I think the names are correct because Sabrina is like a witch and witches are known to live in marshlands. And fighting/strength has to deal a lot with chi and the soul. Chi is balancing the body and the soul.

I read somewhere that gold (the metal) is related to psychic powers in Japanese culture, that is why Golduck is called gold + duck (psychic duck). I think that would fit perfectly on why Saffron city is gold colored and the gym gives the gold badge (it may be seen as a gold medal or coin).

ISaveZelda It matters very much. Golduck's name has nothing to do with the badge for a psychic gym. It's not a psychic type even if it can learn psychic moves. A normal type learning a bug type move doesn't make it a bug type and would have nothing to do with a bug type gym. So no, the badge is not named after Golduck. Both Golduck and the badge are a reference. The badge does not refer to Golduck.

There was no reason to rename the Japanese badge names since they were already english terms. Earth Badge is called the Green badge, on top of being the former Kanto champion, Blue was made the 16th Gym Leader. In Japanese he's called Green. Green giving you the Green badge makes sense. All the badges were originally named after colors. Rainbow Badge was the only Gen 1 badge to retain it's name. Splash is called Hop/Jump in Japanese, so that's why it's Normal type. Badge Names (English/Japanese): Boulder Badge: Grey Badge Cascade Badge: Blue Badge Thunder Badge: Orange Badge Rainbow Badge Soul Badge: Pink Badge Marsh Badge: Yellow Badge Earth Badge: Green Badge Overall, most changes made sense. But if English is used in the original term. It should keep it in the official English version.

Here some things I want to add to your video: The Rainbow Badge in Celadon actually makes sense. In many other languages, it is referred to prism or rainbow (it was just green, because hardware limitations). Even the English sign states, that it's the rainbow town. What I think, is also interesting, are the trainers in their respective gym. Saffron City has 7 trainers plus the leader. 3 of them are channelers, so, Ghost type Trainers (which happened to be also Poison type in Gen I). Fuchsia City's Gym has 6 trainers of whom 4 are Jugglers, who only use Psychic type. But as you stated, I don't think, there was something flipped around in the original games. The more we assume, the farther away we will get from the truth.

Something I thought of when you were bringing up the colour names of the badges deals with typing in Mystery Dungeon. Gold Gummies are favoured by Psychic pokemon and Pink ones by Poison types.

was gonna say, heart makes sense for both of them, because on the poison side, poison could effectively stop your heart...aside from this, the gym is also a ninja gym with invisible walls, and while it's a stretch, follow your heart not your eyes...and you don't usually associate the heart with psychic, you associate the mind...Soul can also be applied more so to the gym theme, rather than poison... the issue is figuring out where Marsh correlates with either...in the Sinnoh region, they have a Marsh location, which happens to be the Safari Zone of that region...but the terrain of Kantos Safari Zone isn't really Marshy, so...that's the best I've got...

Maybe Marsh is sort for Marhsmallow and the badge is actually a flattened marshmallow with a flattened mini marshmallow at its center. It also looks a bit like an eye, which is a symbol that is associated with psychic.

Sakura Petals have a sort of heart shape, and it also a bright pink color. You can a Sakura petal a cherry blossom tree. If you watch anime, you can tie that in with the Gym leader as well. Alot of Martial Arts anime love the use of cherry blossom's, and would have the Swordsman or Ninja under it enjoying some sake.( I know not just Martial Arts animes have Sakura Trees, but you all know what I mean.)

Here's another thought regarding Koga's badge. While the shape of it is vaguely heart-like, I can also see it being designed like the petals of the sakura, or cherry blossom. It has often been depicted in many anime and manga that ninjas train their precision by trying to slice leaves and flower petals in two while these targets flutter to the ground. This may also explain the line in the center of the badge, as it represents a bifurcated flower petal.

Excuse me for being late to the party as I just discovered your channel. I believe the names for the translations of the marsh and the soul badge are incorrect. Simply because a Marsh can also be seen as a poisonous swamp or something along those lines. The color of the Solar chakra is gold. Thus meaning the Soul is gold. People can relate psychic ability to the soul along with the use of the commonly popular psychic pokemon Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam. Kadabra showing the strong spiritual connection with its pokedex entries and the Sugil rune on its body.

I think the anime changed the badge names around in the English version because Sabrina didn't have any good side at the start of the episodes of her gym and souls are referenced in religion as being good. And it must of been a last minute change as they didn't have time to make a new name up

I always thought that Sabrina's badge looked like a coin. I've heard that some psychics need a material object to channel their abilities. Following this train of logic, it's entirely plausible that Sabrina uses Marsh Badges to focus her powers. I hope I explained that the way it sounded in my head. I personally think that unlike the other badges the Soul and Marsh Badges were named after there color and shape instead of the type specialty of the gym leader who gives them to trainers who defeat them.(I.E. the Soul Badge was named so because it was pink like one of the colors that is used to represent the soul and the fact it is shaped like a heart, and the Marsh Badge was named so because it is a gold/yellow color which is a one of the colors that can represent a marsh.

Well the soul isn't really the heart, it's a non-human aspect of a human and has no material make-up to it. So that could be paralleled with psychic powers, which seem to have no embodiment or material property, and are thus the same as a soul. So, I guess you could stretch your imagination a little and say that psychic type moves may attack the souls of other pokemon and therefore soulbadge is n appropriate name. As for the marsh badge, I have no idea

I believe they are what they are. This is my theory. Sabrina is loosely based on a character of the same name from a TV series called "Sabrina the teenage witch" and came out around the same time as pokemon. By the time Pokemon had come to the US, this show had gained a lot of steam so I'm fairly certain Nintendo of America went with Sabrina to appeal to people that may have seen the show. Getting that out of the way let's think about witches. When you think of a generic witch, what do you think? Old, green warty hags that live where? Dark dank places away from civilization. Typically swamps. Or, in this case. Marshes. And now let's look at Koga, you're right, psychics do connect the body and soul, but not quite as much as a ninja does. Chi and or chakra can be linked to many different forms of martial arts, Thaijutsu, Jujitsu, Ninjutsu, etc. Ninjas. Chi. Mind, body and... what? Soul.
