Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch the first Steel Type Pokémon on each Route (Species Clause); This includes Pokémon that evolve INTO Steel types, but does NOT include non-Steel Pokémon that evolved from Steel types!
3. Nickname Pokémon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4 (at the START of the battle)

That Challenge Mode experiment was really interesting! It means that it’s inherently easier since the level caps are higher, which means Elesa (and Clay) could have been harder without Excadrill. Nevertheless, it was cool to see Escavalier put in work in a hardcore nuzlocke! Volcarona best Gen V Bug though; fantastic design and phenomenal stats.

Yeah, in most standard RPGs higher level enemies mean harder challenges, but in Pokemon the biggest problem you face early on are the lack of both STAB and coverage moves, so you end up being stuck using moves like Tackle or Scratch. A higher level cap means they increase the likelihood that the mons you encounter until that point have already learned good enough moves to OHKO or 2HKO the opposition with no issue.

I actually tried this exact monolocke about a month ago, and can confirm that Elesa and Clay are substantially harder in normal mode than in challenge mode.

Clay CAN be trivialized with a bit of baiting and Air Balloon strats though(plus if you wait to evolve Drilbur until Clay's cap of lv.33 it learns Earthquake early) but Elesa is a hardwall on her own. You either gotta hope Lucario is tanky enough to withstand attacks from Emolga or invest heavily in its Spd EVs so it outspeeds her team.

I heard that they actually forgot to scale the stats for Challenge and Assist Mode, so Assist Mode is just unconditionally harder than the base game, while Challenge Mode can be easier or harder for bosses on a case-by-case basis, and is just easier for trainer fights.

An idea for fixing the challenge mode issue: use the standard mode level cap. That way you can fight the buffed move sets, items and more interesting teams while still having comparable stats

@@ItsFireTiger didn't you watch all the way through the video? In challenge mode, the opponent's Pokémon's levels increase. But their stats don't. Essentially, when you're doing a hardcore Nuzlocke and challenge mode, you have an advantage because your Pokemon are actually at a higher level.

lucario is honestly insanely busted for this game. 90 based speed is enough to outspeed most things with just a little investment, early game steel typing with fighting type stab for normal and dark types, and it has a fantastic learnset. you get free ice punch, swords dance by level up, and close combat in the late game. even some of its weaker moves are situationally useful.

For the QotD: I absolutely love the bugs of Gen 5, but I will always have a soft spot for Scolipede myself, I was doing a mono-poison run in Gen 6 and found a shiny randomly. The ‘mon ended up being my highest level. Not to mention that Scolipede has a surprising amount of coverage.

My personal favorite Gen 5 bug type is Galvantula. I'm a big fan of spiders, personally, so it's great. I do a lot of macro photography of them, and I honestly find spiders rather cute. It's pre-evo is absolutely adorable and an electric tarantula is so badass and adorable that I cant help but love that little guy, Scolipede 100% scores 2nd place from it's pure badassery alone. Would've been neat if you allowed genning in a dream radar pokemon, I often allow one in my b2w2 nuzlockes for the sake of early game variety. You could get bronzor or beldum, though with their hidden ability. I like Escavalier Edit: god, I knew the level cap difference could make the difference between easy and normal modes, but thst revelation completely changes everything for challenge mode as well. I did a nuzlocke on "easy" mode earlier this year to explore how the level cap difference changes things, but wow, that means I was at more of a disadvantage than I thought.

qotd: definitely accelgor, Me First was their signature move back in the day and I loved using in pvp with the 1.5x dmg boost before it was dexited, even then it's still very fun to use in competitive with throat spray bug buzz, spikes/toxic spikes or for some niche support in doubles with fast encore, stroogle booge, acid spray and even fun water shuriken for funny palossand gimmicks. It's also just extremely bad ass looking bug in general.

While I think Escavilier has the best design of the Unova bugs, my favourite at this point has to be leavanny due to a nuzlocke I was doing of W2, wherein my leavanny Mary wound up carrying the team through the mid game when we were in tight spots. By the time we made it to Undella town, she had officially earned the nickname Bloody Mary. Unfortunately I got into a triple battle involving a Gligar, and Mary on opposite corners of the field. I didn’t know flying type moves could land anywhere on the field, and thus Mary fell to a completely unforeseen acrobatics. Then I t he next battle another good chunk of my team would die, and most of my team would get evicerated by Drayden’s gym trainers, but I would nevertheless make it all the way to the elite four. I haven’t lost yet, I just haven’t actually battled them.

I think it would be funny if, instead of ruling out challenge mode altogether, you allowed yourself to do challenge mode runs using normal mode level cap. This was a really cool video! Steel is a super cool type, and even though it's kind of overpowered sometimes, I appreciate you showing it off with your own style. Hey Flygon, I have an idea for a nuzlocke you could do with the tier list videos that you have been making. You could do this by yourself but It would be more fun with a friend. Choose a game that you have made a tier list video on and play a nuzlocke but your encounters are chosen from when you spin a wheel. The wheel will have S, A, B, C, and F. Both people will spin the wheel 6 times (Unless you want more encounters). You then choose a pokemon from the category that the wheel lands on. Then you can race to see who beats the game first or whoever loses all their pokemon first.

Great Video as always. The fact at the end with the lvl increase just blew my mind 😂 i think it's still pretty interesting to do a nuzlocke in Challenge mode but with the Lvl Caps of the normal mode caps
