To me, Cynthia was "Let us test your true strength trainer, for your final and most difficult challenge stands right before you." That's what her theme was to me. However, Blue's Champion theme was, "I've stood before you again and again and again. Throughout your journey I was with you one step ahead, but you always seemed to catch up. And now, here we are, on the same footing. Now there's only one thing left to do. As your rival, give me a battle that shows me you are worthy to stand where you are. Battle me, and nothing else." I favor Blue's Champion theme over Cynthia's.

I trained up my pokémon, and fought the elite four. After beating lance, i revived my one of my pokémon that fainted trying to kill his aerodactyl, and used max potions on the rest of the team. He sent out his pidgeot, and i used sandslash. I used swords dance to boost my attack, he went for mirror move and boosted his attack as well, and sandslash defeated him in one hit with rock slide He sent out alakazam and i tought sandslash wouldn't take the hit well considering his low special, so i went for earthquake and waited for alakazam to kill him so i could get a free switch to my snorlax. SANDSLASH TANKED A PSYBEAM AND DEFEATED ALAKAZAM WITH ONE EARTHQUAKE. Then basically sandslash killed everything in one hit except for exeggutor, he took 2 strengths to kill. That was the day i learned how good swords dance was, and also sandslash became one of my favorite pokémon. I know no one will bother to read this but whatever .-.

I never really realized how detailed the song was, the opening to loop, it screams tense and raw power. You worked hard to get here, now you have to share the ultimate battle with someone who was assumed to be in shadow of you. Walking into that arena at 7 years old in 1999, severely under-leveled, low on healing items, with no internet or outside help, this battle theme brought on nothing but dread for me. As the battle progressed (as so did the music), it became an intense do-or-die situation. I was able to scrape my way through it, but man was it intense. All-time greatest boss/finale music of my generation.

This is still the BEST and MOST intense final boss battle theme of any game I've ever played. From the set up of fighting through the Elite Four, the reveal that your rival is the surprise final fight, to the climax and culmination of your rivalry through this final battle when both your teams are freakishly strong, and putting it all on the line for the title of Champion, to the wild melody and syncopation of the music that acts as a musical culmination to all the battles you've fought before, leading up to this one. It really doesn't get better than this. Other generations had their own plots and final reveals, and some were well done, but this consistent competition with a rival that always stays one step ahead of you, leading to an ultimate final battle to put your skills and training philosophies to the ultimate, personal test at the very end is, I've always felt, the core of the narrative of the Pokemon games. And as a final boss, this hasn't been matched since the first generation, because it's the main and most personal and intense plot. A real coming of age story, all coming to a head in this final battle between lifetime rivals from Palet Town.

One of my fav champion themes next to N’s (idk if you’d count that though). The brief moments of suspense that start at 0:03 is what gets me pumped for this. It’s like Blue has always been striving to beat Red, and the dialogue right before makes you wanna best Blue even more

I remember this battle: I must have been 7 or 8 and I was totally exasperated by all the Full Restores he used. At some point it was just down to sheer luck, especially as I was a VERY sucky trainer at the time and my team had already been devastated by the elite four. But boy the emotion I felt. I remember my heart pounding like crazy when the last pokemon went down... Red and blue are not my favorite games in the series, but I've never felt this emotion again with a pokemon game

Be me, just a young kid enjoying my first Gameboy Color and Pokemon Red. After struggling I finally beat the E4, and beating Lance filled me with such accomplishment..........only to be told there was one more challenger. One more battle before I could become the Pokemon League Champion. Going into that next room to see Blue........and then to hear this music and have my half dead team prepare for an ass kicking. I was never hit with such a plot twist in my little life before, but god damn was it an amazing experience!

Probably one of the most iconic moments in gaming. Back when I was a kid I never knew the emotion of fighting your hardest, and then having to randomly fight your rival out of nowhere. Yup, legato to staccato. A pretty intelligent demonstration of this little sound chip as an expressive musical instrument, and the remakes completely skip that.

Good point. The legato and staccato being in exactly the right places emphasizes the drama and intensity perfectly. Something the meandering, overly developed themes of later games try to capture but fall far short of because they're mere copies and new takes, instead of a passionate exposition of the narrative itself like the original games' music.

The inside panic that your rival was first to become Champion and he’s been really rude to you throughout your journey gives this theme it’s main reason for how it goes. The power of his Pokémon by Gen 1 standards were BROKEN, even if the newer re-releases make it more tolerable. This battle and theme is such a classic on the Game Boy. It’s why Game Freak and Nintendo are basically tech giants when it comes to video games, along with Mario Bros.
