I just remembered an episode of the show from when it just started on KidsWB, "The Problem With Paras" that had an even easier option: just have opponents throw the fight. A girl named Cassandra wants her Paras to evolve to make a miracle medicine, but it's too timid to fight, so Ash AND Team Rocket throw fights against it, which *does* give it the experience/confidence boost to finally evolve. Ash and his friends could've literally evolved their whole teams by just taking dives for each other.

Contrast that with the episode after the Cerulean gym, where a guy whips his Pokémon, puts them in restraints, makes his Sandshrew swim in said restraints, and barely gives them any breaks. Not only does this make his Sandshrew so powerful that he won 100 consecutive matches, but they made a huge point that it still loves him and Ash was wrong to say his methods are messed up.

@@spongecakes1986 well, he doesn't whip his _pokemon,_ rather he's trained them to respond to the crack of the whip so he can issue commands faster than he can speak 'em. the restraints are also just standard training equipment - hell, the macho brace item in the games are the same sort of thing, and it's used for ev training - and making a sandshrew swim ... isn't really that big of a deal. they're based on the pangolin, after all, and pangolins are perfectly happy to swim. sandshrew _are_ explicitly said to dislike water, but that's because their hide softens when moist and that's naturally a pretty dangerous situation in the wild. under the care and supervision of a trainer, though, it ain't exactly like there's anything _dangerous_ about it, not any more than having any non-aquatic pokemon perform swimming exercises anyhow it's stuff that could still be too much to force onto a pokemon, certainly, but that's where you gotta factor in the fact that pokemon have the same diversity of personalities as humans do. find a pokemon with a fiery passion for self-improvement and competition, and it'll be more than happy to undergo daily intensive training as long as it's being properly fed and cared for during the downtime. ain't like athletic pride is limited to fighting types, after all

To be fair, the fight that ended up triggering its evolution was a serious one where it managed to eke out a win against Ash's Charmeleon, who at this point was refusing to listen to him and ignored the command to let Paras win. One could argue that the experience boost it gained from defeating a Pokemon that was not only of an opposing type but also a full evolution stage ahead of it was enough to trigger its own evolution all at once.

You see, what Paul fails to realise is that pokemon don't get stronger by battle, they get stronger by *winning* a battle. Meaning, for his pokemon to get stronger, he'd ironically have to let THEM beat HIM up. So far as I understand it, the setting conceit is that pokemon are intelligent enough to give consent while IRL animals are not.

​@@mizu7662yeah, Pokémon can actually refuse to battle, and even refuse to re enter their Pokéballs and run away. It's more like boxing than dog fighting (especially if you're using a Hitmonchan), just with fantasy elements and cute animals. Calling it animal abuse and dog fighting is very surface level, and shows you actually don't really pay attention to the series, especially the anime. Plus, it's cannon that some Pokémon actually used to be humans. Saying it's not consensual and abuse also completely ignores that the Pokémon can literally poison, burn, electrocute, drown, slice, crush, ect. their trainers. Pikachu himself electrocuted Ash all the time in the first few episodes and refused to enter his Pokéball. Primeape also beat up Ash before earning his trust in a literal boxing match. So yeah, beating your Pokémon and training them by battling are VERY different things
