Nice video, I actually learned quite a bit about point cutting. Word of advice though, maybe if you're working on dark hair, wear a lighter shirt? It's kind of hard to see lol. Great vid dude

You have finally confirmed for me what I have been trying to explain to anyone who has ever cut my hair. I always ask them to please do not use thinning scissors, texturing scissors or use point cutting, as my hair is very fine yet thick. If it is not blunt cut it looks a mess and I like tidy layers. Since covid started I have been cutting my own hair(one year now) and I am getting better hair cuts than I would say 80 percent of the salon cuts I have gotten through out my life, and I am not young, LOL. Do hair dressers find it insulting when you ask them to cut your hair a certain way? I ask nicely but I am telling you I have had some horrid cuts. My hair is so easy to work with, I don't get it.

I'm with you there. I've been bouncing around numerous different hairdressers for about two years now, and although the last one talked a good game at consultation, she went on to use both thinning scissors and a razor, and bizarrely she actually began by 'cutting' the back/ bottom of my hair using a grade 8 clipper (I'm a guy, but I didn't have any kind of fade or short hair at the back, as it generally covers my ears). While she was working I was thinking: 'You're doing all the things that I've just asked you not to.' and 'Shouldn't you be using hairdressing skill to address those bits, not short-cut tools?' You expect it with a barber due to time constraints, but not from a time-served hairdresser. I'm tempted to insist on blunt-cutting next time, obviously not with that particular hairdresser though.

Same here!! I have fine hair with curls, waves and some frizz. I ALWAYS ask them not to use thinning scissors after a complete disaster hair cut. Due to the texture and how my hair dries sooo quickly 9 hairdressers out of ten leave me with wonky hair. I thought I had eventually found a hairdresser that cut my hair well, And I’ve been going to her for about 4 years now, but on the last appointment I wasn’t concentrating on what she was doing as I had a style change and she cut it from the middle of my back to shoulder length. Unfortunately after my first wash at home I knew she’d used thinning scissors. 😫😫😫 it was frizzy, split and a complete mess. This would have been easy to deal with if I’d left it longer as I’d have got it cut, but with it being shoulder length it’s just ruined my hair. I used to cut my hair all the time and looking back at photos what’s when my hair looked it’s best. I think I’m going to have to start that again! I agree that most hairdressers get offended if I ask them politely not to use thinning scissors during the consultation.

I have been searching for 6 years for someone to blunt cut my hair like my "beautiful hair stylist of 26 years but who died suddenly" did. I have gone through probably 20 hair stylist now since she passed, and have finally given up because it seems they are just not capable of blunt cutting - at all. I recently gave up and have started cutting it myself. It seems this skill is not something taught in the schools, but you explained it magnificently and understand my dilemma. I could kiss you! I don't know where you are in the states, but I would travel there to have you cut my hair! Every single hair stylist I've seen since 2016 nods their head like they understand then proceed to point cut and I go home in tears.

You would hate what I did this weekend. Got tired of the heat of my long hair, just grabbed it and attacked it with the scissors. My husband about fainted but still wouldn't help with the layers so I'm working on it as I have patience. Fortunately I have very thick fine hair and just enough curl to hide a multitude of sins. I did this once before at the beginning of Covid and had to laugh every time I received a compliment.

I have very thick curly hair and, when I lived in CA, hairdressers always layered my hair via the point cut method and I loved it. I recently relocated to the east coast and hairdressers have been layering my hair using the blunt cut method which results in too much volume. I tried to describe how I wanted it cut but was not familiar with the terminology, "point cut", which I prefer. I appreciate knowing the correct terminology and your demonstrating the difference.

Every time I ask a hairdresser for a ‘blunt’ cut, they always end up ‘point’ cutting. It is so frustrating as I have fine hair but lots of it. Why do they not understand?? This is why I have purchased my own scissors and have started doing my own hair. I am not a hairdresser. However, most these days are in such a hurry, they never do the sectioning of the hair and layer it properly. There are so many crappy, passionless hairdressers out there.

Agree 1,000%. I should start a petition to make a law banning point cutting! I'm sick of some stylists trying to push it on you. I'm here tonight because I had my hair cut today and told the stylist not to thin my hair or using texturing techniques, just a blunt cut. I have thin straight hair, but lots of it. She argued with me 3 times insisting on point cutting it. I told her I've always had a blunt cut, other than one time and I hated the point cutting technique. I had to tell her THREE TIMES not to point cut it. And then she pouted like a baby, tried to give some bogus reasons why she had to point cut it. Made zero sense what she was saying. Reply

I have naturally curly hair (that is also fine)that I like to wear straight as well, if I get it point cut, my hair goes wispy when curly with bits sticking out and when I blow dry and straighten it with irons, the wispy ends practically sizzle at the ends! I despair as I need blunt lairs ☹️ but Never get them now. No one listens and end up point cutting parts. I'm really frustrated, my hair rarely looks good after a point cut.

I'm not a stylist, I just had my very long hair cut shoulder length. I've had it this length before & it was gorgeous & blended. I love the length but the cut is terrible! I returned today to have more layering done....still not right. 😢 I have a VERY DISTINCT blunt top layer that doesn't blend in with the beautiful wavy almost curly hair underneath, I can't even scrunch it to make it look decent. 😭 I was at the store in the hair products hoping to find something to possibly enhance the top layer when a young woman & I were talking. She said she used to cut hair & what should have been done was a point cut. After watching your video....she was spot on! So thanks to her AND your video I know what has to be done. Awesome video! Two years since your video but I hope you see this comment. ❤

Your skill makes blunt cutting seem easy. I think my last hairdresser point cut because she was less accurate but it was much choppier and even though I have thick wavy hair I ended up with huge steps and holes in my hair. I then blunt cut throughout copying one of your videos on layering hair and it looks much better. It can be difficult to see what you're showing at times when you have a mannequin with dark hair against your black T-shirt.

Yes, I have had this problem with hairdressers thinning my fine hair too much and making it look much thinner with that point cutting. I did get through to an older hair dresser one time. I said, " can you blunt cut my hair when you are layering it into a short style. She seemed to be a bit puzzled but thought about it and did blunt cut my hair where she could. It was a nice haircut, my daughter said it looked good, I said "yes, it's because I asked the hair dresser to blunt cut it and it looks thicker." I do notice that a lot of hairdressers seem to default to that point cutting as though thats what they like to do. I wonder why they are not taught at hairdressing school, about cutting this way on fine hair. I got a surprise when you lifted up the head and turned it right around I had thought it was a real girl sitting there as I was focusing more on your cutting. I had to laugh.

Hello. I have fine hair and since moving away from my home town (and my stylist) I have not been able to achieve the hair texture that I like with the stylists in my new state. Often I feel stylists over texturize my hair, and it sometimes comes out looking frizzy at the ends, or thin at the ends (especially in the front), or like a series of little shards everywhere. I've been suspecting that I just haven't found the language I need to get the hair texture I want. After watching your video, I feel like I should be asking for a blunt cut. It seems like my former stylist must have blunt cut my hair, and then added some point cutting to the top to finish it off and add movement. Except, her point cutting seemed like it was kind chunky. Is that a thing, or am I full of it? Anyway, I can't figure out what she did.

Now if you have a video or 2 about angles and how to cut them , I seriously need advise for my sides now. I don't want the sides to angle like a bob, rather with my current style that is a shorter to the shoulder Cheryl Tiegs or even a blow out style of Farah Fawcett. Again thankyou.

Sometimes ( In My Opinion and 28 years experience behind the chair) point cutting is the only way to go. When u have someone with thick poker straight hair and they want layers, for the hair to flow and look blended you have to point cut. If not, u will see every cut mark and the hair won’t look blended even if it is.

In my experience as a client it is absolutely achievable to have a well cut and blended layered hair. I have had the pleasure and experience twice in my lifetime when the hairdresser was keen, willing and talented and didn't mind spending extra time blending by blunt cutting by very fine section by section. The result was fantastic, stunning...Didn't require styling. Unfortunately I moved far far away 11 years ago. The rest of the times I had my cut it is in pieces due to point cutting, thinning, etc. Hair loses the shape and is out of control, looks a mess, no amount of styling can fix it. Never found a hairdresser since who was able to blunt cut and blend at the same time. It CAN be done. People either don't have the skills or are just lazy.

Blonde fine bleached forever hair here. Personally, I feel much more feminine from feeling the weight of my hair and the way it swings wen I move my head. Those of us with fine hair have spent the entirety of our lives feeling as we have none because it HAS NO weight. Hope that helps explain why we choose blunt. 🙄 For me... it's about how it "feels" as much as the way it "looks"

Thanks for this great video, so informative!! Is a point cut healthy for the hair ends? Or will it cause split ends? Thanks so much!😀

I have straight thin hair, but lots of it, thankfully. I HATE point cutting because it makes it look like you have split ends.

I HATE point cutting . No woman wants thin straggly jagged hair . It’s impossible to style . I am so angry that hairstylists take it upon themselves to cut out the bulk when you say I want it to look fuller w long layers .

I have same problem trying to get the stylists to not point cut my hair & to blunt cut it the way I like it! What's up with that?? Seriously, does anybody have any advice or answers? Thank you in advance if you do. After all, it's OUR hair and OUR money!!!!!!!

Are you familiar with the Sahag style of cutting? (John Sahag) When I had a stylist that would cut my (fine) hair with that technique I absolutely loved my “faux-hawk!” I got so many compliments. 5x in one day haha. Now I have a different stylist and she does point cut. I do have fine hair and it just doesn’t lay quite the same. I will say my hair looks choppy if it’s a blunt cut. But that could have been the particular person who cut it back in the day.

I enjoy watching your videos, what does using a razor actually do to the hair then? Thanks for sharing Steven

I have really frizzy hair. Point cutting makes it frizzier. I like when my cut is blunt cut then a few point cuttings to take some of the bulk out. Old school.

A lot of people hating on the point cut - but dang it looks so good! Salonguy, was the pointcut how Farrah Fawcett achieved those amazing locks, you think?

Yes it looks easy when you do it working on a maniquin heagd, but trying to cut your own hair during lockdown is a whole different ball game- same thing applies to doing your own blow dry!

Thank you, I found this helpful. I would like to know what point cutting actually does to the hair shaft compared to blunt cutting, and what difference that makes to how the ends look. For example does it literally taper each individual hair a little at the ends, or does it make no difference in that sense?

Hii you’re amazing, so down to earth and really easy to listen to, i appreciate you so much My question is, if my mom has straight hair and she wants like a long pixie, she likes it short on top but not too short in the back (not a mullet lol) but almost similar with a very texturized look , would i still cut blunt lines? I’ve been point cutting her for years and it looks great for a few days then it just falls flat, she’s not the best with upkeep and products or styling and I’m sure that’s part of the problem as well, hope to hear back from you, thanks again and happy new year

Aw thx so much. I always cut blunt then go back in and add the texture after. Point cutting to me misses parts of the hair that need to be cut which is why I never do it.

My hair is SUPER fine and thin. I’ve been going to the same hair dresser for 5 years and I finally decided to do the “big chop”. I had 9 inches cut off and he point cut 2-3 INCHES in on some sections. Like a true zig zag on my ends. I’ve had a blunt cut layer bob before and my hair actually looked thick then. Now it looks terrible and lays even flatter. 😢I’m wearing it in a clip every day until I can find someone new that can actually understand this concept. Salons did when I had my bob in the 2010 time frame so I don’t know what’s changed…

I cut my own hair because I've only ever found two good stylists--most either ruin my hair or trim around the edges which I can do myself for free. It's fine, thick and shows every cut so I mostly point cut. The schools need to improve their training, imho.

I have a question. What about when you are cutting your hair short? Isn't it too choppy looking to cut blunt layers for a pixie cut?

I wish a I had known about this video yesterday. Woman was just taking her scissors and clipping at random along with point cutting. I now know to ask for a blunt cut and for them to put down their thinning shears which ruins my hair and it's thin enough.
