Thank you for acknowledging the Grave Domain as one of the BEST subclasses in the game! One of my go-to one shot/campaign characters is a grave domain cleric themed around the Hispanic culture of death and the Day of the Dead. His deity is a goddess of life and joy and his whole philosophy is “live your life to the fullest; live a life to be remembered”! Cleric is one of the few classes with Paladin and maybe Warlock where you can realistically have a full party made from entirely variations of this class and it would still kind of mechanically function (though I'll say that none is as broken as a party made 100% of Rogue in a social/mystery centric campaign, like holy shit do half of these subclasses force you to consider very carefully or else they will break the campaign, so imagine having both Sherlock Holmes, Agent 47, Inspector Gadget and a ghost whisperer walk into your intrigue)

Guidance being like sprinkling allies with moondust is awesome. That 300 ft of darkvision driving GM crazy, Twilight Sanctuary keeping the party alive. I just love everything about this subclass, it's the most diverse as well. You can play it like a paladin, with all the auras and channel divinity standing always in the middle. You can play it more sneaky with all advantages and passive abilities activating in the darkness. You can play as just a buffer/debuffer. You can play as regular healer. Or... ditch the shield and take glave/halberd instead and play a the reaper.

Yeah gonna be honest Mercedes is very suspiciously the "Baby punching villain" trope, where a villain is actually the good guy but has a dumb caveat that invalidates what they stand for. And thus whatever good points they have are never addressed by the (usually more privelaged) heroes. Examples of this are Killmonger (MCU), Sylas (LoL), Riddler (The Batman), Butterflies (Peacemaker), etc... Gonna be honest as much as I love the content the implications of this trope and Mercedes being "evil" are really disappointing. Like this is just a DnD character concept and not some high budget film that'll influence society or anything so it isn't a big deal, but the trope is still just really dumb and problematic that I just hate seeing all the dang time. Standing up to oppression and actually doing what's necessary to root out said oppression is NOT EVIL.

Recently made a multiclassed Warlock Grave cleric with an Undead patron. Now, she's not some edgy sad brooding character, she's actually a very bubbly young woman with a very nice demeanor and great listening ability! That's because she comes from a family of morticians, her father being the owner of the family business. Which is precisely why she doesn't like the undead, because she believes that what is dead should be able to rest in peace, and she's really not fond of the local Necromancy students coming to their graveyard to find corpses to experiment on. She left her home to seek adventure when she met with a lost ghost in the graveyard while she was making her rounds fixing graves and refreshing flowers, as well as checking for signs of intrusing. The ghost didn't remember anything from his previous life, and didn't even know his own name, only that a nearby medallion used to be very important to him. So, being the serviceable young lady she is, she offered to help him find his memory and identity to help him leave to the other side. They made a pact, and the ghost helps her as well as he can. Her parents didn't see it as evil play, the terms of the pact were clear, and, as former adventurers themselves (her dad was a grave cleric himself, coming from that family of morticians and stopped adventuring when his own father retired, and her mum was a sorceress, and they were part of the same party), they were in fact happy she would go on an adventure on her own before she would have to take on the family business. They helped her prepare her backpack, gave her a sending stone and some paper and ink, and there she left, with her ghost in tow seeking for adventure. I found it funny to think that she didn't inherit her mother's magic, but still received some abilities, such as seeing and talking to ghosts, and though she has a very nasty scar on her left eye, it was merely an accident when she was a child. Now she does all she can to defend life and help the undead, all the while getting boosts from her ghost patron. ^^ And I love her!!

Mercedes reminded me of a cleric character concept I had and a hypothetical scene I imagined for them. The idea was a lizardfolk that plays into the lore of “no compassion true neutral completely amoral” that lizardfolks have. They don’t care about people, only prioritize their own survival, but they’re smart and they realize that they can grow stronger and be surrounded by strong allies by becoming an adventurer. They want to have their party prioritize keeping them alive, so the obvious solution is become the healer, everyone knows that you keep the healer alive no matter what, so they became a cleric (also getting a free ticket into heaven when they eventually do die makes the deal all the sweeter). Part of making sure their party wants to keep them alive is also winning their affection, so they’re super nice and friendly because that makes them likable which means people care enough to keep them safe. They keep an innocent act that they’d almost never break since even if it seems beneficial in the moment to go full heartless cruel/betrayal mode they know that in the long run never giving their party a reason to see them as a bad guy is the best decision, so they would almost always be played as lawful good despite being true neutral. I did however imagine a moment of them interrogating someone with no one to witness them and imagined they’d go full evil and start eating the flesh of the person they’re interrogating and making them watch only to heal the wounds right after leaving no evidence and allowing the torture to continue if that wasn’t horrific enough to make the person spill their guts, so hearing Mercedes’ similar torture methods reminded me of that.

Turns out the kobolds saw the sewers as a perfect place to live, with both shelter and a steady food supply. So the humans made a deal with the kobolds, they could live in the sewers if they promised to keep the place maintained, and even agreed to throw in some bonus food like old ham bones and food scraps to help feed them. Every other race on the planet thinks that humanity are fools for trusting kobolds, but the deal seems to be working for the two races.

I have this image of a cleric of creation that's themed as a maid or butler of sorts, they always present their summoned creations in a platter or if it's bigger than they could hide they go somewhere to "retrieve" it, coming back seconds later, think Janet from the good place, their summoning of walls could be flavored as them "tyding up" reality, by turning cave walls into lavish palace walls, and creating statues, vanisters, stairs, and such, and the envoys could be painted as them calling for reinfocements, as a crowd of tinier maids and pages to follow the cleric's commands, like, an envoy of harm could be one crowd stampeeding the enemy, the envoy of healing could be like a crowd gathering around the target as if they were cleaning them up for an event, and an envoy of protection could be a crowd running from one place to another in a hurry as if they were preparing something, obstructing the path of the enemy with furniture and their general prescence, I just like the chaotic and almost incidental imagery, and the juxtaposition of this refined and collected person just bringing a frantic gaggle wherever they go, and the idea of the exalted envoy being another crowd just twice the size as usual is kinda funny. Pandora's palace by toby fox's vibes.

I used Healing Word when somebody hit zero HP and spent the rest of my time very effectively blowing shit up - a perfect balance of activities, IMO. Cleric is indeed a delight to play.

Just wanna take a moment and say Pointy Hat made lore for Wyrmwood. I love it. Also..clerics are neat.

That wyrmwood spot was amazing. While knowing it is an advisement it was soaked in lore that is right out the mytho of our hearts and minds.

I’m here for the queer representation in DnD. Also, this person is hands down one of the most unique contributors to this space, full stop. Nothing but praise, I watch all the videos multiple times bc they are so packed full of good content, puns, and gifs. #gaydnd #badatmath #kataya

Pointy Hat, you should check out Emily Axeford in Dimension 20 and not another dnd podcast. I feel like what the two of you do with characters is akin to harmonic convergence. 😂😂 it’s incredible

this video is very helpful and entertaining! i'm making a grave cleric for my friend's campaign, who's a plague doctor slowly being killed by the very disease they aim to destroy, the one destroying the world. i think i'm gonna enjoy playing a very dark, and frankly pretty self-centered character when i'm a healer

Loved the NPC idea. Me and some friends did a cleric team into Avernus, and on making them, we talked about a Trickery domain cleric using the Light cantrip on a vial to make it appear to be a Potion of Healing, only to be really filled with toilet water and wyvern poison.

My first character was a Cleric! He's still one of my favorites to re-use. Thank you for the great video!

I just discovered your channel and love it. Cleric is also my favorite class. I don't understand why the best class is so slept on. ;) My only biased complaint is that I wish you covered tempest cleric more because it's so darn fun.

I play a tiny Owlin Twilight Cleric, and it's been so good in the campaign story line as well as with the party make-up. With Twilight domain's Channel Divinity "Twilight Sanctuary" (1 minute, 30 foot radius dome centered on you and moves with you) you can choose to give temp hit points or end a charm/frighten effect when a creature ends its turn in the dome radius. It's been a lot of fun so far, several sessions in, and I see many opportunities for it to continue being fun.

I love playing a twilight drow cleric of eilistraee. They are the warrior type cleric using dex and wisdom to fight with longswords and cast spells. Clerics can be absolutely anything you want them to be, they are amazing

Cleric is one of my favorite classes up there with fighter (which I find fun because it is a challenge to figure out things to do outside of combat) and druid (because I love their subclasses and spells). My favorite subclass of cleric is the Peace Domain because its signature ability encourages teamwork within the party and it allows you to ask play the healer role without being as dedicated to it as Life Domain. As a result you can play a more balanced character who can heal on one turn and blast on the next turn while your allies (and maybe yourself) get benefits from helping each other out.

In the place that I live D&D is something that no one even knows about so I played CRPGs inspired by D&D because I was interested, first I made a barbarian and honestly I was bored then the next time I made a character I made them into a cleric, I could engage in combat like a fighter and I could use spells, and so far cleric is my favorite class.

My favorite character I've ever made was a cleric with no direct gods. He was an old(er) monster hunter that had collected recipes for elixirs and old blessed idols and trinkets to use for rituals and spellcasting. He was a more a Belmont than a cleric. So much fun trying to explain and justify my spells!

I've got to say: while so far all the characters/monsters/subclasses you've made were great, Mercedes is on another level. Her reasoning is understandable, her goals are quite noble, but damn if she's not creepy as hell. I'd say she walks a line between a anti-villainous well-intented extremist and dark, pragmatic antihero and can easily be played both ways. I feel her like a combination between John Dee from Netflix's Sandman and Grand Inquisitor from The Brothers Karamazov in a package of soft-spoken devout nun. The kind of person that would introduce herself by preaching peace and unity and begin each interrogation by detailed description of everything she will do to victim, all in the same princess-like soft voice and with a nice smile on her face. Man, am I impressed!
