What is now Israel was the region of Palestine, from 1917 to 1937, under the British Mandate. Before that it was Ottoman empire territory and it was called South Syria. There have been many names for the place. The Romans way back referred to as the area as Syria Palestina. But these were all names of an area, a region. When area was under British mandate 1917-1947, to say you were a Palestinian would be like saying you were a European or an Asian. The roots that people claim as Palestinians, that they are somehow related to the Philistines, cannot be true because the Philistines ceased to exist 604 BC. They lived 12th century BC to 604 BC and then were no more. Also true of claims of being related to the Canaanites. They lived from 3500 BC- 1150 BC. But it's actually a mute point whether or not there were family lines of people living in the area for thousands of years. The bottom line is there was a war in 1948 and Israel won so the land belongs to Israel, no matter how far back families who live there were there.
