As someone whose been playing this game on a competative level for a long, long time now, I just feel so happy when I get to watch people gush about this game I love so much without it completly shifting to 'collectability' and 'monitary value'. I still remember my first card. A shiny Mudkip ('shiny' in this case is referring to the card, not the Pokemon). I thought it was so cool and it sent me into a mini phase of getting as many cards as I could. I'm not collecting now and I stopped a long time ago but those were some good times, seeing the different kinds of Pokemon, playing the actual game -incorrectly- with friends and siblings and just admiring some of the great art to come out of this cardboard.

If you're genuinely curious about the Dark Pokemon cards, they came from an old Team Rocket themed expansion. The main theme to the expansion was sort-of "cheating" and changing a couple rules to give yourself an advantage. So, instead of being limited to a 30 card deck, the expansion's ruleset allowed you 60 cards. Further, a Dark Pokemon was considered a different creature than the normal counterpart. So, while you were limited to 3 copies of a single Pokemon in the normal ruleset, the expansion allowed you to have 3 Charizard and 3 Dark Charizard cards in the same deck, as an example. The catch was, that particular feature went both ways. If you had a Dark Persian and it said it evolved from a Dark Meowth, you were not allowed to evolve it from a regular Meowth. (Note that I'm just picking Pokemon at random for this example. I don't recall if there was a legit Dark Meowth card specifically.) Honestly, while it was pretty cool at the time as a kid, I'm pretty sure when looking back that it was the first time they had to stall for time between actual game generation releases. That way, they could continue to release expansions and new cards, while there weren't yet any actual new Pokemon to base those cards around.

I still have my Dark Charizard card. Love the personality on display throughout the card. Just such a smug asshole in the art and his first move is "Nail Flick". The guy can barely be arsed to try. Then on the other hand the second move is "Continuous Fireball" where he just spray-and-prays fire all over the field and your flipping coins to see if the dude lands anything. Absolute legend.

The two Pokémon TCG games on the Game Boy Color are really rad and I've always been super-bummed they never did anything else like them. The second on in particular (which has a really good fan translation since it was, say it with me, "Japan only") has fights with specific rules where you have to use specific cards or the weakness rule is removed so you can't just rely on type advantage, among numerous others. That was pretty early on though so, much like the mainline games, there'd be so many cards for a new game it'd be impossible to include every one.

Not all the V cards are 3D artworks. You get some cards that are 2D. V Cards drawn by Akira Egawa for example look amazing. Some of her VMax cards like Blaziken, Umbreon, and Chandelure better illustrate Dynamax than most of the others. There are good 3D cards, like Lugia GX from Lost Thunder, and the Charizard GX Promo. I think it depends on the composition.

Like, for example, I have at least 15 Pokémon games in my possession, in which I played most of them, while I’ve only bought a total of ONE, SINGULAR pack of Pokémon cards, back when Gen 6 was the newest Gen! So yeah, I feel the reason I was never interested in them was because I never had any friends that played with Pokémon cards! So yeah! God, this explanation was too long! LMAO

I've always collected the cards for the artwork. The only reason I still buy them is for nostalgic reasons, but it really is difficult to do that when new packs are either impossible to find or worth about $10 in the store and older cards are so expensive you could purchase a 20-story mansion with the money you used to buy them.

My favorite cards were the delta species and stars, love my electric Feraligatr, Charizard, and psychic type Sceptile, water latios, fire latias, my electric EX Rayquaza, fire steel Mewtwo, just fun to give Pokemon types that aren't usually there's. Meanwhile stars were the shiny cards back before shiny was a term used by the company, I still got my regice star hidden away nicely in a binder. Also for that reason I started teaching my Charizard thunder punch, as a kid I had it in my headcanon that my Charizard had a 3rd electric type so it became immune to it and could juice its thunder punch up... little did I know this would pay off years later in XY, especially since my Firered Charizard had the perfect nature to be a Charizard X, like fate, going from generation to generation, game to game, then to become a true dragon and he's perfect for it... now megas don't exist. Funny thing is I finally got out of the game a few years ago, right during gen 7... then a certain someone by the last name of Paul had to have it rise in popularity again, I'm like fricken Kyle from South Park I'm either to late on the popularity train, too soon, or... both in this case. I collected every starter, Eevee, fossil, bird, and legendary up to that point, almost every Unown.

@@IgnatiusBlaze4 Sadly the story of that card just gets even worse from there. Me and my younger brother tried to get it back by doing another game, I used a Kyogre ex as an anti and my younger brother put up a Groudon ex. (back when ex was new and was not in all caps) He was using a deck that was built around multiple Deoxys forms, and the way he was cheating by restoring Deoxys hp every time he changed form. ( Me and my younger brother were around 7 years old at the time so we just believed whatever he said) Of course we lost that game, and he got both of the ex cards, and a small bit later he stopped playing pokemon and traded all of his cards for yugioh cards along with the mewtwo and the Kyogre and Groudon. Though a few years later I was at a small local yugioh tournament with my older brother and the guy that he traded the cards with was there, sadly he no longer had most of the cards, the only one of importance left was the Kyogre. I don't care much about yugioh,( was only really there because my brother really wanted me to get into it) and I got the Kyogre back by trading a bunch of yugioh cards for it.
