Me and my gf would go to target every week for groceries and pokemon cards. We'd get 3 packs each open them in the car and compare and trade. When we would get home I would sleeve my good cards and so would she and the rest we would add the ones we want to our decks and then battle best two out of three. Sad now that we won't and haven't been able to do that ever since this crisis.

From what I heard, Target will still sell them through their website. But I'm sure bots will be the ones able to buy them.

To be fair: The ultra rare holographic best cards - which are also the most collectable and worth the most, have less rare, non holographic, versions. These ones are typically not worth a whole lot but gameplay wise when playing the game itself, are just as effective.

This dude is a genius, he makes everything (ie stupid Pokemon cards and NFTs) so rational. I collect sports cards and resealing packs is TOTALLY a thing has been for decades! Only packs worth their weight is hobby packs (those bought online or at card stores). Anyway though I have no interest in Pokemon cards your busting a pack in the end is like me opening a sports pack, sometimes it's not even about money worth, sometimes I just like the pose or the way it's presented.... depends on my attitude lol. This dude could sell me a soppy wet rag :) Journalist through and through.

This just sucks a lot for those of us who actually, you know, like Pokemon. I LOVE opening packs and collecting cards. Even the commons and uncommons I love because I love seeing the art and seeing Pokemon I love in cool/interesting ways, not to mention seeing how drastically different one Pokemon can look depending on the artist and the art style and stuff. It's great. Why did Logan Paul have to go after Pokemon to begin with? Why didn't he just buy a bunch of bitcoin or whatever it is spoiled rich kids do? Like you said, it's a natural part of tcg's for older cards to slowly gain more value and become more rare, and it's fun being able to collect and have a cool collection. That's part of the appeal. And likewise, it's supposed to be fun and exciting when new sets and new cards get released. But, this whole nonsense has just killed so much of that joy. ESPECIALLY since it's Pokemon's 25th anniversary this year. People who actually care are missing out on cool stuff and it sucks. I can't wait for this nonsense to blow over so I can casually go to Target when a new set comes out and buy a few packs of cards here and there again. I like the card game, it's honestly not bad (like a lot of the weaker pokemon generally have useful abilities or whatnot too so it kinda balances out) but it IS very luck based which sucks. But that's just tcg's tbh. Anyways, don't buy from scalpers. That only perpetuates the problem. uh... thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I never got into pokemon that much as a kid other than occasionally watching the anime but one thing I remember from my interations with those who were into it is I don't think I ever saw anyone actually playing the card game, they were only ever showing off their collection in those binders with clear card sealing slots.

I've seen it happen with Magic the Gathering and it usually happens with any other competitive card game. The secondary market in some way usually gets in the way of people that just want to play the dam game and this is the most logical extreme of that

The current Pokemon TCG scalping situation reminds me of what happened during the Phantom Menace's release. Similar scalpers in 1999 bought up tons and tons of Episode 1 toys thinking they were going to be worth a ton in a few years like Star Wars figures from the 70's were. But then people realized that they reason those 70s figures were so valuable was because no one held onto them. Since all those scalpers were saving those Prequel toys, they were ironically devaluing their investment. Today you can buy a wide variety of Episode 1 action figures for dirt cheap because of dumb scalpers all rushing out and artificially increasing demand.

The day before Target stopped selling them, my local Target had a full stock of Pokemon cards after not having a single pack for at least six months. Limit one per customer (fair). Got a really sweet looking Tapu Koko V from my last pack before the prohibition.

All card games have been going up in price since COVID, even old ones. I've played the original Star Wars CCG for ~25 years, which went out of print in 2001, and even that market has exploded over the last year. With COVID, everyone who has the cards has enough time (and probably the monetary need) to sell all their cards, whereas a lot of other people have a lot less to do and want to satisfy their nostalgia and get back into it and look into buying full collections on eBay, since that game isn't sold in stores. With almost every player transitioning to using an online client, it also wasn't necessary for current tournament players to keep most of their cards, thus providing the supply.

I play play tcgs heavily and I just would like to clarify that a cards value is not arbitrary at all. When a card is valued it depends on many factors: age, rarity, population, competitiveness, aesthetic, etc.

As someone who has watched Maxmoefoe open Pokemon packs for forever, Kyle please do more of that stuff at the end! Your commentary is much more entertaining imo. Also it's rather insane to see the explosion of the Pokemon market after seeing folks lament at how overprinted it was just a few years ago. Sadly it seems like every kind of collectible has seen a similar kind of market explosion as greedy folks see how much money is in nerdy things. Hopefully that resolves soon!
