I've always likened Pokemon battling more to boxing. Boxers clearly get hurt from what they do but they do it out of their own free will and they enjoy it. It's not "human abuse" or anything. Also, Pokemon seem to have very close if not equal intelligence to humans. So this comparison makes even more sense.

Boxers choose to fight. where as it's not the Pokémon that decodes to fight, rather it is forced to fight by his master. How would you feel if someone sends you to fight Mike Tyson in a ring which you cannot leave until you faint. Infact Boxers are not caught and taken away by some one else from their homes. But Pokémon are forcefully captured from the wild by attacking them.

There's more to Pokemon to just battling. Sure most people play for that but some people like contests (which were recently added back) or making a secret base. It is in a Pokemon's nature to battle as they gain happiness after winning a battle and just by being with a trainer. Humans made Pokeballs that make Pokemon more comfortable (Luxury Balls) and somewhere to heal them quickly. Heck in the anime Ash jumps off Prism Tower because Pikachu fell off with no regard for his own safety.

The happiness stat has some relevance to this. Having battles clearly makes them happier, but more importantly simply being hurt doesn't seem to bother them at all. Even when they are knocked out the effects are marginal, so maybe they have CIP or something? Maybe I'm looking too deeply into this.

Here's how I see it - -Part 1 - Pokemon Themselves • A Pokemon is more closely related to a human than an animal, as in an animal can't really think for itself. It uses instinct, and does what it needs to to survive or get a mate. Pokemon, however, think for themselves. They make friends, fall in love (As seen with Buneary and Pikachu, and many, many times with Oshawott lmao), protect their loved ones, and do things based more on thought not instinct, just like a human. • You also have to take into consideration that Pokemon have all of the characteristics that are special to humans alone. An animal doesn't have feelings (as far as we know, although I honestly believe they do), can't exactly think (As in thinking deep life quotes or some shit lol), and an animal can't truly fall in love. It's more finding a healthy mate that looks strong I guess XD -Part 2 - Battling • As I already said, Pokemon are not animals.They are Pokemon. Pokemon were most likely bred and created for battle and partnership. They have body structures and skin make-up that protect them from actually being harmed by the attacks, but they are still able to take damage and faint. Just because they are being attacked, doesn't mean they are being abused. They have fun doing it. It's like saying somebody in a wrestling match was being abused, but obviously they chose to do it so they could have fun, or settle an argument without hurting anyone. -Part 3 - Gambling • Personally, I don't see it as gambling. Sure in the games when you win you get money, but what about link battles? Do you get money from that? No! You're just simply battling your friends to have a good time, not to sit there and bet on whose Pokemon is going to win. • And in the anime, not ONCE has Ash ever gotten prize money. I'm not really sure how he supports himself lmao, but he battles because he finds it enjoyable and amusing, not to gamble with the trainer he's battling. That's pretty much my train of thought on this subject. To recap - •Pokemon are Pokemon. Not animals. As a matter of fact they are more human like, than animal like. • Pokemon battles aren't abusing the Pokemon, they are basically letting the Pokemon just romp around and have a good time. • Battling is nothing like gambling. Key differences: Pokemon won't let you "capture" them if you knock them out, you must persuade them you are strong enough to only almost do it, lore says wild pokemon wish to prove themselves strong but won't let any old chump with a pokeball trainer them. So right off the bat the pokemon has chosen to allow you to train it, very much like a boxer or cagefight might have a personal trainer. Next up, Pokemon are sapient (like most boxers/cagefighters, haha, sorry bad joke), they communicate fully with eachother and with humans through gestures and some can even learn english and speak (see Meowth) - they are basically human level intellect within an animal-like body and within game lore and anime lore they can choose not to fight if they deem their trainer unworthy (in game mechanics this requires badges n only with traded pokemon but is within universe), Lastly they can exit their pokeball at will (see pikachu [game and anime], psyduck [anime], wobbufet [anime] and in the anime they can choose to run away (though this isn't in the game). ### So to sum up the main points: 1) Pokemon chooses you as a trainer! cockfighting nope, no choice. 2) Pokemon can choose not to battle! cockfighting nope, no choice 3) Pokemon can exit their "cage" at any time! cockfighting nope. Bonus: pokemon can't die within the game mechanics, only ever get knocked out and healed fully by a pokemon centre. Bet boxers n cagefighters wish they could heal their wounds that easily. Though I understand why people say the two are similar, there are many more differences to make them exactly the same. Since the Pokemon are treated with love and rarely die (not to mention there's no bloodshed), I think it's safe to say it's not cockfighting. Gambling on the other hand... I'd have to say there is some in the Pokemon world, since there's plenty of slot machines and ways to get money in the game. BTW, extremely informative and well done video. :)

Other different I see in Pokémon of Cock fighting or other modality of animal fighting that in the battle you control the Pokémon actions, if you want him to use Scratch you order to use Scratch, if you want to stop him for fighting only you return him into his Pokéball, and more important, his waits for your the order before doing anything. However in a real animal fighting you can´t control the animal, you can shout to stop doing something or whatever you want, they only think to fight, even kill the other animal. Is because Pokémon they not only can listen people, but also can reason?

Speaking of pokemon abuse, I know I am walking into dangerous territory but hey Bulba Tube made it out fine, I think the whole message about treating pokemon with love and respect in Gen V was really unnecessary. It has become my least favorite because of this both in the anime and game. It handles it's message so poorly to the point that I am not surprised that Peta jumped on them at Gen V rather than Gen 1 because Gen V did such a terrible job trying to convey the message. Or maybe Peta is just slow, I don't know.

I don't believe Pokemon to be animal cruelty since the Pokemon seem to enjoy battling, as seen in the anime and when their happiness goes up due to battles. They are not forced into battling, as seen with Ash's Charizard and high level traded Pokemon in the games, and they also get into battles on their own and volunteer to be sent out in some fights.

+Carly Newbold In the pokemon universe pokemon are pretty smart and they seem to enjoy the act of battling. That is like humans enjoying boxing. It is fine as long as both parties are okay with it. No long term negatives so far. Some pokemon do not want to battle and just dont while others on rare occassion are forced to, but that is generally solved by ash or someone setting the trainer straight. Not that bad really.

Bulba Tube I also remember a battle between a pokemon and a starmie, Where the pokemon bite down on the starmie and broke that gem in the middle to a billion bits. This technically killed the pokemon. I forgot the name of the episode but I do remember it involved team rocket, ash and the rest being on a ship in a poor scheme. James buying a magikarp, and the ship sinking.

hey, male and female praying mantises will fight too if a male catches a female out of breeding season they will fight. if 2 males meet they will fight, same with females it is actualy fun to watch and do. i won a copy of pokemon emerald off of my friend because my mantis was stronger. we had to pull him off before he killed my friends mantis. lol he wasnt able to fight for a week

Let's put it this way: If you get something after a battle/fight/game it might be considered gambling. If two teams play a football match and one wins he gets 3 points, which would otherwise had been either awarded to the other team or shared in case of a tie in all scenario's at least someone loses at least 2 points. Does that make every sportsevent gambling?

If you really look at it, it draws from a number of sources, not just cock or beetle fighting. Two in particular come to mind. Most Fighting type Pokemon are based on a particular school of martial arts (Hitmonchan is a boxer, Hitmontop pratices capoeira, Hariyama is a sumo wrestler, etc), and many episodes of the anime have featured tournaments with just Fighting types. It's sort of an example of the "my kung fu is stronger than yours" trope. The legendaries are mostly based on giant mythical beasts, and their rampages on cities and battles with one another are highly reminiscent of Japanese kaiju films like "Godzilla". Pokemon isn't about cock fighting. It's just about fighting in general, and the various forms it takes.

TBustah Excellent analysis! I agree, it would be foolish to think it came from just one source. Lots of outside influences from one idea to the next. I just wanted to lay to rest that Pokemon is not cockfighting, for all intensive purposes. I could be wrong, but i strongly feel Pokemon is about expressing who is the more dominate creature in the ring (since battling is how the story line progresses and one must partake). And since it is not overly violent like animal fights, i think its more closely related to Beetle wrestling. Which may have taken inspiration from Sumo wrestling, or heck even the other way around :)
