I associated that with being a novice in crime and it turned out the whole line was about mafia. Then Rookie saved me in the Elite Four and even though he's no longer a beginner, "Rookie" has grown on me like such a lovely ironic name for a veteran.

I had only just started playing Scarlet about a week prior when my dog of 16 years fell from the couch we were napping on, dislocated his hip, and lost mobility in his hind legs. He was very healthy for his age, only half-blind, but after two days spent taking him to different pet hospitals in a makeshift stretcher we had to accept that there wasn't anything we could do for him. Even though he was content to just lay next to us during that time, we knew we wouldn't be able to give him the constant care he now needed and laid him to rest. I've never been able to shake the feeling of responsibility; if I'd just been a little more attentive, I could've prevented the accident. He was such a loving friend, and constantly attached to my mother or me. We were his entire world, and he was ours, but in the blink of an eye, I lost my life-long companion and best, best friend. My mom and I were his world, and he was ours. I failed him as a caretaker and it cost him his life. Hate is a strong word, but I certainly didn't like Arven's character when I first saw him. I liked his cute queer-coded design, but I never really cared for the "annoying rival" trope and immediately dismissed him. That post-titan scene when his backstory was first revealed made me cry, but I still decided to watch the rest of scenes. The repeated, crushing reminders of heartache, guilt, and overwhelming despair; the explosive, then abating anger at having your world taken from you, over and over and over again... from a *Pokemon game*. I was bawling by the resolution. Though I did cry at N's farewell, no other Pokemon game has ever been able to elicit the same kind of emotions as this one has. Despite its obvious flaws, sv have become my favorite installments in the franchise to date (I had a hard time dethroning bw until the blueberry academy dlc gave us glorious unova music), and to me, this song will always be a reminder of why.

As someone with a dog who is slowly getting slower and weaker as her age is catching up to her, I related to Arven pretty quickly. I got teary eyed when I saw Mabosstiff regain his strength and pick up his pokeball. I didn't think mainline Pokémon could get me this emotionally invested, but here we are. Edit: June 24, 2023. She's gone now. I hope she knows I would have gone through a journey for Herba Mystica for her if I could.

After losing my dog earlier this year, I was not ready for what Arven's story had instore for me. I was in tears because everything he was said and did mirrored exactly what I was doing with my dog until she passed away. I was planning on finishing Path of Legends last, but after the second Titan, I gunned it to the end because I needed to know if Mabosstiff was going to be ok. Arven had it rough, but I was happy that he was able to save his friend.

Exact same thing here. My childhood dog passed away this past July and I could relate with Arven. I cried after learning why Arven was going after the Herba Mysticas. My dog couldn’t move in any way like Mabosstiff, but I’m just glad Mabosstiff got healthy in the end, it’s what I would’ve wanted with my dog. Sorry for your loss 🙂 I didn’t expect to like Arven at all, I thought he’d be my least favorite rival… but I love him and his story!

@Voltify even before his parents abandoned him they barely even looked at him, there's a book where he's even referred to as "the boy" showing how little they cared for him. The professors were psychopaths that put their goal of breaking the timeline above all else. Even the ai modeled after every aspect themselves showed more humanity, as even a robot with 0 feelings could see the dangerous and inhumane acts the real professor's were committing, and the ai ultimately tried to put a stop to it.

Outta all the characters in this gen. Arven is the one who managed to make me care. I really felt his sadness and frustration wanting to help his Mabosstiff. When he told the player his story. I immediately said "Screw the gyms! Screw team star! I don't even care what the professor wants! The only thing I want is to collect these herbs so Arven and Mabosstiff can be happy." I think for me, that was my treasure.

@@tear959 the reason I like Wally is because he started off as a Sick shy kid that you help catch his first Pokémon because he is afraid from moving away to a place with better air to help with his health condition by himself. But as the story goes on he begins to follow in your footsteps, and goes on his own adventure around the region to earn all 8 gym badges to challenge the league and become the champion. At the end of Victory road, Wally waits for you and challenges you to a battle to show you that thanks to you he has finally been able to chase a dream of his own and that he is no longer the scared boy from before. You obviously beat him, but his growth from a sick nobody, to someone with one of the coolest ost and motivations makes him a amazing rival and friend

Arven truly experienced the worst in this game. From his arc of trying to save/keep his Mabostiff healthy to everything we eventually figure out by the end of the game... this character really went THROUGH it and back. Arven is an outstanding character/rival/friend with a ton of depth and development throughout the game. His arcs nearly brought me to tears the most out of them all... And just like Nemona and Penny, I could not get his battle theme out of my head! This game really has some of the best/most indepth characters in any Pokemon game.

the little detail that i like the most is that arven and penny constantly fight in the dialogue when entering the area zero, but in the end penny is the one that goes and talks to arven after his parent's clone dies, showing at least some kind of small character development (something that pokemon games lack a lot of)

Personally, I’d choose Arven as my favorite character. I didn’t like Nemona as much, mainly because she didn’t have much going on. However she’s alright. Penny is good, I liked her personality and she’s the most mature out of all the characters. However, Arven is the best by a long shot. He has a lot of development, and I think Game Freak intended to make him a fan favorite because damn, he has a lot of screentime.

Arven skyrocketed as one of my favorite characters/rivals in this franchise. This is the first time in 9 gens that I didn't want to steamroll my rival. That final battle felt like a battle between 2 buddies and I loved every second of it. I spent most of it clicking irrelevant moves just to listen to the music and let him knock a few Pokemon out. Arven's 2nd fight was one of my favorite fights in the Pokèmon series. Each Pokèmon being one you've already fought alongside, and the fact I actually had to go get stronger before fighting him was awesome. This fight was amazing

This fight was way more hype than the Nemona battle. Arven was actually with you every step of his journey instead of popping in and out, he fought alongside you against the titans and this was such a cathartic way for him to get out of his funk and prove that he's worthy of standing on his own. I think this is the first time I was actually proud of my rival instead of just being annoyed at their presence.

This story absolutely broke my heart, and I loved it so much. Having a pet in such terrible health condition is something unfortunately close, so some of Arvens dialogue was heart wrenching. ‘Small bites’ is something I said almost exactly when my dog would eat in her last months, so that line particularly got to me. I’m so glad Arvens story had a happy ending, even though my boy still needs intensive therapy after that climax.

My dog went through the same as Arven's Mabostiff. He was diagnosed with heartworm failure, and he was given 2 weeks for the medication he was prescribed to take effect. I think it was his sheer love for us that he managed to make it through because had that medicine not worked, we would have had to put him down. He has to take his medicine for life, but he has so much energy on him, despite him being over 10 years old. It's as if he's a pup again

I really think it's gonna be hard for another rival to top Arven when it comes to his uniqueness and how well he's written. I don't think there's been a single character in a Pokémon game that I've ugly cried over so much, and grown attached to like Arven. His reasoning for getting the Herba Mystica is so selfless and pure, he loves every single one of his Pokémon he met along the way, and he had such a horrible childhood. I'm seriously so miffed there wasn't an option, or at least a damn cutscene that showed your character giving Arven a big, long hug. Because he's one of those characters that desperately needs one. I adore him with all my heart, what an amazing character.

Poor Arven went through so much, from watching his best friend slowly wither away, never having a true other friend, and finding out the parent he almost never seen had died, he went through so much. I’m happy Mabosstiff came back, cause that was pretty much all Arven had. I absolutely loved the game’s story, but I was not expecting it to get so serious with some parts. From extreme bullying, to someone who lost nearly everything, it was surprising dark. But finding out the professor was dead was honestly something that made me recoil when I heard it. Again, these games were really good and I did like those part, just not something I expected lol

It was so fulfilling seeing his Mabosstiff come out to battle you after spending the entire Titans arc essentially crippled and near-lifeless. Never was my heart made all fuzzy by a freaking Slasher Smile. And then I proceeded to down that goodest of bois in one hit from my Pawmot's Close Combat.

So I got through all 5 titan challenges and professor Turo called us to Area Zero. Arven wanted to battle with me to make sure he is ready to face the dangers of Area Zero, at which point he whipped out his team, who is 10 levels higher than mine, and wiped my entire team before I could even damange his Scovillain. Scarlet and Violet is truly the dark souls of pokemon, I definitely do not have a skill issue, and this soundtrack bops.

When we all think Mabosstiff isn't gonna come back and he turns away broken... only to realize his boi is bringing him the ball like the old times, and this poor man is so happy and shocked to finally see the only family he really ever had coming back he can barely stay still and contain his tears. I won't consider him a rival, more like a supporting character. Take JoBros in JoJo: the JoJo initially fights them out of a misunderstaing and then they slowly open up and become part of the group and a best friend to the protagonist.

I remember my first time meeting Arven and I was like: "THIS guy is the most beloved character in the game?!" Well, things have changed pretty quickly. He quickly jumped from my favourite character of the game to my favourite character in all of Pokémon. I love just how… wholesome this theme feels. Same with Nemona’s theme, but it’s refreshing to have this in such an endgame battle, especially so close to the tonal shift that is Area Zero. Kinda similar with Hop’s champion cup theme, but that one also has an epic “this one’s for all the marbles” tone to it.

Just finished the main story and OH MY GOD I wanna give Arven a hug so badly 😭😭✨✨The fact that he's probably such a good cook because he didn't have parents there to cook for him, and him trying to cook up recipes for his Mabosstiff. He's been through a lot and the lengths he went to to help Mabosstiff get better because he was the only one that was there for him when his mom/dad should've been. But the way he was able to cope with it shows how strong of a person he is and I just loved seeing more to his character as the game progressed. Not to mention how he ended up befriending all the Pokémon he had initially just caught to help battle the Titan Pokémon. The ending made me cry. He (and Penny too) are really amazing characters.
