The question is, can I beat a Pokemon Hardcore Nuzlocke challenge in Crystal version using only Ground types? Well, it's a short question, but with a long answer, get some popcorn and a beverage and hope you enjoy.
Rules of the challenge:
Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch the Type Pokémon on each Route (Species Clause)
3. Nickname Pokémon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4 (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on "Set" battle mode

Fun fact! Trainers in this game will only use items on their highest leveled Pokémon in Gen 2. So if you drop something into red HP and they're not the ace of that trainer, they're not using items on it. Even if their ace is already fainted.

I feel like most youtubers ignore the Kanto level cap on the gyms (just setting it to Blue), but honestly I really liked you using it. It forced you to flush your team and pivot partway through the run, which made it much more interesting.

Good stuff! I've been thinking that an interesting challenge to do would be to only use one pokemon per trainer battle, and then not use the same pokemon the rest of the run. It might need a lot of grinding with wild pokemon, but it would be interesting to see the strategy needed to get through the game and saving certain pokemon for different trainers. It would also force you to use a bigger variety of pokemon then you would ever normally do in any run. I'm not even sure if it is possible with the limited selection during the early game, but maybe you could do different pokemon in the same evolution line (you use your starter for the first rival and can't use it again till it evolves). I'd be curious to see how you would approach a challenge like this.

It bothers me so much that I had Crystal as a kid and never knew you could catch a Phanpy that early. I used to catch Geodudes there, how did I never even accidently run into one? To this day I have never used a Donphan.

Maybe when you go to fight Pryce do the same strategy of beating Chuck, Shiny Gyarados, and Team Rocket HQ for the level 31 cap and then go for the level 35 cap of Jasmine afterwards. Then you wouldn't have to grind as much to fight Clair with her level 41 cap.
