The scariest thing for me is that 80% of the value of these mystery boxes are usually sealed packs which, more than likely, are weighed and light packs. I would rather get $400-$450 worth of random cool cards than a pack if its a good chance it's already weighed and light.

Also most of the time they probably just google the price and pick the highest option without caring about the condition. So their claim of a $100 card could really just be $40 and you can't do anything about it. Def not worth it.

In this channel and many others though, they always present the minimum price especially for graded cards to get drama support and subs for "the money they lose" and the "contribution to society". The lowest sold listing on eBay doesn't represent reality. For example a graded card that for most non professionals around the world costs 30+ just to grade can never have a value of less than 10 just because of a lucky auction.

Both boxes seemed to be full with bulk cards the seller didn’t want. KZbin box just had them in better condition. The only real value came from the booster packs.

I always advise to buy the exact items you want and stay far away from mystery boxes unless you just want to support the person selling them. Mystery boxes are normally just a way to easly move hard to sell items (in this case lp to damaged singles) at a marked up price.

@@Mallhall85 a first edition base zard damaged isn’t even worth 500$ funnily enough, it needs to be psa 10 and in first editions is maybe 1/200 charizards, psa 9 which is also very rare is 2k, any normal charizard is 1000 and under and if its damaged might be less the 1000

Considering u can weigh packs it's definitely risky, but I bet someone has a warehouse of Pokemon vintage packs they bought at 5-10 dollars each decade or so ago selling em for hundreds of dollars each now lol

@@kimjong-un5562 still, even with owning thousands of vintage packs, it’s not difficult to weigh them all and sell all the lighter ones as random boxes, and selling the heavy ones later for even more than an average pack. And the more packs you have, the more heavies and the more cash to make by weighing. So it would be worthwhile from a cost/benefit standpoint. Only cost is the time it takes, but again, it’s an easy task to complete that could be knocked down during free time or by someone you trust

In most cases I would agree, but mystery boxes are probably my favorite thing we sell and people love it so long as we avoid stuffing it with junk or having the value dip below MSRP. Everyone loves the feeling of opening a present so we go as far as wrapping the box in gift paper 😂

Value is pretty easy to determine though. There’s fluctuations in the market but like if I say I value a card at 4x it’s price it doesn’t mean the box is worth it

The tin and rag where probably just filler. Maybe the seller had various size boxes. I've done the same shipping stuff out. Better erase space in a big box to minimize damage

I would love to see this become a series. Maybe find more mystery boxes and then after a dataset of 10-20 episodes. Do a quick wrap up. Also would be interested to look at trends. I liked the second box because Rocket is one of my favorites but i dont think i would have been happy spending $500 on either box. I would probably just take the $500 and buy specific stuff i want. Mystery boxes are hard because seller needs to make money and the person buying it wants $100,000 worth of stuff for $2 😆

Definitely the kind of video I have been waiting for, great info as always and I was already not a mystery box buyer, so thanks for showing me what I would have gotten when I don't have to buy it. I think the conditions on the cards definitely were affected by the fact that you are on KZbin. It is really strange the packaging with the washcloth and the empty tin, it doesn't make any sense at all. Would love to see more videos like this!

I've always steered clear of mystery boxes just because of the risk of not getting what you want, I'm by far one of the biggest advocates of giving a bit of money to a fan of the hobby that I know to go and make a mystery box for me. That seems to be the only way a mystery box eliminates completely that risk. As always Pat, this was a well thought-out experiment that shows what we probably would've thought. This would have to be repeated with other mystery box sellers I'd think to see if you would find any patterns 🤔 Love the content, can't wait for the next video 🙌🏻

The biggest concern I noticed was condition of the cards and what the cards you got were....it would be giving your best friend something for Xmas vs someone you never see. Still something but not the same attention to detail

Once again, great video and even better video idea! I think you should make this a series to at least attempt to keep sellers honest. In this case, it looks like the seller probably oversold your version for credibility but I would’ve expected more of a discrepancy between the boxes. Overall, I’d say kudos to the seller for not breaking the bank to try and gain popularity but I think any seller would oversell their product to a popular KZbinr! Much love ❤️

Gnarly video Pat. I have fallen victim to a few unfortunate mystery boxes back in the day when I was heavily into playing/collecting Yugioh cards. I think that the standard for mystery boxes have raised significantly and that the money gap you see between the two you got are just products of randomness. I do not think that the seller changed up anything because you’re a KZbinr; I know I wouldn’t.

The seller has plenty of motivation to though. They make the boxes to make profit. People are rightfully skeptical of mystery boxes so seeing a KZbinr open one and get great value out of it would entice at least enough people to buy it to make that value back

Just FYI, the "Crystal Guardians promo card" isn't a promo card. Most of the ex era, which included Crystal Guardians, had stamped cards in their reverse holo slots. So that's actually a reverse holo Bulbasaur, which can be pulled in any pack.

I stumbled upon this video while doing research to start my own mystery boxes. Mostly because I recently started collecting and I overwhelmed myself by buying several collections from other people. I’ve also purchased many mystery products that always seem to be a let down. These ones aren’t terrible in comparison to the ones I’ve seen. The price differences seem pretty realistic, here. You can only sell so many boxes at an 80-85% value in order to sell one that’s worth more than what you’re paying for. Gotta make money as the seller. The sellers that advertise vintage packs and make 300% profit on the boxes not receiving vintage packs are the dangerous ones.

What stood out to me the most was that one was almost exactly 50$ over and other 50$ under , feels like the person knows how to make a box ok-ish but never going to get more then what you paid. I understand why you didn't expose the seller since it was not a full rip off and my theory is just that since only opened 2 boxes. The damage on the cards was also a standout since it seemed again the seller used to make the normal box feel much worse .

The "bulbasaur promo card" was just the reverse holo from Ex Crystal Guardians, most of the Ex series cards had the set logo on the corner of the artwork, which is something that pre-release cards would start doing during the HGSS era, and misc promos from Gamestop and GAME would start doing in the Sword and Sheild era.

A great example where a larger sample size (even if just a simple increase to 2-3 boxes for 'you' and 'youtube'). That being said, that variance seems in line with what one might expect from a mystery box.

I've always felt like influencers get better items as opposed to the common person. Even with subscription boxes you can tell the value and even the way they do customer service is better for influencers.
