done differently. I also look at how its devoted ties to the past are more of a hindrance than a benefit.
Poi isn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not great either. It seems content with being just okay, which in itself is a problem.

I've been watching a lot of Nitro Rad videos lately, and he's really inspired me a lot with this video. I hope I did him proud with it. There's a lot I don't love about Poi, but I'll be damned if I still didn't have a lot of fun with it. Funny how that goes sometimes.

This reminds me of the low-budget B games we don’t see often. You know exactly what you’re going to get, and it won’t offer any surprises.

I went in with low expectations and ended up really enjoying myself. There aren't that many straight up Mario 64 clones out there, so, for me, the lack of innovation was a bonus. 7/10 A sequel could be great.

Personally, I really quite enjoy this game. All these criticisms are totally valid, but to me, that just makes the game unsuccessful on a critical level. If you just go in hoping for a good time, I find it to be rather enjoyable, especially since the lowered skill floor enables lower skill players to experience tricks that feel like they take a lot of skill to pull off.

It looks quite charming, but also generic. With better level and character design but the same engine, physics, and camera, a sequel could be really good. Also, more burning Star Citizen, please.

Yeah, I agree. There's a good foundation here, if nothing else, so I feel like a sequel could be fantastic.
