4 things to do - Point Loma San Diego including Cabrillo National Monument
After a tour of Ocean Beach- we head South to explore Point Loma. Point Loma offers the best views in San Diego. This is a peninsula on the southern tip of San Diego.
Our first stop on Point Loma is the Rosecrans National Cemetery. This cemetery covers 77 acres on both sides of the road and offers incredible views of the San Diego Bay as well as the Pacific Ocean. The cemetery was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1932 and has several memorials throughout the park.
Next we enter the Cabrillo National Monument located at the southernmost part of Point Loma San Diego. The Cabrillo National Monument is $20 per vehicle to enter and open daily from 9am-5pm. The bayside trail closes at 4:00 pm and the tide pools close at 4:30. The America the Beautiful National Park Pass is accepted here.
We start by visiting the Point Loma Tide Pools. This is the first turn off to the right after entering Cabrillo National Monument. The sign might say "parking lot full", but people are coming and going all day so it's easy to find a spot when someone leaves. The best time to visit the tidepools is during the fall and winter months, when they great low tides during park hours. During spring and summer on Point Loma, the tide is usually covering the tidepools when the park is open. The tide pools were not fully exposed during our visit.
Next, we stop at Cabrillo National Monuments Visitor Center. This area celebrates the exploration of California by the Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo. The park rangers were out giving a show and tell of tools and weapons used during the period of the conquistadors. Be sure and step out behind the park store for incredible views of San Diego Bay. The statue of Cabrillo was replaced in 1988 after the marine conditions degraded the original statue.
We then walked up to the Point Loma Old Lighthouse. This lighthouse operated on Point Loma for 36 years starting in 1855. This was the highest lighthouse, but the weather on the top of Point Loma was not conducive to Lighthouse operations as it was often foggy and cloudy. The Point Loma lighthouse has been moved to a lower elevation and the original lighthouse is now a museum. Not only was this a lighthouse, but the family that operated it lived there as their home.
