I actually worked on this film...and here's what happened. The director made a movie, that, while not the greatest ever, tried to get to the heart of the characters and story and build on something new while keeping to the feel of the original. It didn't test well. There was a MAJOR studio intervention and rewrite/reshoot/reedit. And they surgically removed the stories heart, leaving a montage of cool stunts and little else. Trust me, Ericson was NOT happy about the outcome thru the whole process.

The problem is the original is too damn good not to mention the start of a film legends career. Hard to compete with that. Also let’s not forget the other legend Patrick.

I didn't like how teresa Palmer's character was written. In the first movie her character had meaning in the remake there was absolutely no reason for her character to even have been in it.

I never bothered to watch the remake because I knew there was no way they were going to capture the heart of the original. It’s one I easily passed up on. But I do appreciate and respect the hard work it takes to make a film.

I personally really love the original point break. It's one of my favorite movies honestly. But I definitely agree there wasn't any real reason to do a remake. Especially the version that was produced. But the whole theme of reaching "Nirvana", was at the root of the origional as well. It was just woven into the story more subtlety an in my opinion, more creatively. When they introduce Bodi in the first one, Tyler makes it a point to say, "they call him bodhisattva". Which is basically someone who's enlightened who instead of going off into a state of bliss away from society, they go into the world to influence others to also become enlightened. This mission is written into Bodis character throughout the entire movie in a great way in the origional. From the moment you referenced where Johnny says, "I can't describe what I'm feeling right now", to the very end when Johnny says "vaya con dios". Which means, "Go with God" in Spanish. It's more or less Johnny saying to Bodi, go into your bliss. Which on the surface appears to be Bodis death, but I don't think that's the message behind that moment. At least it's not how I interpret it. To really get an idea of that aspect of the movie I think having some understanding of Buddhism is the ticket. It really makes all the "spiritual" elements crystal clear. This was mine and my fathers favorite movie to watch together. So it has a strong sentimental value to me as well. But I'm also fairly interested in Buddhism an other similar philosophies. But as I mentioned, the first movie was great, the second one not only wasn't good in my opinion, it wasn't necessary.

+Reverse SteveJobs No, John Cena should be LS. Then Salma Hayek could be Leia, because ethnicity and no one will notice her age when she's suppose to be sibbling with a 20-something JC. To mix it up let's have Peter Dinklage be the wookie and Tommy Wiseau as Han Solo. Morgan Freeman will be Obi-van-Kenobi, because we need a black class act. And we also need some asian, perhaps inside C-3PO. Lastly introducing a plottwist, there's a new character named Boba Vader.

You and your friend sound like pathetic excuse for human beings to waste two hours of your precious time staring at a movie poster, only to waste even more of your time rewatching an overhyped cash grab such as the force awakens. At least something like point break features REAL extraordinary feats. You sit on your ass relating to unreal fantasy instead of appreciating the awesome unfabricated stunts of your fellow humans.

You know what, everytime you comment, we'll see it again :) I like the fact that you seriously said "... unreal fantasy...", try to read that part again and think about it. We get a lot of action movies like Point Break *Cough, Cough, Fast & Furious*, when were the last time we had a Star Wars movie? Oh yeah, 10 years ago. Next time, my friend and I won't stare at the movie poster. We'll just stare at you KZbin account ;)

Yeah but howd you feel if they made a remake of a fantastic film and fuck it all up? Like Star Wars, it was the greatest saga of all time untill the prequels. Now people only talk about it as a trilogy, as the prequels are a discrase. And that is what i feel will happen with Memento, considering they dont have to remake it. I bet if you didnt know what year it was released and watched it, you could have guessed it was made in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, or 2010s. It simly does not age

+MovieMulletGuy Sure, i understand that. but like the new Transporter Refueled was terrible. It was just a cash grab, and i was really bored while watching it. I regret that i payed my ticket, since it was pretty expensive. And i liked the previous ones with Statham. So yeaah, ill watch the new Memento, but wont expect much of it. And the Star Wars thing was just an Example. Because of the shitty prequels, people remember Anakin as a stupid annoying kid, and everyone else as politicians. Also, Darth Vader at the end of Episode III was rediculous when he screamed "Nooooooooooo". So yeah, ill have the original, but probably not feel the same way about it.

These reviews are so opinionated tbh. He wasnt pretending to be connected to the criminals, he wanted to be with the fbi after the death of his friend happened while doing crazy sports and then the criminal spoke to him about not letting other peoples' path bring you down and thats when he realizes he may want to go down this road again but then he'd lose trust in the fbi so its a internal conflict the whole movie. Lots of plot twists and you will catch the feels at some points. I'd recommend, this movie was poorly reviewed by this guy

This movie is poorly reviewed by most critics only because it came out at Christmas, while Star Wars is still in theaters. Those sins are unredeemable in the eyes of the easily influenceable as dumb as it sounds that's the real reason behind all that bad press. In the heart of the see is also being demolished, it's a good movie so it's a shame.

Isak Wolff Yeah but it just ruins it somehow... It doesn't need to be done. There is no point of it...
@lyricsfromsweden
@lyricsfromsweden 8 жыл бұрын
+Isak Wolff It kinda does. It ruins the original's reputation for the masses. We have been able to recommend it to people saying it's a great movie. If a remake is bad and a lot of people see it then it's more difficult to sell the original as a great movie to the masses. Because A: If they find the remake terrible they will not see the original regardless of what we tell them. And B: If they decide to watch the original then all the twists and turns will already be apparent to them because they saw a shitty remake. Their experience will be totally ruined and they will most likely dismiss it as being a great movie because the experience of exploring it will already spoiled for them. So you are wrong, a shitty remake does ruin the original film.
@lyricsfromsweden
@lyricsfromsweden 8 жыл бұрын
Isak Wolff I didn't really understand what you meant with your second point - not being condescending or anything but maybe there were some typo's or bad auto correction or something. But to answer your first one I'm guessing you're talking about Star Wars and stuff like that and I think that that's due to the fans of the original film. Because I don't think there are a lot of merchandise for films like The Secret in Their Eyes who's remake will probably be terrible by the way. When Hollywood does a remake of a blockbuster they tend to sell copies of the original just so that they can milk more money from people. When Hollywood does a remake of an indie film or a foreign film they often try to pretend as if that original doesn't exist. This is not based on actual studies though, I'm just stating the impression I get when they do this. But even considering what I was saying about blockbusters, are copies of Point Break (the original) selling a lot right now? Because I haven't noticed it at all. Are people who haven't seen the original liking this remake enough to buy the original or even bother to check if it exists?

It seems to be a curse of the 10:ths... All 20 year old movers always get a remake.... well Robin hood and the three musketers get one every 20 year for the last 80 or so. Now its turn of the 90-tys move to be remade.... and one thing that was special about the 90-tys movies was great action sequences..... i could hammer out name for a hour... but just moves like T2, Speed, Matrix, Die hard (well 2&3, 1 was actually a 90-tys movie), Golden eye, and so on... they was often critcted that there story was not that great.. but .. they was often not really much worse than most other movies. They was often fairly good. But what really made the 90-tys action movies was the composition. Its not just about great scenase. Its not about great storys, its not about great acting, its not about great music. Its how everything fits toghetter. And this part have they been unable to copy in the remakes. Is it a lack of skill or just a lack of trying? That would also be the reason why remakes of 90-tys movies is that horrible. What makes them great is hard to copy.
@matsv201
@matsv201 8 жыл бұрын
***** But that is the whole point. You really dont... well you might, i don´t, look at moves because they are perfectly made, ... you.. or at least me. looks at them because they are entertaining. They suppose to be fun to watch, and not to serous.. but just the right amount of serous. They nailed it in the 90-tys. In the 80-tys its was to comical,. in the 00 it was to serous. "Bourne or Casino Royale " eeh.. not really. Well bourne is quite good, but Casino Royal is just terrible. It lossed the esance of a action movie. Trying to make it gritty and realistic while making it even more unrealistic breaks the immersion totally. If they want a movie that looks and feel realistic, it also have to be somewhat realistic. I can live with that Die a other day and golden eye is not that realistic, because that is not really the aim for the movie, but ith Casino Royale.. no, it don´t work
@matsv201
@matsv201 8 жыл бұрын
***** "Casino Royale isn't that grounded in realism" Well, that is my problem with it. Its more unrealistic and quite a lot of the older movies.. That would not be a problem if the character and them of the movie where to... but its not. Makes it a horribel bad movie. It have the look&feel of a realistic movie... i would say Shaving ryans privat set a few year before. But it don´t really have the back ground realism. Making it a wide suspention of reality steep. Anyway. the original Casino Royal is a lot better.
@matsv201
@matsv201 8 жыл бұрын
***** Its the problem with the move. IT try to be realistic one second and totally not the other... why.... Its like they trying to do two movies at the same time, it just dont work.... well.. quite a few people fallen for it.. but i think its really horribel. Its like the second and third matrix its totaly of the hock and simultaneously they are dead series. In the first one.. well.. not really realistic, but not as bad as the others, and the story was more of a semi comedic one

Me too, it's paced poorly and edited poorly but I enjoy the story it's trying to tell more, it's about Johnny learning to heal from the death of his friend that he feels responsible for and through Bodhi he learns to let it go and live life as his own man again, it's not handled the best but I enjoyed that aspect and I wish the movie focused more on that. It also makes sense that he's an expert with sports but they really should have focused more on Utah letting go of his fear and hesitation more, we don't get enough of it.
