I got into an interesting discussion about this recently, and someone suggested it's a cultural thing. Brits really do enjoy quizzes and games and aren't quite as motivated to watch by big prizes as Americans, whereas it often takes a large jackpot to get us to tune in.

@@Subangelis I'm an old American, and I remember the original Jeopardy! in which if you came away with $2000, you were a major winner. I guess inflation has done its thing since then so that $2000 back then would be ~$15,000 today, but that's still a very small prize for a game show; in the original version of Jeopardy!, the main idea was the fun of playing the game rather than for the money.

It's made by the BBC, which is funded by public money through the TV license. They can't therefore have massive jackpots. If you'll recall though, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was originally produced in England by ITV, and they regularly gave away huge sums of money.

£20,000 should be baseline for the cash prize. £1000 is absolutely pitiful. Especially considering what the contestants have to go through in that final round. £1000 is a month's wages for a lot of people in Britain. What the Hell can you do with a grand these days? Not a lot!

It is everyday bro. Also, the BBC is publicly funded - with the stupid shit I've heard people complain about their taxes going towards it wouldn't surprise me that people would get extremely pissed off if the BBC were throwing 20k a week at a game show. _Uhhh b-but Chris Evans,_ as if people bat an eyelid when their money goes into the pockets of rich people. As soon as that money goes into the pockets of "nobodies" people flip their shit. That is just how the world works.

A bit unfair to call British gameshows miserly. Granted until the early 1990s there were limits on ITV (The BBC have always been a little more austere as its publicly funded), but the gameplay has always taken precedence over the cash in most cases.

Despite the fact that Pointless on BBC goes head-to-head with The Chase on ITV every weekday afternoon at 5:00, it's still a great show and I do think it deserves to come here to America! We've already got The Chase so why not get Pointless! I'm sure it would have to be a daytime or syndicated show because it has an accumulating jackpot. I think the jackpot should start at $5,000 and go up by that much each show until it is won plus $1,000 for each Pointless answer that the contestants find along the way.

+JH Robbins. The reason why many game show prizes are lower in the UK is because they are made by the BBC which is publically funded (by a licence which currently costs £145.50 a year, which is mandatory to everyone with no opt-out but that's another debate) and has no commercials, so they spend the money on what they consider more important things like executives pay (around $200,000 pa), although in theory content has to be more balanced to appeal to everyone so there is less trash TV; a game show like Pointless has to be entertaining rather than be about money. Shows made by ITV like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire typically have prizes comparable with American game shows, one example being The Price Is Right which I think is an American import game show about big money prizes and little else. Deal Or No Deal is a dreadful game show (although interestingly produced by Richard Osman), like Millionaire without the questions and more waffle, is presented by a bearded cunt who recently pretended he was going to buy the BBC.

I don't understand a couple of things about the scheduling of Pointless. I watch it on BBC's iPlayer so I am watching basically re-runs. I did watch this particular season... until the show immediately preceding this one... then they never showed this episode! I guess that really is not a question but a complaint. My other question is how is the show scheduled? They never say: "This is the last show of the season. We will be back in x months...". At the end of one season, what happens with the contestants that have only had one try? The third question is about the prize. Did both of these contestants win 20,225 or do the divide that between the two?
@TheUKNutter8 жыл бұрын
I think the prize got pointless bankrupt haha. It's shared between the two because they're a couple
@Kyrelel6 жыл бұрын
The show has a £1000 base prize for every episode, so a £20,000 win is the same as if £1000 had been won on the previous 19 shows. No chance of them being bankrupt.

20k pounds = $31,600 dollars. Jeopardy regularly gives this amount away generally over a 2 day span (but quite often daily). Why are English game shows so miserly? I think I remember something about a law, maybe?
@rohan53028 жыл бұрын
This game show is POINTLESS because the amount of money you win is shit for example that person won £20,000 and the next game goes down to a stupid £1,000 And also when answering questions people are put in order of answering so people don't get a fair chance to answer what they know

How the f** are we supposed to play when we can't see the questions? But the BIGGEST gripe I have is how the GAME IS FIXED for certain couples to get through to the final ; I always guess who's in the final and has anyone noticed how often they get a subject they are 'expert' on? What a f***ing fixed scam.
