As someone who plays vgc. The crafting system is baffling. They literally perfected tms by making them infinite and then were like "what if we reintroduced the problems caused by having single use tm but make it even more annoying and time consuming".

It's the absolute dumbest decision in the game by far. Like everything else that sucks was predictable, but the TM thing was PERFECTED in sword and shield. Have lower tier moves like flame charge and low kick as permanent tms, and high tier moves like seed bomb and earthquake as findable/earnable TR's that break on use and are quick and easy to get in raids. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY wanted tms to go back to how they were before. What's next, mandatory HM's again just as a throwback to when pokemon didn't suck ass?

@@WatsonDynamite yeah obviously it's not _that_ time consuming or annoying in comparison since they're rather easily replicable, but the system still is totally unnecessary padding. If they wanted to add a crafting system like this for worldbuilding purposes I think it would be much better for the craftables to result in permanent TM's instead of single-use, and for the recipes to at least have some clue on from what Pokemon they need the loot instead of just having question marks in place until you happen to stumble upon the right Pokemon. But I would still like it much, much more if all TM's were permanent and you could just find them all over hidden in random places. It would be much better for world design to have these kinds of rewards for explorable places.

​@WatsonDynamite They had this right in SWSH, yet f'd it up in SV. Every time you need a new TM, you gotta grind of SPECIFIC Pokemon to gain the resources needed to craft ONE TM. It's not as annoying as having to play through 60% of a game for a specific TM but nonetheless it's still annoying.

The reason why the game performance degrades the more you play it is because it can't clear unused assets correctly (basically a memory leak)...a problem that can be easily fixed with simple bug testing and more development time

i used to play the unpatched ps3 version of fallout new vegas (the most poorly optimized and performing version) and that game had the same problem where if you played too much on one save file it would eventually get to the point where it would just crash on startup and you couldn’t play on that game anymore and you’d have to start all over

The fact the base version of SMT V runs is as optimized and as competent as it does when it isn't a technical first party is astounding. Granted a lot of games like that, DQ11 and XBC3 all probably had multiple years longer development times but maybe that's a sign there's a reason these games take longer to optimize than a GBA~3DS game... and to be honest I feel like the 3DS was when the signs of them being weak at optimizing was starting to show.

Fun fact, the game records your play time, and so does the switch. Turns out that the game's counter ignores lag, meaning at the end of your playtime you can check to see how much time the game sucked from your life. When i checked i had lost about 8 hours...

20:25 Pokemon Showdown is a free online simulator used by competitive players to practice battling, both for official and unofficial formats without needing to be hindered by the time sink of Pokemon's stat maxing. The Shedinja strategy you are talking about was used in the AG (Anything Goes) format. The Anything Goes format has no banlists or rules. Not even a Species Clause. The format got ditched due to complaints with that Shedinja strategy. Because the program is open source, Game Freak and Nintendo cannot do much about it. Edit: My bad. The format got dropped because of ReviveCats (Liepard/Purrloin Prankster Assist Revival Blessing). Tera Shedinja is not that good in practice.

It's nonprofit and doesn't infringe on any of their copyright protections, if they took it down they'd be the ones violating the law. They know it too, they've been aware of Showdown for nearly fifteen years without sending so much as a warning to them. Nintendo has taken down fan projects the week they went public, if something is up for over a decade its because their multi-billion dollar legal team can't find a way to take action against it.

MY fave thing about scarlet and violet- When I first booted up the game, I learned that when you confirm you character the game takes a screenshot to use for the trainer ID/ student passport in game. "Why are you saying that like its news" you may ask. It isn't new information, you are correct. but you see, when I confirmed my character, For a half second one of their eyes imploded into polygons. That half second is when the game took the photo, and as such, my characters id now has them looking like their eye was gouged out by a vengeful deity. ever since I started the game, to this day, I have NOT changed my passport photo, and I never will. Edit- SOMEONE (not naming names) had the GALL to doubt me. I HAD TO MAKE AN IMGUR FOR THIS. Edit 2- my hubris is punished. I cannot post the pic due to anti-link stuff (Or maybe it was me calling youtube a cockblocker). someone get me mental help, or a solution

Pokemon is that kind of franchise, that I occasionally remember out of nostalgia, and think "if they improve X, I might have a look at the next entry". But even if they improve whatever I hoped for, they do it in some inconvenient and bafflingly overcomplicated way, and manage to mess up 5 other things in the process. Truly the epitome of "one step forward, [five] steps back". They'll never get there. If Pokemon was invented today, I would get laughed out the door with this quality.

Red and Blue were mostly par for the course with the original Gameboy, and Gen V were some of the best looking games on the DS *period.* Also, the difference between 1996 to 2006 is much greater than the difference between 2014 to 2024. Botw and Totk actually uses a feature for the NPCs where they have a bunch of premade clothings and hats in different colors with their faces and hairstyle coming from Default Miis. Nah chief. The random trainers in Scarlet and Violet are actually a step in the wrongest possible direction as far as character design is concerned. We got from great designs that genuinely stand side by side with the gym leaders (Heck, the gen 6 Hex Maniac surpassed every other human character from that game in terms of popularity) to the blandest, most cookie cutter designs imaginable.

I think the random generated faces is great on paper but the clothes design of these trainers aren't that great...and there are also much fewer trainer classes that they were few generations ago and a lot of trainers in Paldea wear the student attire which doesn't help.

Bought it recently with a friend, didn't really play together besides telling each other what we caught. It was fine enough, and the visual glitches didn't take me out of the game besides making me laugh a little or hyperfixate on them like a lamp moment. Still, wouldn't recomment it unless you're really into Pokemon or JRPGs, and that last caveat is more on the line of you enjoying building teams in JRPGs like Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest Monsters or the type of games that gives you random PCs to play with (like FF Tactics Advance or DQIX or such other RPGs), rather than the challenge of the game or things like that.

My brother bought it for me in a bundle (with a bunch of other ones for the family). I wasn't sure on it yet, needing more time to research it before I bothered with it. I actually rather enjoyed Legends Arceus for what it was... and I downright hate Pokemon anymore. Sick to death of it. I can confirm a lot of what is said above. Unless you REALLY like Pokemon and/or are blind to their stupidity as a company, it's not really worth it. I've sunk a good 100+ hours into it because my friends and family are into it and they really wanted to play and raid with me, and I'm tolerant enough, but I'm definitely vocal when things annoy me. It's deplorable that a AAA company like Game Freak can't make simple terrain or cameras behave correctly, or have to remove three features for every one they add, or can't let us enjoy character customization properly, or even understand how to do proper menu UI smoothly. It's hilariously awful. Pros: + The pokemon themselves are actually pretty alright, I generally never have any problems with the 'mons themselves. + For once, in my opinion, the music's pretty good. I usually find the music too tinny and shrill to enjoy. I actually enjoyed the music this game. + Combat, while indeed rather slow, is still pretty solid. The mechanics are tight. + Tera-ing as a gimmick, is alright. It's slow to activate, slow to use, dumb and clunky to look at, but mechanically, I think it's pretty neat. Cons: - The game is falling apart around you. Don't let the size of this point fool you, this is massive. This shouldn't be this bad. There's no excuse for walls 10 feet away to be morphing around you. There's no excuse for anything 20 feet away to be taking significant drops it FPS. There's no excuse that shadows around you should be second guessing their life choices based on their angle from you at ALL TIMES. It's just plain awful. - You know what? I got more. There's no excuse for people to be blipping out of existence 30 feet away, or mountains 60 feet away. There's no excuse for the loading times. There's no excuse for how difficult climbing terrain should be. It's astounding how a company as rich as Game Freak is could turn out something so bad. You could say "Well they know people will buy it" and that might be true, but this is the kind of bad that HURTS REPUTATION! - The lack of Set Switch (as Soda mentioned once or twice maybe), but also noticeably "Skip Battle Animations" is also missing. I like having those disabled sometimes, especially when manually grinding out my EVs or in pithy battles that get in my way. And yet now I HAVE to watch animations! - The world is big and wholly traversable... and there's bugger-all to do in it. The bane of any open-world game. Oh sure, you can catch pokemon or beat the trainers or do raids or find items..... but those are destinations. Once you catch all the pokemon in a region, you don't need them; or beat all the trainers, or head to a raid destination, you just go to where they are... you aren't taking in the sights and EXPLORING. Finding items requires exploring, but they always spawn in the same places. But most aren't worth your time, and raids drop better items anyway, and those appear on the map... as a destination to directly head to, so why bother going exploring anyway? Even then, there's not a lot of "world" to explore. There's not much to see. There's some ruins, but what about them? They have no lore to them. They are just.... ruins. The world is big, but small. A lot to do, but nothing worth seeing. - The story is like any pokemon game story, and I sorry to say I'm biased against them, it's pretty bland. By now most already know it if they were interested to begin with. But just in case I won't say anything. This game gives you three "factions" of a story to play off of: You have the "Gym League" faction angle, represented by Nemona; you have the "Ultimate Sandwich" angle, represented by Arven; and you have the "Game's Token Bad Guys" angle, represented by Team Star. You can do them in any order, each improves your gameplay in some way, such as Arven improving your Bike Lizard, and the Gym League improving your Pokemon Level Cap. That's all well and good, but all of the stories and characters you meet along the way are still up the Game Freak Standard... which is to say.... meh. Each character has maybe ONE personality trait. Take Nemona for example, she has ONE emotion, "let's battle". That's all her pretty little head thinks about, it's what she lives and breathes. Every story beat character has ONE trait in Pokemon Games, and I think they all suffer for it, and it makes each character feel shallow. This game is no different. There's only one character in SV who I think really has any depth, and I won't say who, but those who have played might already know who it is. But overall the story is just uninteresting, and I include the DLC in that. Especially the DLC. This got longer... way longer... than I intended, apologies. I hope (but doubt) this will be of any use to anyone. This went from me trying to give an informed opinion to more of a rant at the end, heheh. But like I said, I've been dragged kicking and screaming through this game by people who REALLY love pokemon. I used to LOVE pokemon. I'd watch the show as I ate my morning cereal prior to school. My favorite pokemon were Eevee/Flareon, Magneton, and Alakazam for the longest time. Fire/Psychic has always been my go-to types, but I gained a soft spot for Fairy in Pokemon Y when that was given to me. But over the years, it's really soured. There's clearly no passion on the devs' part anymore. Gen 7 was a handholding nightmare, and Gen 8 didn't look much better. I never even finished Pokemon Sun, stopped halfway through Victory Road because whatsernuts wouldn't get off my dick and leave me alone as I did my super important me-time Trainer Trial. There's a part of me that still likes pokemon, I'm just pretty sure it's not worth liking. Thank you for coming to my Text Talk. I hope this was worth reading, and thanks again if you did.

I do want to add personally, the Dexit problems get even more ridiculous the longer we have to deal with it. By the time the SwSh debacle was over, the generally accepted "excuse" was that Gamefreak wasn't able to really bring all the Pokemon over (which is still complete BS due to how they designed the models to begin with). Come SV, we've finally got every Pokemon in a Switch game in some capacity, yet Dexit is still being harshly enforced. There's no actual "developmental woes" problem, they're just arbitrarily forcing it on the consumer, likely to force them into buying HOME subscriptions to keep their Pokemon around. Gamefreak, we are *5 Games into the Switch's life cycle, what is going on*

I mean, that's not even news. People were saying that right after that one press conference, months before SwSh came out. And then they announced DLC that literally just proved everything else they said was a bs excuse. Heck; when LGPE came out they datamined the game and found out that it pretty much had everything added to it and then later removed. Things like abilties and all moves were still listed and pretty much functional because it was needed data for Home. All Pokémon are seemingly ingame, just with models swapped for Marowak as a place holder. Multiple people have proved multiple times in multiple ways that it isn't a matter of disk space, hardship or cost of development, or even "animating" or "balancing" the Pokémon. They did it consistently 20 years in a row and it should be *easier* not harder to keep updating it after transitioning into 3D. Every single contrievance was made with intentionality to sell more of something else.

Gamefreak heard someone tell pokemon loyalists to touch grass or go outside and they took that personally so made it so the player can't stop being outside. Even though no other open world game has really ever done that. Look at botw and totk, or even fallout and those are all settings where there are actual lore reasons for there being less buildings instead of Iberia even though Iberia has had buildings and cities and urban areas since before the punic wars

Fun fact about the game running poorly, something that may or may not impact that is that while playing on the main map, the entire ocean is permanently loaded in every area, and the ocean just so happens to be about 1000 times bigger than the actual map. Even worse is how this is barely even an exaggeration of the size.

Having the entire ocean be loaded actually isn't an uncommon practice. It usually takes more processing power to cull parts of the ocean that you can't see than to render the whole thing as a flat, repeating texture.

People do like to argue that it was a remake of Ruby and Sapphire and not Emerald, but why the hell are you using the worse version as the basis for your remake? All it does in the end is have your remake do catchup to the better version.

@@mr.shplorb662 This. The Metroid Prime remaster genuinely looks fantastic (looks considerably better than the original) and runs at a consistent 60 fps. And i played it on a Switch Lite and there were no performance issues. The Switch can easily run Gamecube games with updated graphics and resolution, it's just Gamefreak is either given no time or budget (or neither) to properly delevoped their games. And when it comes to the wrong argument that the Switch is underpowered, it can run Xenoblade Chronicles 3 really well and that game looks miles better than any pokemon game and runs better than all of them as well.

The clothing part frustrates me so much. Like They have legend of zelda with totk and botw with clothes. Xy and sun and moon and sw. All clothing SPLATOON HAS CLOTHING. Mario had outfits in oddysey. .... and then pokemon. Of all things. Removes a big chunk of it.

14:52 funny thing about this exploit. I have done it, and probably the most insane thing you can do with it is get 7/8 of the requirements for one of the optional legendaries, Chien Pao, completed, WITHOUT the Raidon. You actually have to do it a SECOND time because one of them is somewhere across a river. I would have gotten all 8, but the last one is up a cliff which normally requires Koraidon/Miraidon to climb with the Climbing Ability and I couldn’t find any way around, but due to a exploit related to their physics (named a BLJ, same as Mario 64), you can basically climb any surface they can get any sort of foothold on. I tried to do the battle teleport, but it’s finicky, and the height of the cliff prevented it from working.

The selfie cam captures the camera UI??? I can understand most of the Gamefreak Magic. It's not good. The games shouldn't see the light of day in their condition. But I understand how we got here. But this one broke me. This is I N S A N E. How does this happen? Is the spaghetti code so jank that removing the broken feature would collapse the whole house of cards? Hell that doesn't make sense, they could just bury the code, maybe patch it in the DLC if you want ROI. The *key mapping* would have to be the load bearing jank! This is a cognitive hazard. This is a madness rune made of knowledge.

It's probably a mix of lazy coding and a lack of testing. I'm sure they just wrote a line to have the camera take a screenshot regardless of what was on it. Even it could be fixed with a single line of code that hides the GUI for a single frame. Would be far from the only thing in this game that could be fixed with very few lines of code.

The TM crafting system can actually really suck if you need specific materials from a pokemon that's hard to find. I have no idea why barboach and wiscash are so rare. Hell, instead of every evolution line having its own materials, why not just have more generic ones, like dragon scales can drop from dragon types/the dragon egg group, feathers can drop from bird pokemon, etc.

I do often defend this game a little, much in the same vein as one might defend Sonic 06 for missed potential but dammit I will not forgive them getting rid nearly every interior you'd typically find in these games. Anytime I play a Pokémon game, I love exploring any building I find and talking to every NPC even if they don't give me an item. When I first played I had a mini rant just as Rob did when the camera zoomed into the door frame and nothing happened. There are so many unique environments in this game that have unique homes and I really wish I could've explored them and learned more about the cultures that inspired them! D:

@@PlatinumAltaria That's not really what I was trying to say, I was referring to how I defend S/V in much the same way as 06 is often defended, missed potential because it needed more time. Neither game would've been perfect but people wouldn't have been put off experiencing the games because of the performance issues/common glitches and bugs. I genuinely enjoyed my time with S/V despite the obvious problems and I want to stress that I don't excuse those problems at all, it just becomes normal when you play it enough. The real discussion should of course be with how Game Freak and TPC handle things.

You mentioned not really understanding why people avoid trainers in a Pokémon game, so I’ll explain why I do that. For me, in the older games it was like a skill and puzzle solving feeling. Having to time when you run past them so that they are facing away from you, or find a route that avoids battle felt good

I found that glitch randomly on my first day playing before I got sick of the empty landscape. Once I realized I could essentially traverse the entire world map before ever entering the starting city, it was my goal to rock up to Nemona with a team of level 50s. It was not worth it at all, when all you can do is walk, it was so terribly slow. Good thing you didn't do that to yourself.

One time I did manage to clip through one of the buildings slightly, and it gave me long enough to have a peek inside one of the shops in Mesagoza. It just looked like an unrenovated and unfurnished room. That or just a big empty space with 4 walls. One of my biggest grievances outside the lag.

I love how just *close enough* a lot of things are. If the crafting system was used to permanently unlock an infinite use TM, it would be dope. But it isn't. At least we can be sure that whatever quality of life this game has will surely be present in the next installment. The open aesthetic of the Pokémon Center is really unique and fits the motorcycle thing they have going on... But the implication now is that all the medical care you get is gas station bandaids. They realized their game was slow, and so to speed it up they decided that you can auto-battle and just not trigger trainer encounters, which means that the solution to streamline the game is play less of the game. Truly brilliant. Who needs double, triple, horde and SOS battles to be normalized? Not this game. They realized everyone just loves crafting, so they spent an ungodly amount of time and resources everything else needed to make a picnic simulator that looks and works like crap, instead of making anything worthwhile of the actual pokemon bits and pieces crafting, and you know, actually giving a reason for this game to have as many restaurants as it has that would just let you eat a meal for a price, and give them an actual sandwich builder menu, like a Subway or something. Ace Pokémon distribution is also horrible. It's like they made all the right Pokémon but refused to give them to the trainers that should use them or give them the BST for that anyway. Brassius and Brambleghast? Kofu and Dodonzo? Mela and Scovillain? Atticus and Grafaiai? Giacomo and Lokix? Arven and Ciclizar, you know the guy that is the son of Future and Past couple with Future and Past Lizards, maybe he should have Present Day Lizard? No? Ok. They just left the England region, the birthplace of modern dog breeding, and just *now* they decided to do the 3 dogs based on a brittish rhyme. That's cool too I guess. But at least your uniform is very spanish and not at all the same as that of a japanese elementary school, hahaha.
