I am a 64 year old man , and I have always loved them ! They came from the spheres. Even in the 60s and 70s, they were out of step with the times. Why ? Because they possessed a kind of innocence which is incorruptible. Sometimes, we thought, oh, that's not cool. We had the Stones, the Who, Led Zep, Deep Purple. But then you listened to the Moody Blues and it was like being under the unfurled wings of an angel ! The older you get , the more meaningful and beautiful their music becomes. God is love and that's what we, like The Moody Blues, prized above all: "... That's what the War of Love is for," they sang. And they were sincere about it ... which allows God to enter and dwell in us, and put holy words and feelings celebrating His love and valor in our songs and poetry, straight from the heart. Christ came to me in the depth of the Sierra Nevada wilderness when I went across the country in pursuit of gentle people with flowers in their hair. Indeed "Your going men will dream dreams." Im 70 and I was about to post something similar. Days of Future Past was the first album I owned that blew me away, and it’s where my love for the mellotron started. The combination of the Moodies vocals with the flute and mellotron created music that took you on a journey. Looking back, it's incredible to think that the orchestral interludes were written, recorded, and added to the main songs in under a week. Hearing these live versions is a revelation to hear how good they were live at this early stage. In Seatch of the Lost Chord was even better and my favorite album of theirs. I saw them in concert a few times with bands like Procol Harum and Jethro Tull. Legend of a Mind (Timothy Leary's Dead) always brought the house down.

Graham Edge was a great drummer, I love Mike Pinder's dig at the start with the question about the dickie bows and Ringo! ha ha! Love Mike and the Melotron. The Moodies were never quite the same after Mike left, but they were all great in their own right. Good job by all as always! Each had their talents and unique voices which made them great. 5 men that could all play and sing and write songs and perform them as a band, respecting and enjoying and performing each others songs. You don't see that these days at all.

I love the Moody Blues, but like any group, they fit perfectly in their time slot. Justin Hayward wasn't ahead of his time. He arrived just in time on the music scene to help combine rock and orchestra during the 1960's, which Jon Lord had done with Deep Purple. And that time period was experimental for all forms of music from The Turtles to Gary Puckett and The Union Gap to The Beatles and The Nice to The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Every band and person fit neatly into their time slot. Even groups like The Bubble Puppy and The Electric Prunes appeared on the music scene at the right time. Nobody were ahead of their time.

@@Trux004 Who did symphonic concept albums before these guys? Led by Hayward, they broke barriers and were indeed ahead of the pack. They predated Yes. They released Days of Future Past BEFORE Shades of Deep Purple was released. With the lone exception of A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum, Hayward and the Moodies are the banner carrier of Symphonic Rock as well as the concept album. And Hayward is one of the greatest songwriters in Rock history. He didn't need to use covers of Joe South and Neil Diamond to make his initial splash.

Certainly a gem...but( oh dear there's that word) The camera crew should have been more familiar with these songs perhaps from a proper listening to the album or from a pre performance rehearsal to highlight some the members solo embellishment i.e. Rays flute solo on Nights..and Justin's lead Vocals. Oh for those days to return again!! Despite the problems with the antiquated sound system (so typical of those days) and a few blips by the band here and there,Ray fooling around with the flute in the days before he became really proficient on that instrument, with even Justin making a mistake on Nights, this video is pure gold. Watching the guys from 1968 makes me realize just how lucky we were to be able to have such incredibly talented musicians in one band. The compare makes me smile, he sits on a shelve above the band as they perform and gives the impression of being so laid back. Well it was in those days and that is why I think we were really privileged also to enjoy such a wonderful time when money didn't really influence our decisions as much as our love of music and the power of love.

Aside from Tuesday Afternoon and Nights, there is Peak Hour which has such a fantastic energy of it's own. Years before Queen or Pink Floyd came about, the Moody's had already created the sound! Liking Lodges contributions more and more... after 54 years of listening to them! Funny how in the beginning they were about Cover Songs and standards and then they became the standard. I just looked at set lists from their concerts and Justin has been singing 'Tuesday Afternoon' and 'Nights In White Satin' in every concert since 1970. Not that this means anything but it just struck me how that must get, I dunno, numbing after a while ? A half century. And everytime I've heard him sing these hes always been spot on. I know, Jagger / 'Satisfaction' and so on but they are mainly flat out rock songs where no one would notice if he was off a little. Theres no 'being off a little' with 'Tuesday...', you better be on your toes. I only saw them live once back in the early '00's but no matter, I was so thrilled ! Great seats too, right up at the stage. I first heard them with Laine in '64. WHY am I rambling on like this ? I guess after all these years I still get psyched up listening to them, SO many memories !

What great songs they wrote and for the group to last longer than the Beatles but it took till 2018 to get the recognition they deserved. FYI, Patrick Moran's real last name is Moraz. I saw them on tour of "The Present" in 1984, and Mr. Moraz was playing 4, yes, FOUR, instruments at one time! WOW! Tuesday Afternoon (starts about 6 minutes)was just awesome to hear at this stage, then hear them say on a 45, lol and play nights. Band members must love coming on here to hear these and have it take them right back to the moment and think about what was going through their heads, must be very special to them. great video

What a fantastic performance they gave. They were so young, beautiful, and full of life, passion, and energy. I have loved this band for many years as i grew up. 60s and 70s music is truly fantastic, but the Moodies cut deep into my psyche. Edge on the drums is amazing here, too. Pure power and a great tone. True 1960s vibe ❤

Gabriele -- John is a very good bass player, yes. Excellent singer?--- no. Passable at best. His vibrato is bad, his pitch is off at times, and he doesn't keep a good tone when going to the high register.

His lead vocal in Peak Hour from this video is one of his best I'd say, especially in the middle section, when he sings "I found ooouuut". Pretty great for learning how to sing while playing the bass...

You gotta admit, though, that Lodge's falsetto backing vocals really add something to some of the band's songs. His regular singing voice is weak: you'll notice they double his vocals with someone else a lot.

Yeah, right John, it's all about Peak Hour & the sun being high in the sky! I went with my adult daughter 2 years ago for their 50th tour and heard them do the day "trip" theme for the whole show , along with Richard Burton videos narrating from "War of the Worlds" Started with Morning is the Day & ending " with Nights" What is really good about this is that it was very early & they weren't even into their "2nd" fame yet so had a gentle kind of home grown mannerism.

Love this this trio of classics! I so love how all these rare clips turn up on KZbin! I especially enjoyed the banter over the technical difficulties. I even liked it where, toward the end of NIWS, the guys messed up a bit. Ah the joys of LIVE television. Today many acts play to prerecorded tracks and maybe only one guitar is actually "live." This was an honest performance with no tracks.

Nights in White Satin was written by Justin Hayward when he was 17 and has proven through time to be a Classic of the Moody Blues !!!

Robert Walters actually he wrote it in 1967, he turned 21 on Oct 14, 1967.

Krischedler, actually Justin wrote Nights in White Satin in 1966, just a few weeks after he met his wife, which was only a few weeks after he joined the Moodies.

@@TallyRocky ... I have heard Justin go back and forth on how old he was, I think he forgets in his older age.. I would go with 20 years of age, since he joined the band in, I believe November of 1966 when he was already 20, and they started recording the album in the autumn of 1967 when he was 20, the album was released just over a month after his 21st birthday. In those days, the album was released almost immediately after recording... I know that both Pinder and Hayward speak about their interplay during the composing of the songs, so you know it has to be sometime Autumn of 1967. That would make Hayward almost certainly 20 years old when he wrote it... I suppose he could have had the song in his bag even earlier than 1967, so 19 could be correct.

I absolutely love this video. Great musicians, not a great PA system at this venue or great audio-engineering support. However, the Moody's shine through the setbacks and seize the day brilliantly. I love the humour of more innocent days before the suits took over the music industry. Still one of my favourite bands of all time. Love these guys.
