Flannery's AI doesn't see a kill with Overheat, and since Pelipper resists Fire, that removes Overheat from being the AI's priority and it starts randomly choosing moves until it sees a win condition. That's how the AI handles setup combos like Sunny Day into Overheat AFAIK.

Also, Gyarados is Flying type due to the type being the closest type to Dragon. If Gyarados was Water/Dragon in Gen 1 it would have no weakness since Dragon Rage couldn't do super effective damage.

Oh the body slam over overheat. Fun fact the AI in gen 3 cheats, it actually knows the damage rolls and if a status affliction will go off before it chooses it’s moves, so yeah it probably saw the paralysis. The ONLY time a move is certain is if the AI sees a kill. Other wise it’s random between status/buff and the highest damage attack. Which probably explains the attract. Don’t take this as gospel though, I could be wrong, it’s just what seems true from playing emerald Kaiso

What I've been doing is mimicing the gym leaders monotype when I fight them- I'm playing Heart Gold, so for Falkner I have to use a Flying Team, and than for Bugys I need to raise a Bug Team and so on. For the E4 My team has to include 1 Psychic, 1 Poison, 1 Fighting, 1 Dark, 1 Dragon for each of their types + my starter! So far I'm grinding up to battle Whitney.
