Pikachu and a bunch of Pokémon are set to hit the big screen in Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds, but it’s not the first time these pocket monsters hit the big screen.
Back in the 90’s at the height of the Pokémon craze, Pokémon: The First Movie was released and introduced the world to the raw power of Mewtwo. Rewatching the film raises a lot of questions. Like why is it so short? What’s up with the “no fighting” lesson the character learn? Why does it get erased from their memory? Why does Mewtwo even want an army? Why are Brock and Misty there?

Eh, there's a Pikachu Short that goes with practically every film in the franchise. And a bunch of footage that encompassed much of the prologue to the movie was actually cut from the Dub version so it was even shorter than it was originally in Japan.

That short was worth it though. The image of Pikachu and Raichu running head to head is forever burned into my memory. A competitive rivalry can push you to go beyond perceived limits.

I watched the movie when I was a kid and will never forgive them for making me cry because of Pikachu crying over dead Ash. Fun fact: There's actually a deleted scene where they explore Mewtwo's youth, through which his character would be more developed and the audience would learn why he wants to rule the world. actually to be specific, meowth used up 2-3 slots to learn to talk. this was why he couldn't learn pay day and had fewer moves since the pokemon show follows the moves limitation(most of the time anyway).

@Snoi Med yes, at least after the orange islands they follow it. ever notice how some of ash's pokemon never used some of their old moves they used before? such as torkoal never using overheat during his fight against registeel after he got the heatwave move. there's some exceptions and broken ones though like ash's snorlax who has used 6 moves during one battle but otherwise they stick to that rule.

Say what you want man, but honesty, my all-time favorite movie since my childhood. Legendary soundtracks, The Cast, the storyline, and the characters. Till this day, this movie and soundtrack brings me joy and a bit of tears to my eyes, espically certain scenes If you asked me to describe this movie, I couldn't fit it all in this box. Pure legend of a film. Glad to have it on cassette.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the fact that part of the movie was cut for being too dark and depression for kids. In the Japanese cut the scientist that lead the cloning project wanted to bring back his deceased daughter and accepted Giovanni's deal. He would fund his work and use it to bring back his child and in turn he would create the most powerful Pokemon ever. What followed was an infant Mewtwo having dreams in which he interacted with other clones, the three starter Kanto Pokemon and the scientists child clone. They become friends but someone goes wrong and the starter trio and the girl die, leaving Mewtwo alone and deveasted which causes his psychic powers to go nuts which forces the scientists to use drugs to suppress his emotions to keep his powers under control. They kept doing this and contributed to Mewtwo later extremely violent behavior later on. I gotta be honest when I saw the title I was hoping you would talk about the Pikachu short, do the whole its all nice and family fun to the start of the movie being life is wonderful and full of mystery before going all sad and dark. Don't know why but I like it when you do that.

I recommend watching the Japanese version with English subtitles of Mewtwo's backstory because the dubbed one is an unfinished product.

That's actually part of the Mewtwo Returns movie (which is *technically* a TV special but it was treated as a full movie in quite a few countries). Google says it went straight to video in the US and UK so I guess not many people are familiar with it? It was in normal cinemas where I grew up. The movie starts with the Amber Project you were describing and then tells the story of what happened to Mewtwo after the events of the first movie.

Funny thing, i vaguely remember watching this, and at the end MewTwo says something like "it is not the circumstances of one's birth, but what one does with one's life that truly defines them". What's interesting is how this premise, which would have been unthinkable 200 or even 100 years ago is now so widely accepted that it can be used as the moral of a work so low on the scale of cultural significance.

The Giovanni part in the beginning isn't just the same thing again, it does have a purpose: After hating humans because they wanted to control hin, Mewtu has a little hope when meeting Giovanni. Maybe there are some good humans? But he is betrayed again, which makes his hate more understandable.
