I would love to speak with this guy on his policy on home building. He is not talking to actual contractors The contractors keep saying there isn't enough materials or labor to keep up with current building demands. A guy bough a old house not far from me. He has to wait one to two years for a contractor to fit him in for demolition, then another year to start building. OR,, he can hire one of those fly by night contractors that Mike Holms makes his living chasing and fixing their disasters. Yes, the red tape would help speed up the process , but who's going to do the work. Then you need more inspectors, not to mention electricity, water, and sewer. Who is going to cut/process more trees and mine/process other building materials? Can't see how it can be done. Three to four years, just to train the workers

There were homeless people under previous Conservative governments and what was their response then? Not much. Same with the Opioid issue. Implement Right to Work legislation (make union dues optional) & convert defined benefit pension plans to defined contribution pension plans. GDP increases & property taxes stay lowered. #1 reason for homelessness is bad behaviour 😮, then renovictions and then falling behind on your rent.

Making union dues optional undermines unions and causes the concept to fail, which I'm guessing is your goal. I'm an investor and I've worked in a union shop. If I didn't have a union protecting me the abuse would have been off the charts and the pay would have left me with an extremely limited quality of life. Why would that be the goal? Unions can certainly be problematic but they are a necessary evil.

How does this make unions more financially accountable and how can they perform with less resources? From my work experience in a union shop I am all too aware of how bad life would have been without my union. I agree that unions protect bad workers, and they function on seniority instead of merit, that's why I call them a necessary evil.

On the topic of housing- in all the years I was renting there was never a time I didnt have a room mate. At one point it meant renting a one bedroom with a room mate. One person had the bedroom and the other slept on the couch/ hide-a-bed in the living room. At least all were warm with a roof over our heads. Society did not OWE me having my own apt then. Why do some people insist on having their own apt/space now, in a housing shortage? My own apt would have been wonderful, but I simply couldnt afford to pay rent on my own and bill other bills as well - so I always had room mates to share costs. Perhaps they need to look at occupancy laws and change them to accomodate a " room mate". ( not overcrowded conditions - simply doubling up if tenants agree)

Allowing areas for them to have fires for heat would help too, I've done winter camping before and keeping warm at night without any source of heat is nearly impossible when the temperature starts getting below -20 unless you have expensive gear. Propane is great but the city comes down on them if they get found with propane tanks (mostly because a lot of them don't know how to use them safely)
