I can remember vividly in my mind as a kid just randomly exploring Mt. Silver for the first time. The exact moment I somehow stumbled upon Red. Obviously I had no idea what the sprite was but as soon as I walked up and pressed A and he turned around I remember it so clearly. The "...." then this theme just comes on and slaps. I remember trying to explain to my friend who would always come over and we'd play Pokemon Silver together what I found. "I swear it is fighting the you from the first games!" and just un-fathomable the whole concept was. He didn't believe me at first of course. Man this has to be one of the best moments in videogame history.

Fun fact: In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, after beating the Pokemon League, this theme also plays when you battle your rival at the Indigo Plateau on Mondays and Wednesdays. Why HGSS made the stupid decision to just replace it with the standard rival battle theme, I don't know, but hey. At least in some timeline, your rival is seen as on Lance and Red's equal once he redeems himself.

Legitimately one of the BEST boss fights in ALL of gaming. No bullshit, no monologues, no dumb reactions from bystanders, just two pokemon grandmasters meeting at the summit of an harsh icy mountain at the ends of their respective journies battling for supremacy. With so many games where one defeats gods, demons, and other supposedly "powerful" beings, what's better to challenge the player with than a reflection of their own past triumphs and victories? This theme... this theme! I was 10, middle of summer, my english was so bad it took me a year to understnd what to do to go to Kanto (Not joking). I remember the very first time I saw Lance, I was afraid of him, he was the champion after all. My team wasn't the best, I learned a lot about moves et strategy since, I was packed with max potions and revives, my team of my best Pokémon from Jotho and my Typhlosion. Thunder Punch on his dragons! From then, he was my grinding bitch when I wanted to level up my team. But Red... I owe my victory to luck and my lv100 starter (I think I had Lugia too). But... I had to pass my game to a 'friend' and never see it again... so when HG and SS were announced, I cried of joy.

And, in the first generation, there was no female protagonist, and since Gen 2, you have a lot of interactions with protagonist that you don't choose. For exemple, in pokemon gold, silver and crystal, if you choose gold, Kris would talk to you. And if you choose Kris, gold would talk to you. The better example is the Gen 3 games, where the other protagonist is your rival.

This battle was the culmination of all the innovation and craftsmanship Gamefreak wrought in the late 90s. Really contemplate what they did here; this single encounter was a well-hidden* secret boss added to punctuate the bold decision to add _the entire previous game's region_ to their sequel in which you do battle against the silent, self-insert protagonist of that same previous game, which assuming you played it, is implying you're fighting yourself. Imo this is the #1 most creative and clever optional boss concept ever made. *Red isn't super hard to find, however in the 90s there was no internet (or at least it was not easily accessible), so it's very likely you had no idea the previous region was included so you weren't looking for him. This made the moment you discovered it really special and something that is almost impossible to replicate now (and let's face it, an additional region in any modern game would be sold to us as DLC).

Also, Lance being champion suggests that he beat Red some time after Yellow.

Personally, I always felt this version of Red/Lance's battle theme always fit the most, mainly because of the sound font it uses. One thing about G/S/C is that it uses the same 'instruments' as R/B/G/Y, mainly due to both of them being on the Gameboy. Due to this, a lot of the songs in G/S/C sound very similar to R/B/G/Y songs. Normally this doesn't mean much, but with this song... The intro to the song (0:10 if you wanna REALLY hear it) is the same intro that R/B/G/Y has when you boot up the game. No matter the rendition of Red's theme, this is always there, but due to the sound font of G/S/C, this version of Red's theme is the only version that has that intro sound EXACTLY like the intro jingle from R/B/G/Y. This (to me, at least) always made this version of the song always sound the MOST like you're battling the previous protagonist, due to it basically having the intro jingle with no changes. Back in the day when I played GSC for the first time I had played pokemon yellow. A while later GSC comes out and I get a gameboy advance to play it. So I got through GSC and then discovered 'oh my god! Kanto! Awesome!" and had a blast. Then mt silver which took a while to get too after beating the kanto gyms. I climb MT silver to the top and up there I see someone. There's three dots. 'PKMN trainer Red wants to battle.' Hah, red, like the version of the game. 'PKMN trainer red sent out Pikachu' My mind was blown, as I had started with pokemon yellow. And well, I was playing against me. This moment, at age 12 or so gave me nostalgia to something I had done barely two years ago. Its one of my favorite gaming memories of all time. And then I beat his ass so hard.

When the battle theme starts and I realize that this is no ordinary battle but I'm facing who I once was in red. The music really set a tone that this was it. This was my final challenge before truly beating the game. Even with how simple this music is it still takes me back to when the only worry in the world I had was beating red

The best part about the VS Red battle in Gold/Silver is how unexpected it is. Since I didn't had Internet at the time, I explored Mt. Silver looking for a legendary Pokémon, like Mewtwo or Kanto Birds. Instead, when I reached the top of the mountain I found two things: the future last member of my party (Larvitar) and the last challenge of the game (Red), who beated me at the time.
