What I also love about the grave cleric is how versatile the theming can be. Just look at Caduceus from CR to see a much less goth interpretation that still feels totally in tune with what makes this subclass so great.

Hi I just want to gush about my newer character: The grave cleric I have is meant to be to Naralis Analor, an elven god of protecting Elven life and passing it on to the grave. He's a new character is a wood elf with a want to see his Dark Elf wife inside of her afterlife, and has to be partial to elves on the way there for his god.

One of my favorite PCs I've played is a lawful neutral grave cleric. The character concept was a mix of undertaker and guardian angel. He worshiped two gods who worked together, mother Raven and father crow. He would comfort the dying in their final moments and say a prayer. The prayer is him calling out to his gods which would be. "Father crow attends to the fallen, and mother Raven sings their final rites." Everyone would be able to hear the loud cawing of millions of crows and ravens all around but can never see them.

That pantheon is dope. Could i adopt it for a concept? Would work really well with a Mercy monk monk, grave cleric build i habe in mind. I like the duality of it and they can wear the mask of one with the monk flavor feature you get. Minds already comming up with ways to incorporate it.

My character is a Grave Cleric of Umberlee, because what grave is larger than the Oceans? His job is to make sure only one person survives accidents at sea, and that the sole surviver knows his life was spared because Umberlee demands they spread word of what happened, especally if they thought they were protected by another God like Selune. It's really fin just being an old jaded fisherman with a Trident Spiritual Weapon and Shark Spiritual Guardians swimming around him.

I love the cleric of the grave so much. Tldr: "My job is to save you from Death, not keep you from dying" I've played two so far: Anub'baku Attorney at Deaths Door, a humanoid jackal that's part of a secret society that exists to make sure important people don't die before they accomplish fulfilling their world saving destiny. His spells were voiced as legal motions aimed at playing the gods off each other: like reducing a critical hit to normal damage by yelling "objection" and that it wouldn't be fair in the spirit of 'the grand game' or to the other gods spectating for X god's champion to just wipe out Y gods prophetic party before they even can get some mud on their boots. Brother Granite, a quiet and solemn Dwarf in a world where becoming a grave cleric means becoming conscious of all the joyous potential of life entering the world while also being burdened with consciousness of the tidal wave of premature and wrongful death flooding over it, and knowing that they merely have a bucket to combat it. Hence few care to join and fewer have the resolve to bear being ordained. All the members are steadfast as mountains in their intentions, yet those who only knew of them in passing would say they were devoid of personality due to blank expressions and terse speech. To the point that even humans who join the order develop the thousand yard stare and placid temperament of an elf that is close to living their life through to it's natural end.... Had a lot of fun with using very few words while sneaking in a bunch of subtle/understated dry humor to create a vibrant personality underneath the veil of solemnity.

While very MAD, a Grave Cleric multiclass can be fun as either a support _squishy protector_ with a Armourer Artificer using Thunder gauntlets to force disadvantage on any who go after the Wizards ect instead of you. Or just for flavour mix with a necromancy Wizard for some toughness. Also take inspirating leadership as a perk and give _your_ undead a pep talk before a fight ... that has great role-playing potential.

I recently started my first campaign as a player (I've been DMing for a couple years) and I chose a topaz dragonborn grave cleric as my first pc. Holy moly this subclass lets you do so much from a flavour point of view, I tried to not go into the classic goth territory and istead giving him more of a calm a "respectful of nature's order" aura. And yes, it was certainly inspired by Mister Clay

Grave Cleric is one of my favorite subclasses period. I'm currently playing one in Dragonlance and am having a really great time doing it, though ironically while my character is a gravekeeper and undertaker, she's actually a pretty nice gal who isn't really morbid. She just knows a lot about taking care of the dead, has seen basically dealt with the end result of every one of the 'Dumb Ways to Die' at one point or another as a mortician, and will freaking end you if you take an innocent life. Mechanically, it's really fun overall, with my party getting plenty of milage out of Path To the Grave pretty much every single time we've used it, and while Sentinel hasn't come up yet, when it does I'm sure it'll be clutch. The Domain Spells are honestly underrated in my opinion, as you get three 'Cleric Tax' spells in Revivify, Death Ward, and Raise Dead, meaning you have more flexibility than a Cleric who lacks those. Circle of Mortality makes me feel good when I bring someone back up with a huge amount of hitpoints. This subclass is awesome.

All of the cleric domains are really good jumping off points to build characters with good ideas to build out from for backstory but I feel the grave cleric definitely does it the best. The cleric concept I have in mind when I next get to play in a group and the group doesnt have a healer is a detective who focuses her work on investigating murders, using her divine powers to ease the soul of the one who's life was taken and try to help find whoever disturbed the natural passage of life. (EDIT I AM NOW PLAYING THIS CHARACTER AND THIS SUBCLASS IS SO FUN I USED PATH TO THE GRAVE ON A BANDIT TRYING TO FLEE THE BATTLE AND THEN TEH RANGER GOT A HUNTER'S MARKED CRIT ON HIM IMMEDIATELY AFTER FOR 38 DAMAGE AT LEVEL 3, YES IT TOOK TWO ACTIONS AND SOME RESOURCES TO SET UP BUT LIKE IT WAS SO COOL)

Literally my best character worked for about 4 years now is a dwarf grave cleric. A war veteran with traumas that force him to act well in order to silence the guilt he carries from feeling responsible for the deaths of his friends and comrades, turning him into someone who tries to help and advise everyone around him. 5:20 error, the channel specifies that they can only be ATTACKS, not saves

grave clerics, disciples of the 'last companion' ... to them, death is not to be feared, they speak to it's embodiment, literally. he is the last friend many will ever have, the one who takes their final journey with them, ensuring that even in the worst of times, no-one is truly alone. people are still scared of them, no one likes to be reminded that they are mortal, but they understand... then they meet sentient undead attempting to break the cycle.. and the gloves come off.

The myth behind the image of the 2 Japanese gods at 1:35 when you said shinigami is a great story. That’s Izanagi and Izanami. They are creator deities and that photo represents them creating the islands of Japan with Izanami plunging his spear into the ocean. Later Izanami dies while giving birth to the god of fire (he literally burns her to death on the way out). In a rage Izanagi kills his son and travels to the underworld, Yomi no Kuni to bring his wife out. He finds her but doesn’t fully see her and they make the agreement that is prevalent in many of these myths. She will follow him out but he cannot look at her until they are both out of the underworld. At some point he can’t contain himself and looks. He sees her dead and rotting. He then panics and runs out of the cave leading to the underworld. She sends her servants the shikome and Raijin (or Raiden pronounced like the character from metal gear rising, not mortal kombat) after him. Izanagi seals the cave with a huge bolder that Izanami can’t move. She screams saying she will flatline 1000 humans a day because of him. He retorts that he will create 1500 a day. So in essence she was a creation goddess at first but ended up the ruler of the underworld.

As a homebrew afficiando, I urge to tell my cleric type players to use the piety system. In which certain actions or choices can gain or lose piety points. Piety points come from Theros Campaign and it's one my favorites due to greek mythos. Anywho I also tell my clerics to pick a god respectfully. As this can ultimately better the role playing aspect. Example Erebos the God of Death in Theros uses a whip. I allow if players use a whip they automatically gain a plus one. As any whip they use automatically channels death or necrotic damage. It's the same for any god, certain items, actions or natural events can bolster their characters. To ensure this doesn't become overpowered. I create NPC of the opposite alignment as antagonist. I actually I do this for every player. By creating anti-players it keeps my players on edge. If they defeat the anti-player they are rewarded with an +3 item. Then each time they spare them the anti-player will become stronger. Thus increasing teh rarity of the item as well usher more experience and any reward they can muster.

This is hilarious. I don’t necessarily play a full grave cleric, it’s a multi class I took in because of story stuff. I started as a swarmkeeper ranger. What does this have to do with why it’s hilarious my character now has grave cleric levels? Well….my character is basically a living tombstone you could say. Earth genasi so earth elemental technically but her story is that she is a statue in an old temple brought to life by the fragmentary souls of the dead who gather there. Those same souls are the swarm who surround her. So yeah, she is a waking tombstone. Weirdly enough though, I gave her clothes that are more of a faded yellow than anything that comes off gothic or anything. It’s pretty interesting if you ask me.

Vampiric Touch is bad because concentration is really easy to break and it takes your entire Action to use. It's a melee ability, meaning you're more likely to get hit and therefore more likely to lose concentration. Its damage is also very lackluster, especially once you take the reduction in DPR from miss chance (it _is_ an Attack roll) into account. I know the self-heal is supposed to make up for the low damage, but even that is pretty low, and the enemies can just focus fire on you to make you lose concentration (or, you know, go down), or focus fire everyone else on your party. All in all, Vampiric Touch just doesn't reduce the incoming damage fast enough to be worth the investment of your action economy.

real quick when you mention path to the grave you do not mention that it does double damage for all damages done not just the initial so for instance if you have a paladin with some smites ready it can be quite spicy also if that person gets a crit at the same time it goes from *2 to *4.

Theres a death domain cleric in the dungeon Masters guide book, alongside the oathbreaker paladin. Grave domain was added in xanathars iirc. Easy confusion to make!
